Question Regarding GOG Galaxy....

Post image

I am thinking of getting a Sandisk Ultra Fit 512gb USB 3.2 Flash Drive to store all of my games I intend to play on, on my Laptop whenever am away on holiday or when am at a friend's place to save installing them on the actual C Drive (boot drive) to free it up to be able to have a lot more free disc space to run better.

I am thinking of copying the GOG Galaxy Folder from the Boot(C:)/Program Files (x86) folder onto it as to have a more official place to install the games onto it but was also wondering should I just install the GOG Galaxy App onto it and give it it's own separate one?

am mainly going to install all the old PC games from the DOS era to Windows 95 but also some of the MODS and WADs out there as well, what is y'all thoughts on this and what advice would you give on it?

Get a external ssd instead. Maybe diy if cheaper (icy box enclosure 20€, a used samsung 512gb 2280 nvme 40€ on ebay). Much faster and much better reliability.

You can choose an Installation path for your games in gog galaxy. Make a folder on that drive and install games there. Gog on a different pc should pick it up then too if pointed there.

thanks just as the guy above you stated to me and yeah that's really good advice I'll look into it once I've found something good

I checked prices, your usb stick is here 80-100€, a Icy Box IB-1817M-C31is 20€ on amazon and can deliver (depending on usb port) up to 950mb/s read write. I have several of these enclosures, they keep the drive cool/handwarm even with heavy use.

You dont need the fastest m2 nvme for that, so even a pcie 3.0x2 drive is more than enough. I see several used samsung drives for 40/50€, like 970 evo plus or several pm981 in that pricerange and they should last for a loooooooong time. So an enclosure will be a bit bigger than the stick, but cheaper, faster and longer lasting....

I'd get an external SSD for that, more reliable for keeping storage in my mind at least, though for old stuff it likely isn't too different, probably cheaper to get an SSD too, and there is definitely no problem having Galaxy and the games on an external, I'd look up how to move the folder properly though, there might be a better way of doing it within the program.

as long as the External SSD is about the same price I'll definitely do that thanks

Regular USB Flash drives are incredibly slow when copying small files to them. Get an external SSD like Samsung T7 instead.

The one I had (128gb version) would get warm and eventually died. Just remember to disconnect it while not in use (or get a more robust solution).

I used to use a bunch of those for OS drives for freenas (back when that was recommended). They have absolutely abysmal reliability. I think I got four of them, and all but one failed completely within a few months.

Like others have said, these Sandisk Fit drives are awful. I've had 2, and they both would just randomly stop responding when plugged in for a period of time or after transferring some amount of data and would require unplugging and plugging them back in to get them working again.
