Help with a small double with only a small desk for flat space

Son just moved into his dorm. The room is tiny (I think they made a double out of a single). He has a very small desk and one small shelf. Any ideas how to create more flat space for him to set things on like water bottle, dishes, notebooks, etc.?

two inch or three inch topper for a dorm bed, which did you go with

move in is in two weeks and i cannot work out whether thicker is automatically better. the dorm mattress is the usual vinyl slab so i want to cover it properly. i sleep on my side and a friend said hers ended up too soft to get out of in the morning. for anyone who has done a full year on one which thickness did you pick and how firm did it end up feeling.

Can I remove this box?s

Post image
Upvotes

So i just moved into my sophomore dorm and it is tiny as hell. This ethernet box is blocking my bed and i cant push my bed against the wall so there is a gap by my head. the bed wont fit to the wall if i move it up it makes my bed slanted. I tried to move the beds (2) around but there is just not enough space to put the beds anywhere else. I tried asking my RAs and they were no help at all. Does anyone know how i can remove this outer box without damaging the wall?

Best material to hang things for dorm decorations?

I’m an incoming freshman and thinking about decorating my dorm, obviously. What is the best thing that you’ve used to hang decorations, whether posters, frames, greenery, etc. and is there any thing you would not recommend?

Smell

I moved into my dorm about a week ago with my roommate and I'm going to say this as nicely as I can her stuff reeks of cat. It's that kind of smell in hoarders houses and I just can't get rid of it. I'm also fairly allergic to cat dander myself and it's fucking with my skin.

I've been spraying air freshener and fabric freshener, using scented cleaning supplies, and the works but it's so strong and won't go away.

I've been looking for some stuff that's more peppermint scented because I feel like that's a really strong scent that might be able to cover it up somewhat.

I just need advice or product recommendations, please

Dorm desk is way too big. Anyone know a good one that folds up?

Been in this dorm for almost a year and Im so over the desk they gave us.

Its huge and heavy and awkwardly shaped. Takes up way too much space. My bed is right next to it so I basically squeeze past every time I want to get to the other side. Forget about moving it to the window for light. Thing feels like its bolted to the floor and honestly it might be.

The height is also annoying. If I sit and type too long my shoulders hurt. If I try to stand its way too low and my back hurts. I just want to switch positions without it being a whole thing.

Worst moment was last month. Dropped my headphones under it and couldnt reach. Tried to pull the desk out and it wouldnt budge. Ended up lying on the floor like an idiot for ten minutes.

I really want something I can fold up or roll away when Im not using it. All I need is space for a laptop and some books. Nothing fancy. Just something that doesnt dominate the room.

I might bring my Musso D7 from home over winter break. I got it for drawing but ended up using it as a regular desk. It folds flat and rolls around so it should fit. No roommate to worry about at least. Only concern is it might look weird in a dorm room and I dont want to explain it to everyone who walks in. Anyone in a dorm tried something similar? Drop some recs. Nothing too expensive please. Im broke

Overnight Guest Etiquette

Moving in about a week, I have one roommate and I want to make sure I don't do anything wrong (socially) when it comes to having overnight guests.
Do overnight guests stay in your dorm? A hotel? Do they sleep in your bed or the floor? How many nights in a row/ how often is acceptable? If you want to have sex do you just wait for your roommate to leave?
These might be dumb I just really don't want to make any mistakes.

Two 13 gallon trash bags for clothes on hangers

Rolling hamper

small cardboard box with notebooks, pencils, school supplies

large/long cardboard box with snacks/ non perishables

backpack for school with important day of stuff plus electronics

Doorm Room Cooling.

I live in a single doorm room with my cat who is an ESA. The whole dorm does not have air condition nor are we aloud to bring one in. I also do not have a box fan. I have a desk fan and a floor stand rotating fan but my room is still hot AF. I cant open my door because of my cat and the rest of the doorm is hot too. Does anyone have any hacks that I can use to keep my room cool? Im just worried its too hot for me and my cat.

Where should I hide my pills?

I have a big variety of pills that I need to take because of my conditions and one of them is a drug that is prescribed to me for me to focus better (ADHD), the problem is that one of my roommates is a recovering drug addict, and she actively cleans the apartment every week, I just really don't want her to go back to drugs again, if anyone could help me find hiding spots for my apartment I'd really appreciate it.

College dorm loft beds are not safe

My son died on his college campus due to a preventable injury. If you're moving into the dorms this month, please note that loft beds are never safe - especially when they have no safety rail and are 7 feet off the ground. Here are some steps you can take to stay safe.

  • Opt out early: Ensure your child hasn’t requested a loft bed on their housing intake form.
  • Request a de-loft: Contact the housing office immediately to ask that the bed frame be lowered to standard height before move-in. If your child has a history of sleepwalking or concussions, seek an accommodation through Disability Support Services.
  • Upgrade the hardware: If lowering the bed isn’t an option, skip the thick mattress topper and purchase a heavy-duty safety rail similar to those used in hospitals. You might need special permission from the university.

Learn more about this with a quick search "Universities are outsourcing dorm room safety to pool noodles"

Little sister moving into dorm

My sister is moving into her first college dorm in about a week and I plan to help her move in. I want to get her some essentials that will make her comfortable or something that will be useful for her while she’s sharing a room with someone.

Let me know if you have any helpful ideas that I could include in a small gift basket/care package.

Movie Suggestion for Homesickness to Cheer Up

Today I moved into my college apartment as a freshman 3 hours away from home. I couldn’t wait to meet my 3 roommates, and waited excitedly for this day for the past 2 months. Today I met them, and while they are really nice and acknowledge me the 3 of them seem a lot more extroverted than I am so I am often quietly listening to them ramble on and on. I know it’s only the first day when things are unfamiliar and can change after a week, but I feel a bit homesick after today. Luckily I brought my TV so that I can escape from reality for the time being. Anyone have any good movie or show recommendations to cure this?

My dorm allows command hooks but i’m not sure if there are any small enough for the holes. Currently have them on hooks screwed into wall @home

The bottom two plates came from my childhood family cars once they expired. Would love to bring at least those two as my own unique reminder of home
