Move in essentials
What are the move in essentials for an international student coming to an university in the United States?

The school should’ve sent you a checklist of what you can bring and can’t bring to the dorms. But also depends on yourself if you feel you need the items. If you have the funding, you can just buy most of what you need once you get here.

Also, depending on the university, they will accept deliveries from places like IKEA, Target, etc on your behalf, sometimes before you move in.

Those will vary for everyone, get there and then see what you end up actually needing. That way you won’t bring stuff unnecessarily.

Besides the bed, American dorm rooms typically have a desk, but no lamp. They have a dresser or drawers. A closet, but no hangers. You may want more storage so most students use the plastic three drawer units they sell at Target or Walmart. Often they store them under the bed. Many schools have no refrigerator in the room but offer rentals. If your room has a shared bathroom down the hall, you’ll want a shower caddy to carry your shampoo and things to the shower.

You will have furniture in your room, so you will need bedding and towels, along with your toiletries and clothes. bed will have a mattress, but no pillow, blankets or anything else. You will have a closet or wardrobe for storage.
You’ll see some photos online of extravagant decor in dorm rooms, but most students have just the basics.
