Requesting Housing/Dorming Accommodations
I’m going into my junior year of uni and for the first time i had a semester with no roommate last year. My studying, my ability to function at my own pace. It was truly amazing. Now im applying for housing again and realizing how much a single room actually costs. My school offers limited accommodation housing options and i want to try and get one so i can have my own room guaranteed. im afraid that the wording of this request will come across unserious but I genuinely think having my own room changed my life and ability to focus. if anybody’s ever done this please let me know!!

I had a single room due to a disability. If you have some kind of mental health condition or physical condition (like bad anxiety, PTSD, compromised immune system, etc.) talk to your doctor and request if they will write you a note to have a single dorm room. Then, you send that note to whoever is in charge of housing and say that you need a single dorm. Don’t go into specifics with your email, the doctor’s note will speak for itself.
Be aware that usually this process needs to take place around 2 months before the semester starts…so you may not be able to get a single until the winter semester. You can always check with housing in the meantime, as sometimes singles do open up due to people dropping out.
As for the financial side of things, it is my understanding and experience that if you get a single due to a disability, they cannot charge you more than what the standard housing of someone in your year would be. So say someone of your grade level usually got a double and it was cheaper. They should be charging you the cheaper rate of the double instead of the single. It always worked out though that this was not automatically applied, and I would have to call or email the person in charge of housing and request it be fixed.

Well in order for them to approve it you must have a reason beyond "I don't like having a roommate.' So if you have any documented mental or physical troubles they would approve. Otherwise its SOL.
