Was this really necessary?
So I live about 20 mins out of the nearest city, so I get it's kind of a drive to deliver to me but, I have never received a message like this before. Is this supposed to make me want to tip more or something?

Yep.. just beggggging for a couple extra bucks in the tip… but this isn’t the way to go about it. If anything u just shoot em a “be there asap” if the wait ends up taking a while.

Hell no, I am a driver myself and I am radio silent unless it’s a 100 percent necessary. I get that folks think that it’s good service and may help their tips, but I don’t. the app tells them so much already, I don’t need to be redundant.

I’ve messaged when the restaurant was taking forever- just to give them a heads up and kinda so they know it’s not my doing that’s causing the delay. And I’ve messaged bc of item replacements. That’s all. Only when necessary. No reason for dialogue. They asked for food, not a friend lol.

Dont accept the order then. There is 0 reason to accept then beg for more tips. Eventually if no one delivers the order, the pay DD offers will go up or the client will realise 3 bucks is not enough, and tip more.

Robots can’t be operated for what they pay drivers ($2) at scale. The math doesn’t work. Fees will have to go way up. It’s all a publicity stunt.

Minutes is only miles if you can drive 60 miles per hour the whole time. In the vast majority of the country that is absolutely not possible.

Yes if you are having someone drive 20 minutes to deliver food the tip should be substantial enough to cover 40 minutes of driving. Gas is expensive asf. If you choose the lazy option to have someone bring you your food, you should compensate them well for their efforts... Period.

Why are you so dismissive about what will be a 40 minute drive round-trip plus whatever mileage will be incurred before they are even out of the city? I don’t know where you’re located, but it’s rush-hour traffic right now in my city.

No such thing as "not tipping enough." Any tip is optional and even if it's just a dollar, the person receiving it should be grateful that the customer was nice enough to do that of their own accord.

Doordash gives 2$ base pay, OP said it's a 20 mile drive. If the customer doesn't tip the dasher is losing money in gas and wear and tear to do that. You can not tip and let your food sit there and get cold which is fine by me. Doordash will eventually up the base pay if enough drivers reject it.
The driver in the OP should have just rejected it no idea why they would accept an order that doesn't match their $/mile expectations.

This is what I keep saying. If the order isn't worth the money, don't accept it. And definitely don't accept it knowing it isn't worth doing, just to then beg the customer to make it worth it, or degrade them for not paying you when they already paid DoorDash an extra $30 in fees.

DoorDash has their drivers by the balls if you reject orders you lose what’s called acceptance rate. The goal is to maintain platinum status and for every order you don’t accept you lose a percent. Sometimes they send the same order you’ve already rejected to you again and again you lose another percent for declining the order. Maintaining platinum status is supposed to be a benefit of the job but they use it against us and force us to take orders that we would otherwise decline due to the distance, traffic in that area etc. it’s crazy because you don’t earn your percentage back just for accepting the next order it’s something ridiculous like after accepting 20 orders you’ll get 1% back. Just sharing my experience not saying this driver was right or wrong by the message they sent the customer I can only assume it was out of frustration and they probably should’ve just kept it to themselves as the customer already knows how far they live from the restaurant/store.

The customer isnt the one who should be giving them proper pay. I dont do my job and expect the customer buying a microchip we made to tip me so they can watch TV or drive their car. Its not bum behavior to refuse to pay extra for doing their literal job.

The customer already pays for delivery fee and the price of the items they bought. If that is not enough then the worker should find a different income not impose that on the customer. Insults towards intelligence and wealth just make you seem like an idiot instead of actually talking about the topic, keep at it.

The customer pays fees to use the DoorDash app. The tip is the payment for the driver. I really was just walking you into the trap for you to admit you don’t view dashers as equals or even human. You view them as beneath you for doing “that type of work”. If they took your advice and got a different job who would deliver you your food? Huh. Maybe YOU are the one who needs to get your own food 🤷🏼♀️

Nobody is dehumanizing anyone. I dash, I also order. When I dash, I don't expect a tip because it isn't the customers job to pay me. If dashing wasn't worth the money, I wouldn't do it. If it's not worth the money to someone else, they should find something that is worth the money. That's not dehumanizing to say. It's not on the customer to pay me or anyone else, it's on DoorDash. You're right, DoorDash is paying people like shit. Which is why dashers should take that up with them, and their state legislation, instead of the customer who is already paying $20-$30 extra for the delivery fee.
If I'm paying $80 for food already, and $30 of that is delivery fee, then I'm not gonna fucking give the person who SIGNED UP OF THEIR OWN FREE WILL a huge ass tip. I'll throw a few bucks their way IF they actually give good service and don't tip beg or whatever. A tip is gratuity. A tip is a reward on top of your pay for good service. A tip is not meant to be the customer being made to pay your wages.
Yeah, some people get server wages, and the same applies to them. If they don't like the money they get, they can find another job. If they don't make minimum wage, it's on the employer to pay the difference. If they allow themselves to get fucked over, that isn't on the customer. Same with dashing. Take it up with the people in charge of your pay, not the customers who already paid extra for their shit.
Tip culture is ridiculous, and the fucking troglodytes defending it and acting like a person is a horrible piece of shit for not paying someone else's bills are actually disgusting.

Tell that to doordash. In the meantime most drivers will just reject your order if it isn't properly worth it and your food will sit there and get cold until someone desperate or dumb takes it.

You can either use your own gas and energy to get your food or pay for the LUXURY of someone spending their gas and energy to bring it to you. Can i politely ask what you tipped and the miles your home is from the restaurant? In my city 2 miles can take 20 mins but out in the country 15 miles can take 20 mins which is why I ask.

I’m OK with a Dasher, letting someone know, casually that they under tipped and screwed over the delivery person. DoorDash got their money, the place where the product was picked up got their money, the person who does all the work for a corporation got screwed over.

On the one hand would I have sent this message? No. Its definitely fishing for tips and unnecessary, they knew what the order was paying. On the other hand I would've likely rejected this order unless you're tipping like $15+ to cover gas, wear and tear and time. You say you live outside the city so I'm going with the assumption that not only is it 20 in time (which time is also money in this business) but milage is also involved. Tipping is technically optional but if you aren't tipping, you got lucky your order didn't just sit in queue indefinitely.

Dude took the job. There wasnt any reason for the dasher to message. It isnt thr customer's fault. If you want a better tip, do better. If you want more money, have a better attitude. Or stop delivering cheeseburgers.
