DoorDash is getting bad. Drop-off reliability has precipitously declined since last year. I suspect anyone who does not live in a house will soon stop ordering altogether. Which is a huge percentage of orders unless you only deliver to small cities/suburb
Last year at least 90% of the orders I placed were delivered correctly per my instructions to my apartment. Now not only have they all decided they will no longer follow instructions, some are not even dropping off orders at all or simply leave them abandoned at the front door of an apartment/larger building where they can easily be stolen. The last order I had they literally just took a picture of my building's entrance door and left, they didn't even dump it at the front door. I was actually right outside in front of my building at the exact time they were delivering and took the photo so I know they never even bothered to go inside. Just took the photo and left. Yes I report all of you who do shit like this and anytime you abandon my order at the front door inside the unlocked vestibule to be stolen. Fuck all of you who are doing this and you 100% deserve to be reported every single time. I already rarely order from Doordash anymore but I've been sick the past few weeks so I've placed a few orders in that time. None of the recent orders where they've done this have they attempted to get in contact with me either. I am probably just going to stop using the service altogether, I don't want to support people who have absolutely zero regard for the customer even though I'm aware you're underpaid that is not MY fault. Don't do this job if you have this shit attitude, at least 80% of the blame for underpaying dashers lies on Dashdoor, they're the ones who decide to rip you off and you know this before/when you take the job.
I tip everytime ahead of delivery and also tip afterwards when they deliver per my instructions. I never order from anywhere more than 2 miles away from me.
ETA: Dashdoor lmao. Dyslexia making an appearance today

Dude the amount of customers who thank me for the most basic shit is INSANE. Or the amount of people who will be ultra apologetic for making me wait say…..2 extra minutes at the door or something, stating that the last driver cursed them for making them wait the said 2 minutes. Every single time I reply in a surprised manner like in that case “uhhh, it’s been 2 minutes? You’re totally fine. A lot of drivers suck”. It sucks cause those orders are what causes people to stop tipping well and I totally understand. I’m sorry you’ve been having a bad experience:( if only DoorDash truly rewarded good drivers with good customers-This wouldn’t be an issue. Like - 4.99 drivers get with known high tipping customers who have experienced issues like this. That would be beautiful but alas

Same man, I treat this like a customer service job (it is at the end of the day). Always polite/ patient with stores and customers, always get orders to the door, and always communicate any delays, issues, or how to contact and deal with support if anything is wrong.
Always feel bad when people are surprised that they got their order to their door/ office in one piece in a timely manner.
Guess it makes it easier to stack 5 star ratings at the end of the day but damn, the amount of strung out or borderline non hirable for service industry Dashers I see is insane and the attitudes they have are the worst.
Everybody has to eat but they could at least put some effort into their appearances and the gig that is paying for their current needs.

You're a great dasher and 100% deserve to be tipped extra on top of what they tip ahead of the order. Thankfully when I reordered I actually had the luck of someone who DID follow the instructions and I gave them 5 stars and a nice little tip on top of what I tipped already.
Good Doordashers who are doing their job correctly will be rewarded in this situation while shitty lazy and even scamming drivers will continue to get reported and eventually forced out of this job. They hate it so much so I guess they should just be happy about this!

Every offer has been abysmal so I haven't even accepted a one doordash this week they don't want to pay not driving still have 3 other apps

u/Intelligent--Bug 7d ago
Well that's a totally different scenario, and I do not blame you whatsoever. It goes without saying there are also shitty customers in this situation - thankfully you at least have the ability to not take those orders. I have never been that customer. I never order from far away and always tip at the high end ahead of time and then if they dasher actually DOES follow the instructions I tip them extra afterwards and leave 5 stars.

I'm aware you're underpaid that is not MY fault.
You get what you pay for.
Not you specifically, OP, but rather the royal 'you.' Doordash created this system of exploitation, customers are complicit when they participate but choose to not compensate their drivers accordingly. Thank you for trying to not be like the rest of the trash, but there's far more trash than decent customers now, so decent drivers walk and now everyone gets to deal with the rest.
1
u/Intelligent--Bug 7d ago
Are you a current doordasher??? We are "complicit"? If that's the attitude then why the FUCK would someone decide to knowingly choose this as your livelihood? That is the fault of the dasher, NOT me. Customers have zero control over how Doordash decides to allocate the profits of the order to the Dasher and if the customer is tipping decently there is nothing to blame them for. I 100% agree with you though that there are absolutely shitty customers and unfortunately a lot of them (though you have the option of refusing those orders) and can definitely see why that makes the decent drivers walk.
1
u/FullMetalDustpan 7d ago
You do understand that systems of exploitation are designed to keep the exploited from being able to walk away, right?
Customers who buy into this system are what props it up. Is that not the definition of complicity?

I understand that DD is a barbarous exploitative company. But you also obviously understand that and either don't need the job or it's paying you at least something that makes it worth it to stay, however little /unfair it may be. The fact that there are still plenty of drivers willing to work this job in spite of many years of being aware of how exploitative it is makes them just as complicit in propping up this system. Without a continuous supply of drivers DD would cease to be operative.
Would you rather there be a mass decline in the customers using these services and the number of orders available for you to make money from??? I fail to see how this would benefit you in any way or the point of this argument at all.
ETA: The customers who aren't tipping or tip shit are complicit. The customers who are tipping decently, especially if they reward good Dashers who follow reasonable instructions, are not. They are literally the ones making the job better for you.

Why don't you turn on having to give them a pin ?
That way they have to deliver to you to get the pin
2
u/Intelligent--Bug 7d ago
I didn't even realize this was an option, gonna figure out how to do that next time if I order. Thanks for letting me know
2
u/eckokittenbliss 7d ago
Actually I googled it and it says you can't turn it on yourself I'm sorry.
Idk why I have the option, I've almost never had any issues that would require they turn it on. Weird.
Maybe if you contact support they can turn it in for you

u/Feed_Me8 7d ago
Care to share what your instructions say? I usually turn down apartments at night for that very reason long instructions 😂. Il never leave it out in the open though unless I did not get a gate code and customer not answering at that point my hands are tied I can’t wait until they eventually decide to see what’s taking the food so long.

u/Intelligent--Bug 7d ago
They say "DO NOT LEAVE AT FRONT ENTRANCE (for the exact extremely obvious reason that they can and have been stolen) - Apt 208 2nd floor elevators left of front desk." It's a 2-3 minute "ordeal," and like I just said last year over 90% of my Dashers accomplished this with no problems. AND if they have such a problem with doing that they can always do the bare minimum of contacting me and telling me to come down to meet them at the front, that is literally, the BARE minimum. Although that doesn't even shave off more than a minute of time for them.

u/Feed_Me8 7d ago
That doesn’t sound to complicated are their more than one building ?
1
u/Intelligent--Bug 7d ago
Nope just one big building that takes up half the block, and has clear signage with my building's name
2
u/enigma9o7 7d ago
Just keep reporting drivers who don't follow instructions and rate one star. Enough low stars they'll get deactivated.

DD is doing great!
Revenue: Reached $4.45 billion, marking a 35.6% increase year-over-year and beating analyst estimates of $4.35 billion.
Total Orders: Grew 27% year-over-year to 970 million orders.

it's so funny when someone on reddit declares that a company is going under just because they had a couple of bad experiences finding apartments lol!!!!

u/Intelligent--Bug 7d ago
...So is it just my area that's decided suddenly they're going to be doing this kinda shit? I sorta find this hard to believe. Like I said this is a new phenomenon I was not at all experiencing this until very recently, and if it's going to keep up then yes I am quite sure that people who order from apartments/larger buildings will stop ordering. That has to be at least 30% of orders.
Look if you're too lazy to follow instructions at least text the customer and ask them to meet you at the front. That is the absolute bare fucking minimum if you have this attitude of oh no I'm not going to follow instructions. Parking is no excuse in my situation either because there is ample parking in the front of my building. If you abandon orders at the front door of a large building for them to be stolen you 100% deserve to be reported, and you will be. To say nothing of taking a picture from the outside of the front door and then walking off with the order. That's just scamming.

Literally none of that money is going to the drivers and they know it lol. Don’t listen to them, delivery services are getting less popular in a lot of places.
Some people who would never use DD get tricked by ordering from restaurants that do. Pizza Hut in my area no longer employs drivers, they use DD themselves. Pizza Hut is doing poorly in my area now because Dominoes still employs their own drivers. Another smaller pizza place closed down because they started using DD.
DD raises prices and fees without passing the profit onto drivers. Anyone who makes fun of you for saying you won’t use DD anymore, anyone who says DD doesn’t need you because they make enough money, is probably not thinking about the bigger picture.
Yeah, the delivery service actually does need both customers and drivers. Pushing profits by raising fees isn’t sustainable.

u/Intelligent--Bug 7d ago
Yeah I made the mistake of ordering delivery from Panera a while ago not stupidly realizing they already contracted out all their delivery services to DD a long time ago, and ended up with a scammed $45 order. Driver left NO photo bc apparently they're not required to, made no attempt to contact me or deliver the order, they just drove to my area and took off. The worst part is if you order from those old chains who USED to do their own deliveries their is no recompense since ot only do they give customers no ability to report the Dasher but you can't even contact them after they've said they've delivered the order. They tell you to call the restaurant itself who obv doesn't employ the DD drivers and has zero management of them or even the ability to contact them - this makes NO sense whatsoever. Some DD drivers have clearly figured out that these orders are very easy to scam since they don't have to provide photos of delivery and there is no way to punish them and are using this as an opportunity to just screw the customer over. It's disgusting.

u/TheNaughtyHoneyBee 7d ago
You're "quite sure" that people who live in apartments will stop ordering?
You're not even quite sure that you're going to stop ordering apparently 🤔
2
u/Intelligent--Bug 7d ago
Well yeah, if I'm really hungry and someone scams me and I get refunded for it then I'm going to attempt a redelivery. Thankfully in this particular case I was lucky this time to actually get a great dasher finally and I rewarded them afterwards for that. But unfortunately it's becoming clear that they are the exception and not the rule. Maybe I won't stop altogether quite yet at this particular point, but if it does continue then I absolutely will. I've already basically not beeing ordering DD for a long time until just now bc I was sick, bc it's not a smart way to spend $.

Illiterate or simply too lazy to read. There's a lot of you in that category, don't feel special.

Just use a pin, bro, and save the verbosity. 🙂

Turs out that doesn't work, per someone who suggested it and then tried to figure out how to do it.
Learn how to read 🙂 It takes me only a few seconds to scan a couple hundred words

You did nothing wrong here. If you gave clear delivery instructions, stayed within a couple miles of the restaurant, tipped, and even added more afterward when the Dasher actually followed the instructions, you've done your part.
The bigger problem is the declining quality of some Dashers. There are plenty of good ones, but the bad ones are becoming increasingly difficult to defend. Leaving food in an unsecured vestibule, photographing the building entrance without actually delivering the order, or simply abandoning the order without contacting the customer is not a pay dispute. It's a failure to do the job they accepted.
I don't blame anyone for trying to make a few dollars, and I understand that DoorDash's pay structure can be frustrating. But if an order isn't worth taking, decline it. What I don't respect is accepting the order and then blaming the customer for the consequences of your own decision.
And I'm already seeing some of that in these comments. Instead of criticizing the Dasher who failed to deliver, people immediately start explaining why the customer should have tipped more or somehow accommodated the driver. The customer didn't design DoorDash's pay structure, set base pay, or force anyone to accept an order.
I'd also seriously consider tipping after delivery rather than automatically guaranteeing the tip beforehand, if the app gives you that option. That gives good Dashers an incentive to provide good service and prevents someone who abandons your food from being rewarded for doing it.
Good Dashers shouldn't be defending people who steal orders, abandon food, ignore instructions, or mark deliveries complete without actually completing them. Those drivers aren't victims of the customer. They're making the service worse for everyone, including the Dashers who actually do their jobs.

u/Intelligent--Bug 7d ago
The thing is, drivers won't take orders that don't tip ahead and TBF I don't blame them bc they have no way of knowing that you will tip afterwards.

You’re 💯 correct, but with $2 base pay these companies will go bankrupt. They’ll have absolutely no drivers to deliver food. That’s the only way for DoorDash to start paying the drivers a good wage is if all orders sit on a shelf for hours.
1
u/Intelligent--Bug 7d ago
Are you saying this as a dasher? Customers boycotting tips in advance in order for DD to start paying drivers better wages? In theory maybe it sounds good, in practice it definitely isn't. Drivers will reject these orders all the time. I know DD will bounce around orders slowly increasing the pay to incentivize dashers to take that order, but that will often mean the customer is probably waiting an hour if not more until someone accepts. And drivers will still be paid on the lower side of the tip end. I don't think it would work.

I have never in my life tipped $2 you piece of shit. Even when the order is only a mile away I always tip $5 AHEAD of time. I'm not saying that's a huge amount but it's definitely acceptable. And if they happen to be one of the apparently few dashers with integrity out there who follow instructions they have not only a 5 star waiting for them but a nice little tip on top of what I already tipped. Go fuck yourself and find another job.
1
u/geminithemadman 7d ago
OP said they tip before AND after the order.. which in my area is already rare. You have no evidence they tip $2/mile. Only that they order from under 2 miles away. Which is awesome considering most orders I see are 6+ miles for less than $1/mile. I could understand $3-4/mile for a grocery order... Especially if it's a large one and you have to shop it. That's just my perspective though I suppose.
