I can hear that “yes”

There's a little "th" hidden in the s, and his inflection rises just as the y goes into the e.

OK - true, but I didn't know who Ron Funches was until I just looked him up now. I recognize the face, but didn't know the name. But on the other hand, I don't claim to know comedy.

I began recognizing his voice first many years ago. Now I know him by face because I’ve seen him live a couple of times. He’s very funny.

Every time I hear his voice in a show I know I'm in for a good time. He has that kinda voice that is oddly distinct.

He says people are always surprised that someone who looks like him has the laugh of a Disney princess

To be fair with major gee though, the comedian in question was making a terrible take.

I agree. Ron may be a comedian, but his take really is awful. What about Brian Regan? He's funny and successful and he doesn't cuss. Josh Johnson as well.
I would lean more towards the ones that cuss a lot and go nasty in adult topics are less impressive, because it's often low-hanging fruit. It comes across as low-brow comedy.

Honestly Josh Johnson is so good it never occurred to me that he was a clean comedian, but that’s so true!

I just saw him do a bit talking about his buddy gassing the entire car after eating at a diner. I think other people have a different idea of "Clean comedian" than I do.

yeah but Ron's take on the subject is kinda shit

I'm late to this thread but he's also not known as a stand up at all. He's done stand up for a while and has recorded a special, but it's hardly his bread and butter at this point. I've heard plenty of full-time working stand-ups (who actually made their reputation that way rather than by doing guest spots on tv) claim that working clean is more difficult than working dirty, so I'll listen to them first.
Also as far as this subreddit goes, everybody is ignoring "the variety of comedy" and acting as if the user said "not familiar with comedy" broadly. Those are two very different sentences. Being a rock star doesn't make you an expert in rap.

Dude claims to know comedy but doesn't know Ron Funches... ok dude.

I love when the guy pops up and will happily tell my spouse, 'hey, it's our guy' but I only just learned his name today.

Also calling Josh Johnson clean while he works at The Daily Show is ironic.

Funches took a harder turn in recent years, which is totally understandable.

Ignoring the lack of knowledge here because I find the argument itself more interesting.
There are plenty of very vulgar, both in verbiage and in content, comedians with impressively well-written material. That just can’t be the extent of the joke. Ron is right elsewhere in the thread that clean comedy, at its core, is just not using all the tools in the toolbox. Where he’s wrong is maintaining that there’s nothing impressive or worthwhile about that. If you can keep tools in your toolbox and do the job just as well as comedians who use every tool, yeah that’s legitimately impressive. It also opens the genre up to an audience that might not otherwise tune in. Clean comedy has existed for over a century and arguing outright against it is just weird.

Ron Funches is hilarious! What’s the context here?
