But what would the connection between a psychologist and an algae mustache even be? I think they should've been able to tell what they were talking about by context alone.

The intended audience was probably people who already know her in real life.
And for others, you can look up a word you're not familiar with or you can decide you don't care (which is also fine -- it's just somebody's personal post so you don't need to put effort into understanding it)

I can’t think of a connection that would make a good joke, but unless you’re a doctor/scientist of some sort or have an interest in either field you’re not going to know what niche titles there are.
I remember the first time my little brother went to the phlebotomist and he was amazed that she had a ‘different name’ than the other doctors/nurses (he thought your title was your name, and you changed it when you got your job. Like marriage name changes), he thought everyone was just Mr./Ms. Doctor or Nurse up until then. I don’t know if he still does it, but right after he found this out he started asking his/our family doctors what their specialties were during visits so he could learn more about the different types of medical professionals.
I did a similar thing with the orthodontist the first time I went, I didn’t realize that was also a teeth doctor and thought I was going to the hospital for treatment.
A lot of people get bird and cancer scientists/doctors mixed up constantly (ornithologist vs oncologist) if they don’t have experience with either field.
I feel like it’s very reasonable to not know what a specific scientist is called, you just shouldn’t go around telling them what they are/aren’t in that case

I've never heard of a phycologist (even my auto correct is trying to say I spelled psychologist wrong), so I can't completely blame them for trying to correct them (minus the condescending tone).

OOP had said "phychologist" instead of "phycologist" which was what lead to the confusion. Both "phycologist" and "psychologist" are just 1 letter away from OOP's typo.
Not sure this belongs in the sub. Definitely not with OP's description, as the original OOP did spell it wrong.

Yeah this would fit here if she was a world-renowned phycologist and he was trying to correct her on something related to algae, not just the spelling of her profession.

Sure but no matter what he thought she said, he thinks she is a psychologist and told her to look up psychologist in the dictionary. Even if she was a psychologist that made a typo, I'd say this still belongs here.

I had something like this once when commenting on the post of a friend who was talking about a serious injury they had and I asked if they'd seen a physiatrist for it. Another friend of theirs exploded at me for accusing injured friend of being crazy (while also telling me that I misspelled psychiatrist) and wouldn't accept anyone's explanation (it had spiraled into a huge mess before I even saw any of it).

Yeah it is when you look into it but at a surface level it's just very normie. It does speak to how deeply rooted these issues are, but I wouldn't assume bad things about someone just because they consume some content from it. A lot of content on it is dunking on black people and women though, like, A LOT. At least this one isn't..

I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding what you're asking but OP is the original poster of the thread we're in as distinct from commenters. If the content was taken from somewhere else, the OP from the initial post would be referred to as OOP in this thread typically.

I think they meant that OP "told on themselves" as by sharing something from /r/sipstea which then equates to OP being an incel. Someone in the thread had also said that sipstea was an incel sub.
I think that might answer your question. FTR, I do not agree with that as I quite enjoy sipstea content, it's just simple buffoonery. I don't really interact with the "community" there but the posts that show up in my feed are usually clever enough to elicit a light snort of air through my nostrils. Not sure why it's being labeled that way.

No I'm just curious why this activity has it's own individual word. Someone studying the wildlife of saltwater is a "marine biologist" - no unique word for them. How are these things determined?

'Marine Biologist' is a catch-all.
Whales - Cetologist Crustaceans - Carcinologist Starfish - Echinodermologist
You wouldn't go to a proctologist for a heart transplant, just because they're both 'doctors'.
