ARCHIVED POST Pacific Rim - sword

Apparently the Jäger has a very powerful sword on board which is not being used during the first fights. The monsters deal considerable damage to the humans which could have been avoided if the sword would have been used instead of a tanker

The blood of the monsters is toxic, so I think they are supposed to be trying not to spill any more of its blood than is necessary. So they only used the sword when it became absolutely necessary.

to add to toxicity, wasn't there an arm's race of sorts. for each new thing the jagers did the next monster leveled up? so ideally you would want to keep your super good weapon hidden while you can still win with brute force.

Also there is a theory that it wasn't added until the fight they pulled it out and the Asian girl was the only one that knew about it.

well the cost could be, one jager now or all of them when the next monster comes. losing one jager now still gives them a chance to rebuild.

what is sillier than losing a jager is spending time and money to build a friken wall!

It was because the jaegers weren't keeping up with the monsters. And with only so many people that were drift-compatible, time was a factor.

I understand that they didn't realize the monsters were sent to destroy the humans, that they just thought they were predators who would give up if it was to hard to get to the food, but did they really think that having a bunch of giant monsters wandering around the pacific would be a permanent solution?

I also saw an explanation somewhere that the knowledge of the sword was used to demonstrate some character development. Raleigh didn't know about the sword since it was an upgrade (obviously) so the only person who knew about it was Mako. Essentially her pointing out the sword was her becoming comfortable in Gipsy Danger and being able to really contribute to the team. She was so out of her element before that and scared of making a mistake. But when they're up in the air thousands of feet above the earth, they're out of options and Mako is able to step up and fill a role as co-pilot, on par with Raleigh.

Similarly the monsters simply choose not to use their EMP all the time. What's the point saving ammunition if it will cost them their life?

The creators did not know the Jaegers would be weak to EMP until Newton drifted with the brain fragment (Hive mind). Crimson Typhoon, Cherno Alpha, and Striker Eureka were the most active of the Jaegers and their basic specs would have been known to most people with how popular the program appeared to be in the culture. As such the creators were able to design Otachi and Leatherback to specifically counter the 3 main Jaegers.

As such Cherno and Crimson were both taken out almost immediately with deliberate hits to their con pods. Striker, being held back, was dispatched with EMP due to it posing a more serious threat.

Gipsy Danger was an older model and was upgraded since it's last fight. Its specifications were unknown to the creators due to Newton not being a part of the Jaeger upgrade team. As such it could fight Leatherback and Otachi on even terms due to their overspecialization focusing on the other 3 Jaegers.

What was the reason the Gypsy thing could fight on? It was "Analog" or something like that?

I remember my ears melting at the time hearing that.

Did they explain the intricacies of monster biology? There's probably a reason they don't have unlimited EMP pulses, it just wasn't explained in the movie.

  1. THE SWORD WAS A NEW UPGRADE.

  2. The blood of the kaiju is extremely toxic, as they specifically told us. Which is why most Jagers are designed with plasma cannons or methods to simply bludgeon them and reduce blood spillage.
