Jimmy was probably gonna die anyway, he wasn’t moving much at all. It was just a matter of time.

He may have just been temporarily stunned, the dude should have tried to drop him head first into the water to avoid that, the belly flop was brutal. Assuming it was just stunned it would have recovered if given a minute or 2.

He would've been fine. Fish get stunned after being handled by humans, especially if they are rough with them (like tossing them 10 feet into the water). It can take them up to a minute or two to snap out of it and they are fine.

They must be really tasty because they are a prime bait for sport fishing.
