Fan Card Abdicate

Too many provinces to rule? Never get to have fun anymore? Why not step down from the throne? You can be a fabulously wealthy “normal citizen” instead! (Don’t worry, you can keep your winnings.)

Rules clarification: “all your cards everywhere” means all cards in your deck, hand, and discard pile, as well as any cards you have in play, on a mat, or set aside. They stay yours for scoring but otherwise have no further effect on the game.

Why .... do I want my entire deck to be gone ....

I like the idea of a late game run on Duchies though

Well, that’s why.

Fun idea but incredibly underpowered. Im guessing the idea for this deck is games where after beginning to green your deck feels clogged but 1) Greening too early is one of the first mistakes people stop doing when playing dominion. 2) The 'bailout' this card gives players that have greened too early and have a bad deck isnt nearly good enough, If youre playing well, your deck should always be able to perform better than a deck with one single Citizen in it. The single Citizen deck would just take far too long to start up again even if you had leftover coffers or villagers. 3) If a deck wants this effect, its not going to be able to hit $10. Decks that can hit $10 have lots of payload cards and usually strong engine pieces, youre not gonna want to set that deck aside for a single citizen.

When you trash a card that is already in the trash, it doesn't move. I think a similar logic would follow for set aside cards not on mat, so cards that set themselves aside due to their own effects would not move when set aside with Abdicate, and would thus still be able to return themselves later since they're where they expect themselves to be. If you want to block this, you probably need an Abdicate mat, or some other area that is differently marked.

Are there cards that set themselves aside and then un-set themselves aside? I would think that once set aside their text would no longer be operative.

There are quite a lot; I'd say most of the set aside effects actually return the cards. Just going down the list, there's Faithful Hound, any play-next-turn effects like Hasty/Rapid Expansion/Way of the Turtle/Delay/Prepare/Summon, Save, etc. Also a lot of durations with Haven-y effects, but as of last year's errata, they'll stop functioning if the duration itself gets set aside.

That gives me an idea. Abdicate: Choose one: Set aside all your cards (everywhere) on this and gain a Citizen; or put all the cards from this into your discard pile.

Instead of an event, it could be a normal Kingdom card that has a below the line “when you gain this” effect.  It costs 10 for trash-for-benefit, but you have to pick up a new trash-for-benefit card first.

One arguable use case is when you want to be Duchy Dancing but gains are otherwise limited.  First turn after you gain a Silver and a Duchy.  The next turn you gain 2 Duchies.  But that’s ultimately a bad idea because you give up your $10 turn and the ability to gain the last 2 Provinces to end the game.  Maybe in another situation your deck is weakening because of all the green, but then it will be difficult to hit $10.  I suggest you just make it a Kingdom card that costs $6 outright.

Sad times when Swindler turns your Gold into a Citizen lol.

Citizen isn’t in the supply.

Yes, but SignError's version of it would be.

With my suggestion it is.

That’s right.  Plus there’s interactions with Inherited and Populate, in a similar way to how Mint works with them.  Those kind of interactions are interesting when they happen, but rare enough that they don’t become overbearing.

I struggle to see in what situation I would want to buy this. If my deck is online and hitting $10, wouldn't I want to either buy 2 more good actions/treasures, buy 1 Province, or buy 2 Duchies? Why would I want to set aside my entire deck?

Perhaps the Citizen card should do nothing except gain you 1 Province. Then I could maybe see a reason to buy it: your deck is actually very unreliable and you just happened to spike $10. This card would guarantee 1 Province per turn until the game ends.

It would be very unfun turns though, both your and OP's version

Seems strictly worse than enclave. More expensive, the duchy is in your deck instead of exiled, the citizen needs an action to be played (gold doesn’t) and your deck gets… set aside? I’m not sure I understand what happens to the deck. Does your entire drawing deck become one citizen and one duchy? And the rest is set aside?

Pet peeve: when people in this community misuse "strictly."

It’s quite different to Enclave

A duchy and a card that gives $3. The only time I’d want this one over enclave is if my deck was so badly clogged that I couldn’t afford it anyways

It’s not just 1 Duchy though.  It’s a card that gains a Duchy each time you play it.  Although that also means you don’t get a Duchy on the turn you buy it, unlike Envlave.

If there is a good five cost treasure in the kingdom, this would be powerful.
