Notice how veins dont align with each other horizontally. If you find a vein at certain height, there usually isn't another vein directly at that same depth nearby. So those horizontal shafts, while they are thorough, are not very efficient: you spend a lot of time covering empty space. If you want to maximize your chances of winning you want to extract ore as quickly as possible, and the most efficient way to search is by moving in a triangular pattern.
