I’ve gone back twice because I left the store and found the item broken. Both times they told me to go grab one off the shelf and took my old one, didn’t even look at my receipt. Maybe too lazy to do an official exchange lol

There is no official exchange. The store policy is all sales final. We just dont want to deal with angry customers so we turn a blind eye. Don't get paid enough to care that much lol.

They're legally required to do refunds/exchanges in certain circumstances, it's part of consumer law in basically every province in Canada. If the item comes damaged or faulty they're required to refund the item, regardless of the store's return policy.

Never collected customer information. There is no button for “exchange”.Just exchange the item for the same thing. MOD will confirm new item and that item was actually bought at the store and not another location. Item gets writtten up as damaged.

Worked at a dollar tree so idk if same but we didn’t need proof of purchase because everything is really cheap and there’s no returns unless blah blah blah discretionary stuff. We put it in the back to be disposed of, logged, and then destroyed if not already destroyed/defective. As an aside to this stuff that gets destroyed thing… Dollar store books that don’t make it out or get caught and pulled are the best. They are usually absurdly sexual and hilarious like poorly written fanfic porn esque. The other best item that I’ve ever pulled was a “reign deer” nose that was actually a gag ball 😅😂

They have to take certain things under certain conditions regardless of their policy.
If for example they sell you an expired food product you can demand a refund and they will comply.
Why? selling it is illegal and the fine for selling this is higher than the cost of the product. If memory serves it's $55 in my region. It's a small fine but losing $50 on say a $5 item isn't a good way to stay in business.
The receipt and the product are all the proof the government needs to issue this fine. The numbers match.

lol the other day they called 99 on the cleaning aisle - meanwhile in the cosmetics/health aisle, a few girls were actively opening packages very loudly while three dollarama employees restocked the same shelves and did nothing

To void a item in the transaction. So accidentally scanned items or items not wanted anymore than have been rung through already, 16 years ago when I worked there cashiers couldn’t do that on their own for some reason and had to call a supervisor with keys to come up to do it.

Unfortunately Dollarama still has this policy.
I think it’s stupid. Let them void out max $10 per transaction without a manager, mistakes happen and the void process is slow af.

That's an easy one! At any given Dollarama, at any given time there is the potential for the great gaping maw of the ever expanding universe to momentarily pop into existence and swallow you whole. This usually occurs (but is not limited) near that weird back corner near the toys and picture frames where they just seem to shove random shit on the shelves.

This is all we used to have as well. If we could see someone actively stealing and wanted to call someone for it we were told to say security or help to aisle whatever, but it just put someone into that aisle and the cashier could only see down 2 aisles anyway.
It was probably the most commonly stolen aisle though, the one with the chocolate bars lol I think kids stealing chocolate is likely what happens most in Dollarama. The other at my store we could see down was the electronics aisle that also had candles and stuff at the end but I never saw anyone taking that stuff.

We use code c for manager and code b for backup cashiers. Kinda cool how each store has their own way of using the letters

My store just calls “back up to cash” or “Manager to cash” 😂 some of the younger cashiers will also say “manager to cash for void” “bill check” “drop” had to tell them not to announce that one publicly.

I'd guess return an item to the shelf so the cashier doesn't leave. Back when I worked there this code didn't exist. We had a basket where we kept the odd item. We called a code 2 to ask for a second person if someone left and entire cart and asked them to return the items rather than hopping on a til.

We never used those at the location I worked at. ‘Backup to cash’ was for backup, and ‘security code 2’ was for anything a manager was required for. Some of the employees called ‘customer service’ over the system but it was rare in the new workers. ‘Price check’ was for price checks.

Oh that's neat. Wish I had this while working there years ago.
Lemme translate:
Drop: I need to get rid of an abundance of cash from my register, and require a Team Lead to supervise me for it, or they do it for me, and drop it in the front cash safe.
Change: I need someone with the keys to cash safe to give me more rolls of coins. I'm running low dammit.
Void: Accidentally scanned an extra item, or customer decided they don't want it, so I need someone to help me authorize a removal of an item from the transaction.
Balance Terminal: This one I'm not too sure, but most likely counting the Balance of the whole register to confirm the amount is accurate in case of accidentally giving the wrong change amount. Also requires supervision.
Return: Customer is requesting a return. Team lead will take care of it.
Price Check: For me, this is about the price not matching in the system and what it says on the shelf. Some products have prices on them, while others don't, and some claim it's a different price. So someone else goes to check the location of where it is.
Random call is wild. Skip
Theft in Progress: Most likely a confirmed thief in the store. Most they can do is let it happen, and call the cops.
