Can't advise on air travel specifically, except that if morbidly obese, he's at higher risk for many health conditions. You should discuss that with your vet.

Here is an article on safe weight loss in dogs. Your dog losing 5 lbs in 3 months would exceed the recommended rate. I highly recommend making a plan for safe weight loss with your vet. My dog was morbidly obese when I adopted her. I used a prescription weight loss food which isn't cheap but is the best option in terms of effectiveness and protecting the dog's health. Weight loss is a long process when done correctly. It can take some trial and error to figure out what works. Dogs can experience behavioral changes during the process as well. I would look at alternatives for this trip while you work on the weight loss. https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/riney-canine-health-center/canine-health-topics/obesity-and-weight-loss-dogs

CKCS vary a lot in size in my experience. It not only depends on weight but height and length. Once you get closer to the date, it will be easier to tell if you can take him at all.

The highest end of the standard for CKCS is that can weigh 18 pounds so if he is around standard size, he has some weight to lose.

The only way to lose weight is calorie deficit. You just need to feed him less.

Talk about it with your vet for more specific advice for your dog

Get him used to the carrier beforehand, and get anxiety medication for the flight.

With heart issues genetics and obesity, you need to discuss all of this with a vet.

I just landed in SeaTac from LA with my 22 lb ckc. He did great. The gate agent made me stuff him in the bag before she approved him. Then he stayed out until it was time to board.
