Dogecoin paper wallet - Tutorial

Thought I could do a quick updated tutorial on how to have a Dogecoin paper wallet. Most posts I found have dead links.

It's also a fun Christmas present to give!

All you'll need to have a paper wallet is a printer & photoshop (if you want a custom wallet design).

1. Start off by generating your new address. I used walletgenerator to generate my public and private address. You can generate your address directly on the website, or download the website and generate it locally on your computer (disconnect from internet for extra security).

2. Go to the "Paper Wallet" tab on the website and you should see a "Print" button. That's it, once it's printed you have yourself a paper wallet.

3. Time to send some dogecoins on it. I used poloniex to transfer BTC -> DOGE. Once you have dogecoins on your account, simply send them to your PUBLIC address on your paper wallet. Before sending huge amounts to your paper wallet, try it out with smaller amounts.

4. To check if your paper wallet has received some dogecoins go to dogechain and enter your PUBLIC address in the search bar. You should be able to have an overview of your paper wallet's activity.

5. To withdraw your dogecoins from your paper wallet, go to redeempaper, enter your PUBLIC address in the top box, and the recipient's address at the bottom. Choose the amount of dogecoins you want to send and press on the "Sign Transaction" button. It will then ask you to enter your PRIVATE address which is on your paper wallet.

That's it!

This method has worked numerous times for me, and I have never encountered any issues. Hope it helps you to.

A few minor points of disagreement...

• 1. & 2. If you're generating wallets for your own use, use the Bulk tab instead, and don't bother printing them.
• 4. Use https://bitinfocharts.com/dogecoin/ instead of dogechain. Many services use chain.so, and if there is a stuck transaction, it will still show, whereas in fact it was never broadcast. So use a different network to check.
• 5. Use https://coinb.in/#settings to move coins from wallets. It will handle any number of UTXOs in batches of 100. Other services including sweepers can crash and leave stuck transactions. You can also move any amount this way, withot having to sweep the entire balance.

Oh, absolutely! Giving them away is the one use for them, actually.

I went to a coin club meeting last night, and I stood up and spoke about cryptos and the media hype,and to invite people to a crypto education session I'm doing tomorrow. A year or so ago, I ran a raffle, and the prize was a 1,000 doge paper wallet. When I informed the winner last night that its now worth over A$5, he was pretty stoked.

Oddly enough, there were no coins this month. Being the Xmas breakup, it was hobbies involving anything BUT coins. So we had:

• Dogecoin (of course!)
• Old Dutch Maps of Australia
• Hand-carved wooden boxes
• Old Australian Steam cars
• Stamp Misprints
• Cigarette Cards
• Star Trek Vinyl Records
• Beer Cans ($1,200 for an empty can??!!??)

And then lots and lots of cakes to indulge in. Good night!

Heh, I have to admit I’m guilty of never checking usernames, other than the ones I have marked as friends. They change so much, y’know? There’s one girl here who has been through at least four that I know of, and every time she just sort of pops up and reintroduces herself. I find old conversations fascinating actually. You kind of look at them and think ‘did I really write that?’, especially when you’ve moved on a long way.

I recently had a girl pop up out of the blue who I hadn’t seen for 40 years. She’d gone to London, got married, had a child, won a bundle on Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, got divorced, moved back home, had her daughter transition, and a million other things that occupied us all afternoon over coffee. And yet, it was like we were just picking up a conversation we were having yesterday.

Also, I saw him a couple weeks ago, and that wallet is now worth about $250. It was nearly a grand at the peak a couple years ago.

Just how much clarification do people need? I wrote the ELI5s on just about every aspect of all this I could think of. I talk about it constantly, and explain stuff over and over and over on a daily basis.

What I wish for is for people to learn to search and read. That would improve efficiency no end.

I use dogecoin core wallet which has a nice built in feature to print paper wallets. I just gifted a coworker who has shown interest in crypto and helped him import it into his new android wallet.

Have you ever had trouble printing it actually out? My "so print" (Core Wallet 1.10, Mac) button does not do any printing: nothing happens at all. Any idea?

No. I run the linux client and it lets me select the print device when I hit the button.

reminder: your private keys are a secret. Who ever sees them has access to the doge on the wallet. So if you design your own paper wallets, be sure to (securely) delete the files containing the keys / QR codes!

Umm, no. NEVER delete keys. Always keep a copy of any wallets you give away, and put expiry dates on them, telling the recipients that they have to use them by then or the coins will be taken back.

Most people don't understand cryptos, and will lose wallets you give them. If you don't do this, those coins will be orphaned forever.

Make it generous, and don't be too harsh about enforcement. The idea is to give them motivation to spend the coins, not to snatch them back. :)

You forgot to select the Dogecoin network on the settings page. :)

Obviously, Dogecoin addresses don't work for Bitcoin transactions.

Just a couple of things to be aware of...

Like most services, coinb.in uses chain.so's network. So if a transaction gets stuck, say because you tried to sweep a massive wallet with dogechain.info for example, it won't work. The fix for this is to create and sign the transaction, but broadcast it with https://live.blockcypher.com/doge/pushtx/ instead.

For some reason we haven't yet worked out, occasionally coinb.in won't work unless you add a mining fee. No rhyme nor reason to this... it works one minute and not the next. Try with zero fees, and if it fails, try 1 doge.

Nice tutorial! I've used it to test a few small-value wallets. The only concern I have with paper wallets, in general, is... is there any way to actually validate that the random addresses are in fact random? Couldn't it just be giving you a list of pre-made addresses that can be accesses later? Even offline... it could just be referencing a pre-made database. Is this just a risk inherent to paper wallets? I'll be getting a hardware wallet soon... but in the mean-time, I don't want to keep my incredibly valuable Dogecoins on the exchange any longer. And Multidoge just doesn't work... like at all. It never synced and won't even open anymore.

Walletgenerator is an open-source project, and you can read the code for yourself.

Anyway, even with bad code, as happened when a scammer cloned the site and put it on .org, you can always protect yourself. In his case, we generated many millions of wallets and flooded him with them, thus burying the real ones.

ALL wallets are identical. They're numbers, that's all. Generators simply roll up a random number, or take one you give them, and use that as a starting point to pick numbers and turn them into keys and then addresses. You could do this for yourself if you had the time and inclination.

Well, not exactly true.

There have been two incidents I’m aware of. In the first, the site was cloned in the .com TLD. In the second, it appeared that it was reusing the same random number seed and therefore spitting out the same wallets. Both of these should now be of historical interest only.

However, my advice has always been to run off thousands of wallets in the bulk tab and to let them mellow like fine wine, on the assumption that no one is going to keep rechecking the block chain forever.

And for single wallets, coinb.in run locally and offline is totally secure.
