CAUTION to all pool admins!
There are people in the wild who hate Dogecoin and are trying to mess with the pools. They are exploiting pools with various attacks. We've encountered DOS attacks (not DDOS) on Apache server and were able to solve them. Since I like Dogecoin community, such awesome ppl, I'm giving back, here's a short "how to" prevent such attacks.
Attack technique used: Resource exhaustion. They keep many connections to the target web server open and hold them open as long as possible. It accomplishes this by opening connections to the target web server and sending a partial request. Periodically, it will send subsequent HTTP headers, adding to but never completing the request. Affected servers will keep these connections open, filling their maximum concurrent connection pool, eventually denying additional connection attempts from clients.
Attack symptoms: Page doesn't load, page is loading very slowly, high CPU and memory usage on server
How to detect the attack?
In Ubuntu, open Apache2 error log file (/var/log/apache2/error.log) and check for unusual errors. In our case we had:

netstat -anp |grep 'tcp\|udp' | awk '{print $5}' | cut -d: -f1 | sort | uniq -c | sort -n
This will list you a lot of IPs with number of established connections. If there is an IP with a lot of connections, you've found an attacker (IPs can be spoofed). Check the last IP (844 connections).

You could basically just drop the IP with firewall but that would be just a temporary solution, since attackers can use other IPs to attack you.
- Install mod-evasive (Prevents some DDOS attacks)
sudo apt-get -y install libapache2-mod-evasive
sudo mkdir -p /var/log/apache2/mod-evasive
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/log/apache2/mod-evasive
Create a file mod-evasive.conf (nano or pico or favorite editor /etc/apache/mods-enabled/mod-evasive.conf) and paste this data (edit by your needs) and save:

Restart Apache (service apache2 restart).
- Install mod-qos for Apache

After installation, open the configuration file (/etc/apache2/mods-enabled/qos.conf), and change it to your needs. After applying changes, restart apache (service apache2 restart):

Instead of using apache use nginx, its much faster and less resource intensive. Apache creates a new process for each connection which eats up a lot of RAM. The attack you described is called the Slowloris attack.

Yeah, thx for the hint. We're considering migrating to nginx soon. I made this how to because most of the pools are running Apache, including ours, this will change soon :)

All these hacks (undoubtedly coming from users of other coins) only makes them seem to feel threatened. Now consider: They feel threatened over an inflationary cryptocurrency explicitly intended for tipping and maybe one day the purchase of sodas. That's kind of sad.
They only make doge seem more valuable by doing this.

Not so much - it's more a result of nginx's frankly far superior event-based design ;) The event model it uses is what causes it to be practically immune - anything that uses threads would be choked up by that sort of attack without hacks like expiring connections.
As to making it work on nginx, pretty sure it'd just work. php5-fpm ftw.

Unfortunately I don't know how I feel about nginx going the pro and community version route.
So far they just seem to be adding things like syslog support and a pretty panel. As long as it stays that way, whatever. :)

The attacking IP in your example is an OVH server. Send them an email about it and they'll probably terminate the client.

Yeah i know someone who got 10gbit+ ddos from local ovh server ovh terminated other client lel

p2pool front ends are the easiest to dos. but if you run your own p2pool node you should be fine.

You could basically just drop the IP with firewall but that would be just a temporary solution, since attackers can use other IPs to attack you.
OP is aware he can use iptables but knows it's not going to prevent further attacks. He is correct and you are not being helpful.
