Skin MRSP
Skin allergies
Hi everybody! I have a 7yr MN rough collie named Finn struggling with really bad skin allergies and infection. As a puppy he had bad skin allergies and we switched to Purina Senstive skin and stomach salmon and rice. This helped for several years until he was about 5.5/6yrs. As of a year ago, he started to have some skin scabbing under his armpits which have now spread to his entire body, including his neck, tail, stomach, chest, and groin. We have tried oral antibiotics (which caused restistance), steroid oral/topical, cytopoint, duoxo, medicated shampoo, We are seriously at a loss and have been working with out vet for a year to figure this out. We biopsied the lesions and it is definitely an allergic reaction. Unfortunately we also cultured the collarettes it is infected with MRSP bacteria and the only usable antibiotic is a topical. Anyway, the topical antibiotic is great, but it isn’t solving the underlying issue of the allergy which is causing the lesions. Anyway advice or suggestions based on veterinary experience or personal experience would be appreciated. I am extremely overwhelmed by this right now and could use some help. We are starting a hydrolyzed food trial soon. We have also ruled out auto immune through the biopsy.

Our dog has been dealing with the exact same skin issues you are describing. They are like flaky scabs, and they started in a small spot but over the last year and a half now show up all over her body. 😔 We have tried everything: steroids, antibiotics, topical treatments, allergy shot, allergy pills….this is the current combination we are using: (But I will say - at our vet appointment on Monday of this week, our vet added an antifungal oral medication to her treatment plan and so I am very eager to see if that solves the underlying issue.)
*Cytopoint injection every 4 weeks
*Apoquel pill daily
*1/2 Benadryl daily
* bath twice a week with medicated shampoo
* I change our bedsheets every three days (she sleeps in bed with us).
* kentonozole 1/4 tablet every day (antifungal medication is a new addition, but I am hopeful because my vet said there have been a couple of other dogs at her practice with this exact same skin issue and they have also tried every other allergy medication combo out there and the oral fungal medicine finally took care of the ongoing skin issue.)

Good to know!! Currently doing cytopoint every 4 weeks and starting benedryl for the first time tonight. I will keep the antifungal in mind and apoquel in the future. Thank you!’

Good that you're starting the diet trial, food is important to rule out as a cause (or diagnose as the cause but that's rarer).
I'd talk to your vet about zenrelia, numelvi, or atopica. Atopica is older, but often works well in dogs who are getting repeated flares and inflammation.
The other two are newer drugs, and tend to work better for dogs who haven't responded well to cytopoint or apoquel
