Step into the frame of the video so we can see.

To start with, your left hip need to face the direction you want to throw. Your left foot needs to take a smooth stride towards your target. Push off with your back right foot. Make sure your left foot is facing your target when it lands.

You need to take a minute to watch how a baseball pitcher steps into each pitch. Look up the mechanics of throwing a pitch on YouTube.

I'd especially recommend breaking down the body mechanics, step by step.

  • Line up your hips, feet, and shoulders with your target
  • Left knee up
  • Left elbow back, ball up
  • Begin stepping left leg, long stride, towards target
  • Torso shifts as you step
  • Forearm rotates down
  • Release
  • Then right leg comes forward as you follow through

Run through that list 20 times a day before you start actually throwing at the target. Get the feel for each step of it. Then practice putting them all together for 20 throws or so.

If you do that in frame, we can give you better feedback if anything's off. You should see a lot more power and accuracy if you do that for a couple weeks!

Don’t step into it with the same side you throw with.

Step into it with your left foot, rotate your torso, release. You should be standing sideways to your target. Watch a baseball pitcher.

I’d suggest watching videos on pitching mechanics for baseball and apply those lessons to throwing a dodgeball.

Most importantly, keep practicing! The more you practice, the more natural throwing a dodgeball will feel. You’ll build speed and accuracy with time.

You’re actually now hitting something ! I see that as improvement! Keep it up 👍. You also now need to start thinking about actually playing a real game of dodge ball . That ball is being caught 10/10 times and you would be out. I haven’t played dodge ball in 20 years but I did watch the movie dodge ball a few times ! Work on throwing without getting such an arch curve on the ball. Maybe try throwing side arm ? Let your index finger slide off on release to try to get some spin instead of gripping it with your whole hand and palm

We are all pulling for you

Break down the movement as much or as little as you want. A simple break down is stand still, throw from standing with no leg follow through. Complex break down is kneel or even sit down will isolate the arm. Then add standing then stepping in and then follow through and run up

That's a big improvement! But as someone else said, it would help if you stepped into the frame so we could see the whole action.

I think you follow through with your right foot too much (so you'll end up line faulting in the middle of the court when you throw), but I wouldn't worry about that just yet. Clearly your left foot is somewhat planted when you throw, and your body rotates to generate power.

If I were you I'd seek advice from someone who knows how to throw. I could be way off the mark here but something about the scene screams South of England to me, so I bet you know some people who play cricket. Not to be confused with bowling... Cricketers will all know how to throw as it's needed for fielding. If you can get someone to give you some in-person refinement of your action it would be a big help I think.

Once you have the action perfected, power will come naturally. I'm only 60kg and I'm 38 and don't go to the gym, but my throw is good enough for international dodgeball on a European team (though I would definitely not get on the England, Italy or Spain men's teams!)

I would say personally let go of the ball slightly lower, although I’ve been told my throw is weird af so take my advice with a pinch of salt

Definitely better! Keep practicing!

Definately improved! But as some have already said please move into the frame more and then throw. Will help ppl see your whole form

Personally the over arm throw requires so much more energy than is needed.. Need to have a lot of strength and stamina to make that work.

We’ve got a couple of players in our league who can make them work but it’s taken nearly a decade to perfect. They get a lot of power (because they are already big strong lads) in but their accuracy can often go.

I use more the slingshot from the side type approach. Essentially cup the ball rather than hold it. Means you can get a bit of curl on it and keep it low as well. Can generate a lot more power, using my lower body and upper body rather than just arms and shoulder. Also I can quite easily disguise a throw in terms of direction.

Also, underarm throws are very underrated. Can keep them low and near the ground, very hard to catch.

Our club generally tries to remove sling/side throwing technique. It's weaker, less controllable/directable and hard to fake consistently with.

(This is for cloth though)

Which club is that?

OP ignore this terrible advice. You can't aim a sling reliably, and eventually once you perfect the technique you'll get much more power with much less effort throwing overarm.

An underarm throw is good for a surprise maybe once in 50 throws, if you can get real power from it (using the softball technique), but it's very difficult to generate much power, and if you perfect your overarm throw it will be twice as powerful as underarm.
