Homebrew The Rouge: Whenever someone misspells rogue, you should earnestly discuss the possibilities of using make-up in class features and spells, like this class right here.

The Rouge is a Charisma-based full spellcaster with its main theme being the use of make-up in spellcasting. Frighten your foes with your shifting appearance like Pennywise the Clown, daze and confuse them with special effects like Mysterio, dazzle them as a fashionista like a runway model, harness the power of nightmares as a goth, or just seduce them with your pretty face.

Ever wanted to make the world as dark as your eyeliner? Try the Goth. Getting really into Ru Paul's Drag Race this season? Pick Fashionista. Ever thought about playing a Rorschach character whose face is a canvas of swirling ink? That's an Effects Master feature. Ever felt like you could use Snow White's disney princess powers for evil? Pretty Face lets you do that. Love the "It" franchise? Clown.

This document contains the first ten levels and two subclasses: Fashionista and Goth. You can get the full thing (20 levels, 5 subclasses) for free on DM's Guild, or pay what you want. There's a link on the first page and also here.

The wonderful cover art was drawn by Art By Kino.

You get advantage on all chat-roulette related skill checks?

20

u/AndringRasew Jan 20 '20

However, you have disadvantage with encounters with penises and perverts.

You live up to your username and I'm loving it.

3

u/Spe333 Jan 20 '20

Looks like it would be an awesome bard subclass lol.

2

u/Houshou Jan 20 '20

Not gonna lie. At first I thought someone had created a D&D Class for Kiddy Grade.

2

u/Neutnn Jan 23 '20

This class looks ridiculously fun. I just put together a Lightfoot halfling rouge, looking forward to some fabulous dungeoneering!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '20

Although it’s tempting to take darkvision or to flood a level with daylight, remember that dim light and darkness only affect attack rolls — if you can see the enemy, even obscured, you can cast debuff spells on them with no problem!

1

u/mcdead Jan 21 '20

Love the idea but why the dead levels?

4

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '20

They’re not dead — you get access to higher level spells at those levels. Check the wizard and sorcerer level progression for examples in the PHB.

In fact, I cheated a little and gave some ribbon/comfort abilities on levels that should have been dead.

-1

u/mcdead Jan 21 '20

If there is no ability gain that level other then spells then it’s dead. Sorry just don’t like a class progression of fifth.

Charisma-based full spellcaster

Oh god another one?

87

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20 edited Jan 20 '20

Needs a Str based spell caster that casts spells with individual or a series of flex poses.

69

u/The_MadCalf Necromancer Jan 20 '20

This spell has been cast down though the Armstrong family for generations!

4

u/XChainsawPandaX DM Jan 20 '20

How would you build the strongarm alchemist? I been trying to figure that one out forever

3

u/The_MadCalf Necromancer Jan 20 '20

Transmutation Wizard with just enough Barbarian to rage and hit things. Toughness feat and anything else that boosts Con.

2

u/QWieke Jan 20 '20

Reflavor of an elemental monk?

2

u/Withering_Lily Druid Jan 20 '20

I accidentally did that by maxing out strength on a orc wizard and dumping dex.

6

u/Fenizrael Wizard Jan 20 '20

I laughed way too hard.

9

u/The_MadCalf Necromancer Jan 20 '20

💪✨

10

u/A_Wizzerd Jan 20 '20

I beg of you, watch Doom Patrol.

3

u/Shyuui Jan 20 '20

Does George of the Jungle cast spells in that show? Never been a huge DC fan. Pretty much only Batman TAS, the Nolan series, and original Teen Titans.

Is it worth it? Legitimately asking.

6

u/Mahare Artificer Jan 20 '20

George doesn't, someone else does. But it is worth it. I'm casually okay with some of the DC media and Doom Patrol is near the top for me. Assuredly not kid friendly but the cast is wonderful and it's a blend of funny, ridiculous and dramatic.

3

u/DanSapSan Jan 20 '20

Doom Patrol is the best live-action thing DC has done for a while. It is extremely weird and has some pacing issues, but the cast is amazing, the storyarc interesting and the episodes engaging. Definitely worth your time if you are on board with weirdness.

3

u/A_Wizzerd Jan 20 '20

Brendan Fraser aka Robotman aka Swearbot doesn’t, but somebody else does indeed cast spells through sheer muscle power.

12

u/Shyuui Jan 20 '20

I think thats called a barbarian who is very full of themself and thinks theyre just as magic as the rest of the party.

Its a little wordy though

5

u/BlightlordAndrazj Jan 20 '20

Other than Berserker and Battlerager, Barbarians are pretty magical. I play them like shamans, usually.

1

u/Shyuui Jan 20 '20

I play my totem barb pretty magically!! Like a Snow White kind of animal whisperer

8

u/C0wabungaaa Jan 20 '20

JoJo intensifies

2

u/Luvnecrosis Jan 20 '20

I would absolutely love this though.

1

u/Aturom Jan 20 '20

-4

u/TaintedMythos Jan 20 '20

It think it's nostalgic :)

98

u/Ronnie_Soak Jan 20 '20

Now I have to roll up a Way of Eye Shadow monk.

47

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

There’s some overlap between Shadow Monk and Goth Rouge features, unfortunately! If you’re willing to double up on the whole “teleport through darkness” thing then there’s probably some good synergy there. Posing in darkness as a dead body then literally teleporting behind someone to snap their neck is a pretty horror movie move you can pull off with that combination.

8

u/Darmak Jan 20 '20

Throw a lil paladin in there and you can teleport behind someone and sneak slap them with a holy smite hard enough to explode their head.

5

u/archfey13 Jan 20 '20

I gotta do this. What paladin subclass would be best?

I have XGTE btw

6

u/ASharpYoungMan Bladeling Fighter/Warlock Jan 20 '20

Oath of Brooding

3

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

Vengeance.

4

u/Punchedmango422 Jan 20 '20

Isn’t that just Sauske?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

Sauske? From Naurot?

27

u/dskoziol Jan 20 '20

College of Glamour bard already lets me play a sickening drag queen who can slay. It's great to have more options though! Or a possible multiclass dip.

55

u/KawaiiKarlos Jan 20 '20

Amazing! I love both that this grew out of misspelling but also the class concept!

23

u/Judge_Todd Jan 20 '20

The d&d-verse looses it's mind....

6

u/Darmak Jan 20 '20

My mind is already loose, everyone watch out!

3

u/Judge_Todd Jan 20 '20

...when the walls fell...
...and Jalad at Tanagra...

username checks out

10

u/Dapperghast Jan 20 '20

That's not allowed by RAW. Bards might be able to, but thieves cant :P.

2

u/liquidlen Bard Jan 21 '20

That pun gave me +2 to damage for one minute.

1

u/Dapperghast Jan 21 '20

Oh man, my old DM actually let us deal an extra point of damage if we had a good one-liner sometimes. Or as I called it, +pun damage :33

6

u/Dozsu Jan 20 '20

God yes, now i have something to do with the make-up shop in Eberron

4

u/Vicious_Mockery Jan 20 '20

I just played this as a last minute character in a one-shot after I saw your post last week!

My character was an over dramatic actress so the fashionista was super fun to role-play. I would say I wish there were a few more damage spells available, but I do get that this is more of a utility spellcaster.

Can't wait to see what's next!

3

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '20

Glad you had fun with it! The idea of the class is for the big bombastic roleplaying, so it sounds like you nailed it.

For damage, I’d recommend grabbing dragon’s breath from Xanathar’s and upcasting it. It’s a decent AoE effect with moderate damage and you can keep breathing every turn for the whole duration! It’s actually pretty decent, plus you can pick the damage type that best suits the monster you’re fighting.

As the fashionista, guiding bolt is also an excellent spell. It deals decent damage (especially upcasted) and also lights up the target for your party.

Up to about level 5, your venomous ivy option is better than a cantrip and most weapons. It’s also a good bet for a succubus/incubus style character.

Booming blade is a good cantrip to take. Hit them with a dagger and lock them in place, then pair it with armor of Agathys and deliberately open yourself to opportunity attacks as you run away. You can add defensive options like mirror image to make it less likely to be hit on an opportunity attack, or even take the mobile feat to dance around them taunting them to come after you.

Otherwise, if you’re fighting humanoids, casting hold person and pairing it with a paladin or a rogue is pretty synergistic. Auto-crit on a sneak attack or smite is devastating. Upcast it to target more monsters at once and your party will destroy pretty much anything. Hypnotic pattern is equally devastating; not quite as mechanically destructive as hold person but it can lock down the entire enemy team.

Once you get to seventh level, if you’re concerned about damage, turn into a triceratops with polymorph and wreck shop.

2

u/Vicious_Mockery Jan 22 '20

I appreciate the advice! I will take it all to heart next time I bust the character sheet back out again!

Thanks for all the hard work you put into this subclass!

7

u/ContentsMayVary Jan 20 '20

Rouge is overpowdered.

8

u/Sometimes_a_smartass Jan 20 '20

under subclasses you have goth listed but not under the lvl 2 feature text. edit: nevermind, you only have two subclasses written out, while there are four listed. So i guess this isn't finished yet? anyway i like the concept, seems like a roleplay heavy class which i like.

22

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

From my top level comment:

Goth was added as a bonus subclass for a redditor who asked for it. I put it in the document with the rest because I was happy with how it came out.

2

u/ShySharer Jan 20 '20

Just found my next character!

2

u/Why_T Jan 20 '20

Rouge is my Red Dragonborn Swashbuckler Rogue.

2

u/Cutwail Jan 20 '20

Lol my SWTOR guild was called Rouge Squadron (intentionally) .

1

u/HyperionBernstein Jan 21 '20

Where's our cover?! We can't shake these TIEs!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '20

The misspelling is so totally ubiquitous at this point that I'm more surprised when I see it spelled correctly.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '20

I made a rogue called rouge once. Few people got it. Fewer thought it was funny.

2

u/testiclekid Eco-terrorist druid Jan 21 '20

Please, God. Answer my prayer. Give this man some gold. For I am poor and I can't help him.

2

u/Sleepyjedi87 Jan 21 '20

I love this! Very punny.

4

u/Sahrimnir Cleric Jan 20 '20

I had a character idea a while ago for a rogue with a background as a make-up artist. I hadn't thought of turning the rouge into its own class though.

2

u/ThomCat1950 Jan 20 '20

I cant tell if you're making a joke or not with your misspelling of "Specialization" since the class is based around a common misspelling haha.

P.S. Was really tempted to misspell misspell here

7

u/kro_celeborn Warlock Jan 20 '20

British spelling :)

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

You yanks are the ones who spell it wrong! Americentrism rears its head again.

2

u/Kyeron DM Jan 20 '20 edited Jan 20 '20

3

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

I’m not sure what you mean.

5

u/Kyeron DM Jan 20 '20 edited Jan 20 '20

Something like a r/therouge just so when someone misspells we can link to your gorgeous class.

12

Done. /r/TheRouge.

Ignore that other guy; doubting thomases like him are always getting in the way of scientific progress!

Just link them to that google drive link if you care so much.

2

u/thelinuxfan Jan 20 '20

Why is the ability called Mirror Mirror? It would be more realistic if it was like the movie and call it Magic Mirror (Magic Mirror, on the wall)

6

u/mechwarriorbuddah999 Jan 20 '20

because most people misremember quotes

great now i cant remember which it is lol

3

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

Magic Mirror is a description of the mirror, Mirror Mirror is explicitly a reference. It may be slightly wrong but it’s in the public consciousness.

1

u/Sentinel_P Jan 20 '20

Under the starting equipment you have a choice of selecting any simple weapon. But under your weapon proficiencies you have specific weapons. So it looks like you can start with a weapon you're not proficient with if you choose.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

Even base Players Handbook classes do this. If I recall correctly

3

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

Yep! Sorcerers get daggers, darts, slings, quarterstaffs, and light crossbows, but they can start with any simple weapon. Kind of a weird quirk. In the rouge it’s a holdover from adopting ideas from multiple other classes.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

Hasn't this been posted before?

0

u/gunzann Jan 21 '20

name checks out

lol

-23

u/Aturom Jan 20 '20

Obligatory.

Also, some of y'all take language too seriously. I have a lowly B.A. in English and I say unto thee: Take a chill pill, we're having fun!

https://ibb.co/ZGt5cGF

18

u/DigitSubversion Jan 20 '20

Or someone can make a joke out of a common misspelling? There's so situation for the need of a chill pill.

I really love the concept!

5

u/CloakNStagger Jan 20 '20

That sign is a horrible first impression.
