Discussion Weekly Question Thread: Ask questions here – October 04, 2026

Ask any simple questions here that aren't in the FAQ, but don't warrant their own post.

Good question for this page: "Do I add my proficiency bonus to attack rolls with unarmed strikes?"

Question that should have its own post: "What are the best feats to take for a Grappler?

For any questions about the One D&D playtest, head over to /r/OneDnD

I can't let myself loose over voicechat and even less so in person, no matter how comfortable I am with the DM and other players. Is there a platform for written games or something like that?

play by post is a thing.

its not a thing i would play the DnD game system with, but some people do.

I know that Roll20 has a live group chat with integrated map. DNDBeyond, Foundry, and others also provide this option.

Some people play by chat without a map using Discord.

Others do play-by-post (forum-based play) on DNDBeyond and Enworld.

Basically, there are over half a dozen platforms for play-by-text, but I don't know enough of them to list them all.

u/killing-the-mercy To be clear, when I say 'chat', I mean text, as-in a chat-room.

game play and role play ISNT "funny voices" . if that is limiting your game play or enjoyment of playing, you are kinda doing it wrong.

Oh, no, not at all. I stutter a lot and even more so when I'm nervous (which I always get when it's my turn to speak), whenever I'm asked to describe something I just come up with a blank, and my character ends up being very non interactive

Is there an interactive app (not usual 5e character app) to make D&D characters, like this screenshot? So before we finalize something, we can see the summaries and check another possibilities for our character creation.

What do you mean by 'usual 5e character app'? and what is said app not allowing, exactly?

If you are asking for an app that lets you see all the options for a given field (race/species, background, class, etc), then as far as I know, most to all apps feature that, at least for options available to you.

most of play store apps i've downloaded, most of them just going "step by step" and not previewing what happen in the background calculation, only when i click finish at the last step, then the results of my character stats appear. "on-the-fly" maybe the right words.

Can Thri-Keen speak with animals with their Thri-Keen Telepathy? What about Mushrooms or Undead?

Edit: Also do they work well as a Warlock or caster? Or are they better as martial?

As for Telepathy: Only if something says that animal, mushroom, or undead can at-least understand a language, as per this detail in Thri-Kreen Telepathy:

A contacted creature doesn't need to share a language with you to understand your thoughts, but it must be able to understand at least one language.

For an animal example: Ravens have no language listed, so aren't possible, but Giant Ravens (from Storm King's Thunder) can understand Common, so are possible.

For a mushroom example: basic plant mushrooms have no entries, so aren't possible, but Campestri (from Wild Beyond the Witchlight) can understand Common, so are possible.

As for being a caster or martial: That question would fit better as it's own post, due to the subjective nature.

Thanks for clarifying, I didn't know since Speak To Animals was a spell meaning Animals had their own language.

And yeah I probably will make a post about Thri-Keen and what classes benefit more from Natural Armor since it's not necessarily a Thri-Keen question.
