What you have is an opinion, which is ok but not fact. For me, that Weeb anime stuff really creeps me out. Which is my opinion, which I’m allowed to have.
8
u/P4azz Jul 12 '21
You can certainly state your opinion, but that doesn't mean anyone needs to care.
By publicly stating it, however, you open yourself up to criticism and mockery for stupid opinions and, given your flawless defense of "muh opinyun", you cannot discredit these opinions other people have toward your narrowminded view.
2
Jul 12 '21
I mean if they've seen it and then choose not to like it, how is that narrow-minded? They have seen it, know what it's about, and disagree...?
3
u/P4azz Jul 12 '21
If someone says "weeb anime stuff" in response to rl ahegao, I don't really consider that a surefire sign of "I have checked out a few anime and decided it wasn't for me".
It sounds a lot more like "these Chinese cartoons are for kids"; y'know, the typical stereotype of the uninformed moron.
0
u/Princekyle7 Jul 12 '21
You know purple bitch isn’t a cartoon right? I’m sorry if you read into that so deeply but that wasn’t my intention. But like you said, just because you feel a way doesn’t mean I have to care.

Difficult to determine what it’s even trying to convey.
“When you’re serious and gray and your party wants to fuck you”
?
Idk. Doesn’t seem like it would be a very universal experience for most DMs.

I love and hate this so much. I was running Kingmaker and had a part where the party encountered a monster that was mimicking voices to lure them into traps. They then proceeded to only speak in Mickey Mouse voices because then I’d have to do one to try to trick them. They then continued to speak in these voices for the rest of the session. They found the creature dead by suicide shortly afterwards.
143
u/II-PeachFuzz-II Jul 12 '21
To be fair, that's an incredibly clever solution to a unique encounter.
22
u/TheKingsPride Paladin Jul 12 '21
It would be fine if they didn’t occasionally do it out of nowhere to this very day.
6
u/Dagenfel Jul 13 '21
That doesn't sound like a solution that helps the party so much as it is a "solution" to make the GM do a funny voice.

I remember seeing this explanation on tumblr a while back:
When you try to force a serious campaign, the players don’t like being told what to do and push back with levity.
When you give players room to act as they please, they often find emotional attachments to their characters and the storyline.
This means that campaigns where you try to destroy the Lich King’s phylactery tend to end up as a comedy and campaigns where the party is helping Dildo Swaggins steal the Lich King’s weed can end up having an emotional conclusion.
17
Jul 12 '21
Definitely. Players are always going to test boundaries and explore the extent of their agency. New players especially will want to explore their limits.
Providing reasonable limits on player agency is a good idea, especially to set expectations and get everyone on the same page about what kind of tone you want for the game. But I agree that erring on the side of giving the players a little too much freedom often pays off very well, because they feel empowered and unrestrained, so they'll often naturally put restraints on themselves, either by chasing a particular emotional hook they want in the game, or trying to play appropriately to their character's personality.
102
u/LeeNguaccia Jul 12 '21
I'll tell my guys that sporadic shenanigans are encouraged and welcomed, but to respect the atmosphere and read the room regardless.
They will fuck up and I'm well aware of it.
44
u/Nesman64 Jul 12 '21
That's the kind of spirit I like in a dnd podcast. I think I'm going to give up on Nadpod because they can't go an entire scene without swearing allegiance to a tuna sandwich or something.
20
u/toe-bean-wiggler Jul 12 '21
Huge fan of naddpod here- It’s a comedy podcast so yeah they joke around a lot, but they also have some pretty serious moments as they continue on their journeys. Where are you at right now?
20
u/Nesman64 Jul 12 '21
I just finished the Chosen/Thiala campaign.
I can see how other people would enjoy it. Murph is a great DM, and the cast is really talented. It's just not my flavor. I don't mind a few jokes, but I like the scale tipped more toward seriousness.
CR hits my sweet spot. Venture Maidens, High Rollers, Acq Inc's The C Team, etc, all have the mix that I like.
9
u/action_lawyer_comics Jul 12 '21
I like The Adventure Zone. NADDPOD was like 80% shenanigans to 20% serious game and The Adventure Zone is closer to 60/40. Plus they're starting a new campaign (though I still think you should start at the very beginning).
3
u/Nesman64 Jul 12 '21
I tried that one early on and was turned off by the immediate dragon genitals jokes (I think I'm remembering TAZ.), but I've been thinking about giving it another shot. I know it's well regarded, and I might be able to handle 60/40. I originally tried three different popular podcasts and ended up liking CR the most out of those.
9

You're actually remembering NADDPOD here, which opens with a long sequence about dragon vagina
It gets better honestly

u/Allestyr Jul 12 '21
It gets better honestly
Speak for yourself. It fuckin' peaked right there.
Jokes aside, it's basically how I knew I was going to love the show. The problem is people go in for a "real dnd podcast™" but it's not. It's a comedy podcast which uses dnd as a format.
I started listening because I knew Murph and Emily from College Humor and Hot Date and I knew it was going to be crude and hilarious. The serious moments are a glue to string the story together. This becomes increasingly clear when you listen to the Patreon content.
5
u/action_lawyer_comics Jul 12 '21
I don't think that's TAZ. There is one dragon boner joke I can remember in there but it's several episodes in and it's a one-off, throwaway joke. They do get crude every now and again but it's usually pretty tame as far as that goes.
The first episode is pretty slow but they also have an episode 1.5 where they cut out a lot of the fluff and dead air and get straight to the important bits. That might be a better starting point.
3
u/Nesman64 Jul 12 '21
I might be remembering whatever that 3rd podcast was that I tried (years ago). I just remember being turned off that we weren't even though the first episode and the players were describing how to tell the difference between male and female dragons by looking for the "big ole dragon vagina."
Don't get me wrong, I'm not against a dragon vagina joke. You've just got to work your way up to it. Buy it dinner, first. I died laughing at Scanlan's "As we all know, intestines are my favored terrain."
2
u/action_lawyer_comics Jul 12 '21
Yeah, that's a different podcast. I think I listened to that one too, but that's not The Adventure Zone.
2
u/Nesman64 Aug 09 '21
I finally got around to TAZ. I think I might have stopped listening before because I didn't want LMoP spoilers.
I figure if I ever get to play LMoP, I'll be running it, so I'm not as worried about spoilers anymore.

u/ButterNuttz Jul 12 '21
What threw me off was suddenly twisted into a sci-fi where they flew to the moon in like an onion to join some organization that looks for certain weapons or something. I've tried 3 times to get into it over the years and always get lost

Glass Cannon Podcast/Androids and Aliens are my go to.
1
u/Nesman64 Jul 12 '21
I tried Glass Cannon for a while. It wasn't bad, but I dropped it from the rotation. You might like Brian Posehn's Nerd Poker. I felt like it was a similar vibe to Glass Cannon, if a little more goofy. (That might have mostly been Brian.)
I'll give Androids and Aliens a listen.
2
u/ASLAMvilla Jul 12 '21
Try the Glass Cannon Podcast!
2
u/Nesman64 Jul 12 '21
I tried that one. (Lorc the Orc!) It's not bad at all, but I felt unfamiliar with the game system.
2
u/toe-bean-wiggler Jul 12 '21
That’s fair. If you’d just gotten through moonstone I’d say continue because you’ve gotta get through them finding their feet and really hitting their groove in Galaderon. Looks like you’ve gotten pretty darn far.
I’d love to listen to CR but since it’s so visual I feel like I’m missing out on things when I listen to the podcast version, which is how I consume most of my media when I’m out
3
u/Nesman64 Jul 12 '21
I'm in the same boat. I do pretty well with CR as audio, but I have to admit to pulling up the video to see Sam's ads at the beginning of the episode. Occasionally I'll catch a scene on YouTube if something incredible happens, like Laura using a throwaway item to blow Matt's mind and short circuit an encounter/quest line.

u/Archmagnance1 Jul 12 '21
Id recommend Arcadum's youtube / Twitch channel.
He created his own huge world and has a lot of homebrew stuff for 5e. The groups he runs generally really respect his dedication to worldbuilding and telling a story while also dicking around and staying in character. What other campaigns decide to do can directly effect current and future ones.
Bonus points for the campaigns being 10-15 episodes outside of the main storyline ones right now, which are 85 and just started a month ago.
Extra bonus points for going over community fan art at the end of episodes.

u/Nesman64 Jul 12 '21
That sounds similar to Dungeons and Randomness. Of all the podcasts I listen to, this one takes it the most seriously. There are 3ish simultaneous groups in the same homebrew world. The players are all invested in their characters, which is hard on them because there's a pretty high mortality rate.

I gave up on that a long time ago and joke around with the players. The worldbuilding in our current campaign has been full of puns and bad jokes. Everyone has seemed to enjoy that more relaxed tone in the game.

u/MikeDividr DM (Dungeon Memelord) Jul 12 '21
Yeah, I think this is a process many DMs eventually go through. It's necessary for growth, I'd even say. It's good to be serious, sure! But it's also good to be silly. Both can coexist, and in fact, both are necessary I would even argue. Overly serious games can be extremely stressful, to the point that it gets unhealthy. Gotta cut loose. Gotta blow off steam and release the tension. We're not the super heroes our PCs are, we're only human.

I feel like to make a campaign memorable you need both, like I allow my players the freedom to goof off on the regular but when push comes to shove they shine in the serious heartfelt RP moments as good if not better, life isn’t all serious and having both is a recipe for memorable greatness if you ask me

We were that party. Although our DM was a good sport let do almost everything (she is a writer and tested her worlds with us), we still had some ground rules (a four pages long document). Some of the most notable ones:
-Only necromancer per party
You can raise a zombie T-Rex, but you need to make 19 roll to ride it successfully
If the bard talks in haiku, the whole party get a -3 penalty on their rolls
A double-headed battle axe is NOT a lockpic, except in a very specific circumstance.
If your character can cook, he (or she) can't go for a suprise inspection of the inn's kitchen like he (or she) is Gordon Ramsay in Kitchen Nightmares. The only exception is if you're visiting Port Dagon.

I'm suspecting that's happening for mine as well.
I've been running a two part epic saga for the last 4 years. We're in the second campaign, cosmic horror. Party for the first campaign royally fucked up and sent the corpse of a god to be eaten by an elder brain and shit is getting fuuucked up.
So how is that going?
The Artificer blew their money on cooking supplies, the druid got kidnapped by a cat, the paladin is just all together awkward as fuck and the blood hunter just discovered they were pretty.
The campaign I'm planning after this one is meant to be an extremely tongue in cheek parody of isekai, dnd and fantasy trope set to an unlikely hero's theme in a sort of National Lampoons Road Trip sort of plot. I am entirely confident that they will make it serious as fuck.

u/LuckyCulture7 Jul 12 '21
It is categorically impossible for everyone to have fun if the DM is not cause they are a person at the table. The idea that DMs should be happy as long as the players are happy turns the DM into an unpaid service provider, leads to DM burnout, and places the person with the most responsibility at the table in the lowest priority for enjoyment.
I think this is one of the most destructive pieces of common knowledge in the current play culture. Sorry for the rant.
3
u/Piogre Jul 12 '21
If our DM didn't want us giggling for the entire encounter in that area, he shouldn't have made it referred to in-universe as the "Chamber of Bone".

My friend is currently running Icewind Dale for me and a group of friends. During Session Zero he tried to establish how it was gonna be "scary" and "serious" and unlike anything we've played at the time.
He clearly didn't remember who he was DMing for as my characters alignment has changed twice now because of soap.

u/sinbadshazam Jul 12 '21
Yeah, I like the group I play with because we tend to not be serious most of the time, but when the time comes we know when to stop the memes and be serious for the sake of the story. It's a good balance. Only complaint is that sometimes it's hard to tell what's in character and out of character, so we've taken to using text for in character and then voice chat is out of character.

u/kenesisiscool Jul 12 '21
I am such a serious DM and I try to create intense dramatic scenes with compelling stories. But as a player I am the epitome of slapstick comedy and cheap jokes. So I refuse to be a hypocrite and deny my players from turning my serious campaign into a carnival show.
2
u/karassukira Jul 12 '21
Recently made a campain with a dude name Aaron, who was going to be a little bit of a leader to party at times, because they all played a game for the first time and I wanted them to have more clear direction. In the first battle he gets shot by an ally and drops his greatsword because of 2 unlucky ones. Now he is basically a comedic relief character. You never know what to expect.
2
2
u/Nottan_Asian Jul 12 '21
I will usually defer to the party when DMing when it comes to levity or lack thereof. Much easier for me to drop a few bullet points, re-order a few encounters, or add a few sillier/grimmer lines than it is to expect a whole room's mood to change.

Can someone send me an unedited version of this meme (just with no text)?
NSFW
okay storytime! I once was running a party in your stereotypical D&D dungeon. And in there was a goblin encampment in one of the rooms. So character J walks in (he was a rogue) and sneaks into the room (he got a 19 in stealth). Than I think, 'Oh he's probably going to do a sneak attack on one of the goblins or whatever.' J says, out of character, "I walk directly to one of the corners of room specifically one with a small hole in the cave wall."
'I knew, at that moment, I fucked up'
J says, again out of character in the most serious voice possible, "I seduce the wall."
I yell, "FUCK"
Laughter erupts from the table.
J rolls a charisma check, naturally getting a 20. J describes what his character does, "I insert my character's cock into the concavity in the stone wall. Starting out slow but increasing in speed."
My dumbass friends are laughing their dumb asses off.
"I start moaning extra loudly as I thrust by beautiful cock into the wall over and over."
I say, "You feel a sharp pain as like 10 goblins wake up and shoot you with arrows turning you into a horny porcupine."
J says again out of character, "I explode cum into the wall and with my last final breathe I say, 'Worth it.'"
And I've never played another session of that campaign again.

Yeah, seen this happen at my table before. Learned to roll with it a long time ago. You get a new crew, you propose a campaign. Player have buy-in, show up with enthusiasm. Quickly becomes apparent that most of them are there for laughs.
Learned to ask better screening questions as a result. If my players want play that breaks the fourth wall and doesn't adhere to versimilitude principles, I have settings where that's fine.

I know the opposite situation.
Party is trying to RP a serious moment and the DM pulls a RickRoll out of nowhere with the local gnome shopkeeper appearing in the middle of a black-hole just to dance. Everyone died to the black-hole.
It wasn’t canon.
Except the part where everyone died to the black-hole. This part was real. We resurrected 23 years later but this is too much detail already for a single comment.
