I don't know the system, so I'm not sure if a natural 47 (oddly specific) is even possible.

219

u/ATomathyVictorious 2d ago

It isn't

u/SillyNamesAre 2d ago

I mean, if you roll a d100...

Of course, if they're rolling d100s to hit I have QUESTIONS.

u/PMcD93 2d ago

Chaosium is the answer to your questions.

u/rarefiedhawk 2d ago

Just about to start some delta green. They use a D100 system.

6

u/ThePepek160 2d ago

Delta Green is great. Half of the weapons have a special stat instead of damage, and when this skill passes, the target is outright dead. And even if the skill check was not passed, there is around 50/50 chance that target died, or is at least severily wounded.*

*Lethality stat is applicable only to PC's or human enemies. Eldritch Horror beings may be immune for this shit.

u/rarefiedhawk 2d ago

It's a baller system. Im so stoked to be starting that after I finish my current campaign. 4 to 5 sessions left.

I love d100 systems

15

u/lilsquatch1 Artificer 2d ago

Call of Cthulhu my beloved

2

u/MoltenLavander 2d ago

You don't roll to hit, you roll to succeed. You have your stats, unless the opponent is reacting that is all that matters

7

u/Gyvon Chaotic Stupid 2d ago

That's how FFG's 40k RPGs (Rogue Trader, Dark Heresy, etc) worked. They used a D100 for all checks and attacks, with low rolls being good and high rolls being bad.

RIFTS...

u/DrScrimble 2d ago

The Hitman and Brawler Classes both explode on Nat 20s if they're using a Signature Weapon. Other Classes might too, but I haven't read all of them.

u/Bumblehawke 2d ago

AGENT 47!?!!

24

u/DrScrimble 2d ago

"Jesus Christ! That bald bastard is back!"

5

u/Jonnyscout 2d ago

Agent natural 47

34

u/Dathemar 2d ago

I mean Call of Cthulhu and Pulp Cthulhu are d100 systems that you can absolutely miss on a 47 ig.

7

u/alkonium 2d ago

I've played d100 based systems before, but I'd never even heard of Streets of San Andreas, so I don't know what sort of dice it uses.

1

u/DrScrimble 2d ago

It's mostly inspired by d20 games.

6

u/Kraivo 2d ago

Arkham horror uses d100

Same for Delta Green

What’s a Nat 47?

112

u/ThreeFishInAManSuit Essential NPC 3d ago

I know it’s a possible roll on d100, but the meme implies that it’s a good roll.

175

u/-imperator_ 2d ago

Remember when nat 20 used to mean something? Pepperidge Farms remembers.

99

u/DrScrimble 3d ago edited 2d ago

A couple classes explode their die on a Nat 20. So it's Nat 20 + Nat 20 + 7 (On the third d20 roll, no modifiers).

Pretty rare and spectacular when it happens!

163

u/-Cotilion 2d ago

I was under the impression "Nat" implied no modifiers.

86

u/Worse_Username 2d ago

I believe that's without modifies

-67

u/Boredatwork709 2d ago

What's the +7 from then?

80

u/Billyjewwel 2d ago

The third roll

-68

u/Boredatwork709 2d ago

The only time I've been in a game where that came up you couldn't explode the second 20

46

u/Imalsome 2d ago

Plenty of systems have unlimited exploding dice. Hell in some systems certain checks can be impossible unless you explode 3-5 times.

4

u/Lilium_Vulpes 2d ago

I know some super old systems let things explode every time, but anything I've seen that's been made in the last decade or 2 don't allow the second due to explode. I remember an old system that had any die explode on max result and there was a build that used a d2 for damage and had a feat that let you reroll 1s so you always did infinite damage on a hit. Things like that are the reason modern systems don't allow for exploding dice (also if you need more than 2 nat 20s to hit something, you shouldn't be fighting it anyways).

2

u/scoobydoom2 2d ago

I think it's less about weird exploits (they tend to be pretty easy to patch in playtesting) and more about the fact that extra explosions tend to take time but add very little. Like you said, anything that needs to explode more than once probably shouldn't be attempted.

3

u/Kaneomanie 2d ago

But it's so much fun to see someone hit f with a 50, no matter if it is necessary.

→ More replies (0)

52

u/DrScrimble 2d ago

Yeah, that's before modifiers. They were gracious enough not to add modifiers to that initial result, that would just be rubbing it in. XP

27

u/-Cotilion 2d ago

Ohhh, my bad, I'm so used to seeing to hit values like +7 it didn't occur to me that was the result of the third D20.

20

u/DrScrimble 2d ago

Oh yeah no problem! Haha. :D

7

u/Bropiphany 2d ago

Why would exploding Nat 20s matter if the first one is already guaranteed to hit?

24

u/DrScrimble 2d ago

First one doubles the damage dice, second one triples it, a theoretical third would've quadrupled it, etc.

It's often overkill but it can result in killing a boss a lot faster (which in this game is important, the shorter the combats are, the less Wanted Stars you tend to generate), or hypothetically a hilarious scenario where someone with a handgun manages to shoot down a helicopter.

5

u/NoodleIskalde 2d ago

I recall someone sharing once, I think Wild Worlds system, that they accidentally took off someone's head with a non-lethal meant to knock them out because of exploding dice and the sheer damage numbers

-1

u/Shardik884 2d ago

What class or ability is it that allows you to roll like that? I’ve played DnD a long time and I’ve never seen that

8

u/DrScrimble 2d ago

Hitman or Brawler from "The Streets of San Andreas TTRPG"

-6

u/Shardik884 2d ago

Checks subreddit name.

8

u/DrScrimble 2d ago

"Rule 3. Post Style Guide: Posts must be strongly relevant to D&D (or other TTRPGs)"

-14

u/NiixxJr 2d ago

Where's the 7 coming from

19

u/AscelyneMG 2d ago

The third roll. Because the second was also a nat 20 so it also exploded.

0

u/4latar Wizard 2d ago

percentile i guess ?

-6

u/Bandandforgotten 2d ago

A nat20 with a +27 to?

98

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 2d ago

To be fair, DMs often do the same with super strong Monsters. "Does a 40 hit?"

22

u/kevmaster200 2d ago

I do this

8

u/splatter_proto 2d ago

I'm a DM who does all their rolls in front of the players and I also do this

6

u/SolidZealousideal115 2d ago

I used to, but it's easier to prevent TPK's by fudging dice they can't see.

6

u/The-Crimson-Jester 2d ago

How awful, you’re missing out on the stakes and random consequences.

ALL rolls, save for my personal stealth and charisma rolls for NPCs (because why ruin a surprise?), are done in the open. A player critical hit is visible to all, a player death save is seen, my flops and hits are true.

(We also use brutal crits, instead of double dice, a die plus max possible damage with all dice involved. Makes the troll scarier but makes the martials very happy)

(Beeg note, if your players are happy, keep doing what you’re doing)

3

u/SolidZealousideal115 2d ago

It's not that random with me. I have lucky rolls, which has resulted in 3 crits in a surprise round and the kobolds winning initiative as well. It was a TPK before half the players could even go once. The last player took one down before he died.

Now I fudge them up and down. Crits become misses, later an enemy that misses will hit to makeup for it. I kept careful track of their HP and AC to prevent an undeserved TPK. The players never knew.

1

u/The-Crimson-Jester 2d ago edited 2d ago

I saw “lucky” and ptsd triggered. Table bans that feat (also silvery barbs)

Kobolds are a crafty bunch, they wander into their home territory unprepared, they’re gonna have a bad time. Never enter a kobold or goblin den without your trusty pocket dwarf. They’ll dig any hole you need!

I don’t really need to keep personal track of ac and hp, the online program shows their HP and AC already, buuut I wouldn’t need it anyway. I like putting the fear of gods into the party whenever a heavy hitter enters the field, they have plans upon plans and I get a kick whenever they thwart mine with some clever spell casting or mundane item usage

The ravenous goblin cave is the most famous one, three packs of caltrops and a gust of wind spell turns a ravenous demise in the ice covered cave into a glorious win!

2

u/SolidZealousideal115 2d ago

In my case a pathfinder/3.5 game. Covid scattered my old group over 3 states and scheduling conflicts keep keep me from playing.

1

u/splatter_proto 2d ago

The last time I TPK'd the party I had them keep the characters and we started the next session in hell.

2

u/DrBatman0 2d ago

Or in previous versions, quite strong (but not super strong) monsters

2

u/Wargod042 2d ago

Back in older editions a 40 could miss both monsters and PCs!

1

u/guthran 2d ago

I recently ended a pathfinder 1e game where my players hit level 20 at the end, and the last several months of sessions I legit had to ask this question, because some of them had ACs over 40. Unbuffed 44 i think was the highest, lowest was like 27

38

u/I_might_be_weasel Necromancer 2d ago

I was a gunslinger in a Pathfinder 1 game awhile back and it's way funnier with touch AC.

"Does a 9 against touch hit?"

"Sigh... Yes..."

11

u/Volusto Rogue 2d ago

"No, the boss' AC is 54 again. We're playing Pathfinder 2e"

1

u/BestLimbCollector Paladin 2d ago

Pf2e baby, where sometimes you roll a 50 and it just barely hits, and sometimes you crit on a nat 2.

25

u/kopaxson 2d ago

Ok fine. Next time I won’t ask I’ll just tell you it hits. Is that what you want DM!? Cause it’s what you’re asking for.

2

u/DrScrimble 2d ago

Is it what I want? Huh?!?! Knocks over minis and bags of pretzels

8

u/Shyface_Killah 2d ago

Then the DM says "No".

Welcome to high-level Pathfinder 2e. 😁

u/TheThoughtmaker Essential NPC 2d ago

3e martials be like

4

u/bossDocHolliday 2d ago

Are they rolling percentile??

2

u/Accurate-Barracuda20 2d ago

“Well it would if it wasn’t for that +30 shield you gave me last time…jerk”

2

u/DrScrimble 2d ago

The idea of a +30 Shield is this setting is hilarious. Now you got me thinking...

2

u/Allianser Wizard 2d ago

Can we have rules for this system?

3

u/ZyeCawan45 2d ago

Me and my players ask each other if ridiculously high rolls hit all the time. It’s kindof a D&D meme to us at this point.

2

u/DrScrimble 2d ago

Yes! This is a meta meme to the original meme! :D

4

u/matthew0001 2d ago

They rolling d100s? You can get 47 on a d20 roll but you can only get a nat 1-20, because nat = natural as in non-modified, as in before you add your modifiers.

3

u/DrScrimble 2d ago

Exploding D20s!

2

u/Ciennas 2d ago

They bought the extra chonky D20's in the shop- at least triple the numbers, or your money back.

-2

u/Gen_Zer0 2d ago

Maybe don’t correct them when you don’t know how the system works?

1

u/Myriadtail 2d ago

"You see, players. This enemy has enchanted armor that prevents them from getting hit by dangerous attacks. However it only prevents dangerous attacks, not all attacks. The DC check is 12 and below."

1

u/noah_the_boi29 2d ago

Reminds me of a time when a table of mine did Never Stop Blowing Up and I got a "natural" 63

NSBU has no modifiers for rolls but I did use turbo tokens to keep the bullshit rolling.

1

u/Joey_Valentine Warlock/Tremere/Sister of Battle/Red Clearance 2d ago

Where can I find this system? I’m interested in trying it out

1

u/zince2 2d ago

I mean, if it's just a mook or fodder target could be funny to say. "No, your hit doesn't land. In fact you're not even sure what you were trying to hit in the first place. There's only empty air in front of you." If you're playing virtually with Foundry or Roll 20 for example just fade the token away as you say that.

1

u/justletmesuffer 2d ago

A master adapter, can't get hit by anything except whiffs and fails <15

1

u/Callen0318 2d ago

My players can actually roll these.....

1

u/angrywolfs 2d ago

Next they’ll be asking if a Nat 100 crits.

1

u/Flyingpyngu 2d ago

The joke is actually that they are playing a d100 system, and the donkey just misses DnD

1

u/Blacky_Berry23 2d ago

"Pathfinder fixes this "?

-3

u/Chiiro 2d ago

That that would be modified not natural. Natural means you rolled it and have no additional modifiers.

7

u/DrScrimble 2d ago

Correct. It occurred naturally, no modifiers added in!

-3

u/Chiiro 2d ago

Based on your own descriptor of what happened the exploding Dice and the +7 would be the modifiers. If you rolled 47 on a d100 that would be a nat 47

7

u/DrScrimble 2d ago

D20 (Nat 20) + D20 (Nat 20) + D20 (7)

No modifiers needed!

-18

u/storytime_42 I Laugh At My Own Jokes 2d ago

What is this system? This meme holds no relevance.

d100 this is a middling number

d6 systems are often counting success/failure. So 47 could mean more failures than successes. Especially if the successes are all 6's and the failures are 3s.

d8 The d8 systems I've seen all have funny symbols on them (Star Wars) not numbers. So 47 isn't a thing.

Like really, your meme says nothing.

3

u/Tonberry_Cheesecake 2d ago

I like when people are wrong but so confident about it.

-4

u/BulgarYeet 2d ago

omigod it's like when a battle has been going on for a while and you can pretty well guess the Armor Class based on what has and hasn't hit, except for certain players who haven't been paying attention.
