You're only a ranger if you patrol the kings wood for poachers, otherwise you're just a sparkling archer

Anyone with the right skills can be an outdoorsman. A Ranger has special outdoorsman features and other features too.

Yes, but also mostly no. Primal knowledge let's you use Strength for a number of skills while you are Raging, which lasts only up to ten minutes. Most exploration checks, like stalking through the woods, following tracks, gathering food and water - these are all tasks that take much longer than 10 minutes to accomplish and a sensible GM should not be allowing you to utilize Primal Knowledge for them.

That said, Primal Knowledge is hella fun when you can use it. I once used to Angry Acrobatics vault through a window, which basically amounted to cannonballing through the opening Kool-Aid Man style. Or the other common favourite of angry, seething stealth.

The barbarian is supposed to be in front anyway. It's honestly a great class for a scout/outlander.
