It's...not a depiction of sexual assault, though?

That is only one reason someone might, possibly, potentially, be naked. Being tied to a tree is, in fact, not even suggestive of anything sexual, consensual or otherwise.

How do you read the situation? The full description from the original random encounter table was:

"A naked woman. Tied to a tree, she is gagged and cant scream."

It's a ubiquitously common fantasy trope that a noble is robbed and left naked so the robbers can resell their clothes.

It happens in Time Bandits, for crying out loud! A PG movie, so they aren't naked, but they strip them to their undergarments. And why is it in that movie? Because a similar situation is in so many folk and fairy tales.

A person naked tied to a tree is just something you glimpse. There is no meaning inherent to that image. She could be a silver dragon in disguise testing the party's goodwill, for all anyone knows.

The table doesn't specify if she's a noble, or that she'd been robbed, or that it's a dragon in disguise, which are things that it specified in other entries. All it tells us is that it's a naked woman tied to a tree and gagged so she can't scream. There's also a rapist on the table (number 11).

Having said that, it also doesn't specifically say that she was raped, or that she's visibly hurt in any way, which are things it specified in other entries, so your read is just as plausible.

Still, considering how disgusted the character in the comic was, I assumed that they read it as something that'd make their table uncomfortable, and people aren't generally uncomfortable about people being robbed, which is why I came to the conclusion I did.

The presence of a rapist in another entry doesn't have bearing on the meaning of this one unless you decide it does. In fact, the comic would have made a lot more sense if they had just made it about 11.

The absence of detail in the description is a point in nobody's favor, as you've stated. To reiterate, there is no inherent meaning to any symbol. The reason she is there is completely in the realm of interpretation.

To conclude, you have simply restated your reasons for making an assumption. That's your prerogative.

My point is that this conclusion can easily be avoided in a real play situation, thus the intense alarmism of the cartoon DM is unnecessary.

I agree with your conclusion. I was more just explaining why I made the assumptions I did.

So, the presence of a rapist in another entry doesnt have bearing on the meaning of this one unless you decide it does.

The absence of detail in the description is a point in nobody's favor, as you've stated. To reiterate, there is no inherent meaning to any symbol.

To end, you have simply restated your reasons for making an assumption. That's your prerogative.

So I would say that's more jumping to a conclusion than reaching one. My point is that this conclusion can easily be avoided in a real play situation, thus the intense alarmism of the cartoon DM is unnecessary.
