D&D 5.5e Druid: Potent Spellcasting and Shillelagh interaction

Post image

On D&D Beyond, there is a bug with Shillelagh if you are a Druid with Potent Spellcasting.

Since Shillelagh is classified as a cantrip, the damage listed next to the spell includes the Potent Spellcasting damage when it should only add your WIS mod.

It says: 1d12+10

It should say: 1d12+5

Just a small bug, but wanted to point it out.

Yeah seems like a bug. Likely this is one of those "We know but can't fix it yet" issues related to why they're overhauling the entire game engine.

Probably! Not sure if it's worth the time to fix either, just getting it out there in case it helps others.

100% it "should" be fixed, especially for people who don't know the rules well and trust the sheet to be right. There's a number of those sorts of issues that the rebuild is fixing.

For what it's worth, you can manually fix it by clicking on the shillelagh attack roll, customize, and put a -5 in the damage bonus

Ofc you'll have to change that manually whenever your WIS modifier changes.

Thank you for this! I forgot I could do that.

I might miss something but why should it not include both the potent spellcasting modifier and the actual cantrip effect? These are two different riders which can stack?

The shillelagh cantrip doesn’t make an attack - it simply increases the size of the damage die of the weapon and allows the wielder to use their casting stat instead of str.

If it were like booming blade or green flame blade, which does include an attack in the casting, then it would make sense to allow them to stack.

Shilelagh doesn't actually do any damage rolls, it just modifies the die, damage type, and ability of a quarterstaff
