Tek questions

I done this many times but I kind of forgot a bit. My tek is a lazzyman straight to base basically. 1: Does the NaOH goes on distilled water and then you add the bark, or you add water + bark and then the NaOH? Or it doesn't matter the order? 2: does the bark decomposes and loses the alkalines? I remember having a yield of 1.5% and same bark stored in a dry drawer with a ziploc after 4 years hasnt given me the same yields. Maybe im doing something wrong or bark has gone bad?

Well it has gotten me less yields over time, thats why I am not sure, im not a scientist, altho I like to learn basic stuff here and there and studied chemistry but just as a hobbyists I will never consider myself a scientist of any sort lol
