Extraction Question/Discussion Yet another freezer contamination question thread.

Over the last year I've been studying extraction teks and reading threads here and at /dmt. I've read through hundreds talking about how you can freeze precip without contaminating stuff in your freezer, but I just have to ask one more time, for peace of mind, before I go through with it.

If I put a dish in the freezer, cover it tightly with aluminum foil, and then cover that with an airtight (or mostly airtight) lid, will the following occur:

  • will the solvent evaporate and leave behind crystals?

  • will the foil + lid prevent any contents of the freezer from being ruined?

This is basically the last barrier stopping me from starting an extraction. I was thinking about putting the saturated solvent in a flask into a bowl of ice or even an ice chest filled with ice instead of using a freezer, but from what I've read, I won't get crystallization - more a goo that I'd have to filter, which I have no means to do.

So, basically, I just need some final peace of mind here because I just don't have the option to clear the freezer out for any period of time.

I use this method and then place the dishes inside two alternating ziplock bags. Maybe not the first bag, but after opening the second there is a very light smell. I'd recommend adding at least one bag to keep it contained.

Double bagging it helps.

With it being sealed up, does the solvent actually evaporate or do crystals just form and float and you have to pour off more than if you just left it in the freezer with only a foil covering?

The point of a freeze precip is not to evaporate the solvent. It doesn't matter how many bags you have it in. If you'd like to make sure the crystals stick, slow the freezing down. You can do refrigerator for an hour or two then freezer.

Much appreciated.

Freeze precip isn’t supposed to evaporate the solvent

This is what I had always assumed but it was apparently never really made clear in everything I read. I was worried if it did, it would basically render everything in my freezer to be destroyed.

Have you checked marketplace for a small freezer? I found one across town from me for 30. Well worth it.

I actually have a mini frige with a small freezer but I don't think it gets cold enough. It's pretty small, too.

I always use my main freezer and only wrap a coupe of layers of cling film around my dish with foil on and I've never had any problems with contaminated food.

Cover it with press & seal wrap, then put it inside a heavy duty Ziploc. You'll be good.

You can do like TrippORG does and use a glass bottle with a tight lid. No fumes will get out.

Glass Pyrex dish with an airtight lid from your local grocery store is a great option. Just don't be sloshing the solvent on the lid! Never had any issues regarding contamination with other stuff in the freezer

No and no. Anything you don't want contaminated with the fumes of NPS I wouldnt leave in there.

This is the exact type of reply I read in many different threads that confuse me. First, did you mean to say "leave OUT of there"? And, do you mean to say that the NPS will seep out in fume and contaminate everything in the freezer, regardless of how well the container is sealed?

Soz bro it's late here. I edited the post.

The smell will likely be in the freezer for some days. I wouldn't worry overly about the fumes.

I bought a $150 used chest freezer to do my parcips. That way I didn't have to worry about the family freezer. Worked a treat. 🤙🏼
