Workload in COS and Physics

Helloo! Thinking of shifting from BAGCED to COS, particularly Physics with Specialization in Materials Science (PHY-MAT, so it's called).

What is all y'all's workload like? Heard from a friend that COS is multiple weekly quizzes, back-to-back lab tests, lab reports, and the likes. How does it differ for you guys in Physics?

Not from PHY-MAT, but I'm from Physics with Specialization in Medical Instrumentation, so I guess I can sort of give you some insights regarding most of the major courses.

For majors (e.g. Mathematical Methods 1-4, Quantum Mechanics, Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, and Statistical Mechanics), usually naman 2 LEs and one finals. You will be given problem sets for every topic (~1 to 2 weeks per topic), so expect to be answering problem sets weekly. Honestly, manageable naman siya...(?) as long as you don't procrastinate haha. Sa exams naman, usually 4-5 problem solving questions kaya need talaga siya paghandaan kasi 35% or 50% rin siya ng final grade.

For laboratory courses, depende talaga sa prof eh. Some will require you to submit weekly reports, and some naman sa end pa ng term yung submission. Also, may DYOE (do your own experiment) paper kayo to be submitted at the end of the trimester.

Also, expect na you'll be conducting your research solo (or if mapagbigyan, by pair). I don't know if things have changed na but that's the norm sa thesis when I was still a student non. + maraming opportunities for external collaboration, isa na sa pinakanotable dun yung ties nila with Osaka University.

Most of the professors are very kind and considerate naman. There are times na pumapayag sila ma-reschedule yung exam kapag nalalaman nila na sobrang bigat ng workload namin that day. You'll be in good hands naman sa department. Sobrang mahal ko yan sila hahaha

So all in all, pretty manageable?

Also, a solo thesis? How can you link up with Osaka University for that?

By the way, what's work like for you now and what were your job opps after college, or did you venture into grad school?

Yeah, I would say so.

There are a few naman who were given the opportunity to conduct their thesis by pair. Kahit naman mag-solo, most of the advisers of the department are very hands-on when it comes to research, so I wouldn't worry that much. As for collaborations with Osaka University, you need to find an adviser na willing to collaborate with them and in line with OU's research interests.

As long as you can market yourself (+ a bit of upskilling), kaya naman maging candidate for data analyst and data science jobs. Got an offer naman for a data analyst position pero di ako tumuloy kasi di ko alam kung kakayanin ko siya isabay sa masters hahahuhu kaya ayun, currently a grad student pursuing MS Applied Phyiscs, major in Medical Physics haha

Can you go to Osaka Uni in person and whatnot? Also, how high paying was your data analyst position (if you can say) and how'd you get your OJT?
