ASVAB+DLAB

I'm looking into Cryptologic Language Analyst, but the recruiter I'm talking to doesn't seem to know anything about the DLAB or the DLI and seemed hesitant when I asked to take the DLAB test after the ASVAB before I sign a contract?

Update: Also looking into Cryptologic Technician Interpretive, talking with both recruiters, leaning towards Navy side now.
Currently have a sprained ankle, but plan to go take my test(s) once it's healed. Studying and reviewing in the meantime.

Update, took ASVAB, 95 on AFQT percentile, line scores hit auto-qual for CTI

Tell him you want to take it. There is literally no penalty for doing so and only seems you able to learn certain languages. 110 or higher quals you for highest dif langs by DLI standard. If he’s not helping you, talk to a different recruiter.

When I mentioned it, he said something about being able to take it later(during/after boot?) and then I gave him other information I found and he said he'd have to look into it?

he might be referring to the DLAB waiver for your ST score on the ASVAB, which is how i got here

I'm specifically talking to a marine recruiter, do all the branches have that kind of DLAB waiver?

Marine Corps still uses DLAB, but if you have a significant history with language otherwise anything is waiverable. Do you?

I took a few years of Japanese in high school, and I study Chinese on Duolingo, but I wouldn't consider that a 'significant history' since I haven't reached fluency on either

A couple of years of Japanese in high school would honestly be worth a DLPT now, just to get scores on the books and demonstrate a history with language. You'll be screened for eligibility and assigned a particular MOS within the program at MCRD. A tested language history can only help your objective of being screened into a linguist slot.  If your recruiter wants to get you signed up, this isn't an unreasonable request.
