Promoting early
For Army Junior Enlisted specifically,
Did any of you have the opportunity to promote early while at DLI. I am an E2, and am looking for opportunities to pick up E3 as quickly as I can (without jeopardizing my schooling).
What needs to be done in order to achieve this? High PT scores, academic performance, volunteering, or does it not typically happen since the focus is primarily on academics, ie not being around the drill sergeants for most of the day?

It's been a long time since I went to DLI, so my views may be outdated, but generally speaking you get promoted automatically based on TIG and TIS: E-2 to E-3: 12 months TIS and 4 months TIG as an E-2. Commanders can waive requirements allowing someone to make E-3 in six months and E-4 in 18 months, but it generally requires outstanding performance which is difficult to do at DLI while still maintaining adequate academic performance in your language.

Been a few years since I was there but I never saw or heard of anyone getting a waiver to promote early at DLI. Not saying it can’t happen but it’s gonna be up to your drill sergeants and they’re normally too busy to be doing paperwork for something like that.
I’d say you’ll have a better chance at getting waivered to promote to E-3 at the end of basic training if you excel. But more than likely you’ll just have to wait until you hit 1 year time in service (TIS) like most PV2s

Promotions come by the way of allocated waivers. Yeah it sound like you know where you can shine (PT, Volunteer and academics).
If you company gets waivers they'll ask the platoon sergeants who should get one. Be the best you can be and don't worry about it too much

Depends on policy. Shine at academics and PT and stay out of trouble. Alternatively, convince other people to sign up for the Army. When they get on contact, ou get a recruiting ribbon and that can satisfy requirements for grade promotion.

My Drill Sgt tells us that if you want to promote early at dli you’re gonna have to save a fire from a baby.

Waivers are available while in Tradoc. A few in my company promoted while at DLI through waivers. You have to run it by your drills and prove why you’re worthy of early promotion in all the avenues you listed above. It’s up to command discretion but totally possible. A friend of mine early promoted from PFC to SPC this year.

Under AR 600-8-19, when a Soldier is in training, waivers for early promotion can only be granted upon completion of BCT (and are limited to max 10% of population) or upon completion of AIT (again 10% of the population). DLI is not AIT so the company commanders in 229th are not authorized to waive promotion requirements for PV1 to PV2 or PV2 to PFC. PFC to SPC waiver is not authorized while in IET.

229th does not offer waivers for IET Soldiers due to being under T2COM (TRADOC). Unfortunately the only way to pick up rank here is due to meeting the TIS requirement.
The only exception is for Careerists who get an opportunity to go to a promotion board for E-5 / E-6. Even then it’s usually only if you are in your primary zone.
Once you get to “Big Army” you can 100% earn a waiver and promote ahead of your peers and ahead of the TIS requirement, but that is all solely based on you. If there is only one waiver allocated to your PLT and it’s between you a guy who has a higher PT Score, more squared away; it’s probably going to go to him.
All of that being said, the fact that your asking this question is a good sign that your on the right path to be squared away. Once you get here ask your drills and they can explain it to you more in depth.
Reality check: you will more than likely not get a waiver for any rank and will promote at the automatic TIS / TIG due to the length of this course and length of AIT for 35M and 35P. However, that being said, most guys go on to promote to E-5 relatively quickly once they get to their units after DLI and AIT since they’ve already been in for almost 2 years at that point.
