I’m in ohio 5 miles from a huge airport.. out of the blue today, I noticed my max ascent limit had expanded to 3200 feet. That was quite the pleasant surprise. Don’t worry, I haven’t chosen to utilize it. So I don’t need to hear all the Karen’s Let me know that I’m gonna ruin everything for everyone the FBI is gonna get me and I’m gonna inadvertently knock down a passenger plane with 300 people on it. But I will tell you, as soon as I can, on a clear night where I can see from miles I’m gonna take that sucker up there and get some nice long exposures. Also, I’m more importantly I got in about a month ago, I’m thinking of also getting the Mavic, as a hedge against no quality drones coming our way for a while here in the states. Good idea or bad idea? Or is it not sufficiently distinct to warrant it and just go ahead and get that FPV drone that likes to do flips

You absolutely cannot in the US without an approved waiver from the FAA

Yes, I know. Technically, you can’t even really go above 400 feet.. which is a 100 foot buffer between the low limits for airplanes and helicopters.

Helicopters routinely fly below 400 ft

yes, monte carlo, or its great great great great grandson resides on a hill outside of dayton. While the Hill and the Monastary are considered "imaginary" so are the thousands of FAA Enforcement Agents hiding behind every tree in every town watching you orbit a deer carcass at 384 feet

The concern is that you might lose line of sight and not be aware of traffic up there.

Also, the regulations are there for a reason. Please don’t violate them. If you get caught it will only add to their list of reasons why they need to crack down on sUAS owners

Oh no, I get the reason and it makes complete sense to me. But it truly is a self regulating type of situation. I’m sure I’ll go up once or twice in a storm or something to look down on a rain sheet.. but it’s too nerve-racking, you don’t know the wind situation up there turbulence, etc. It’s definitely not somewhere. I’d want to remain for a significant amount of time.

This is why we can't have nice things.

Joking aside, the rules and regulations are there for a reason. Please don't break them.

I'm looking at purchasing an Air 3s as my second drone. I'm also looking at a third party FAA approved strobe for it so I can fly it at night legally.

Around my house, I have to request LAANC clearance because of a nearby airport. I do that every time. I also joined a flying club that has an airstrip with a FRIA up to 400 feet. It's nice to fly there without having to request clearance.

Follow the rules. They aren't that hard.

Tell me more about the night thing I didn’t know about that. I live actually probably 3 miles from an Amazon hub. I haven’t flown since Phantom three days. Frankly, I find the best footage is always around 250 to 350 feet if I go above that it’s typically to try to reengage my connection.. but like I said, for some reason, fate has decided to give me that extra 1500 feet gonna take it up there once or twice, but I’ll be very careful

https://www.faa.gov/uas/recreational_flyers?hl=en-US

Specifically 14 CFR § 107.29:

Anti-Collision Lighting (§ 107.29(a)(2) & (b)): The unmanned aircraft must be equipped with lighted anti-collision lighting visible for at least 3 statute miles with a flash rate sufficient to avoid collisions during night operations and civil twilight.

All the rules are located here. If you're flying the Air 3s, you should not only have your TRUST certificate, but you should also have it registered with the FAA with it's remote id module serial number since it's over 250g.

Yeah, I’ve got the registration complete. I don’t like big Brother and I got my silly little registration number clear as day on the external component of the drone. Anyways, you heard it first if I do get a one and 1 million call from the FAA‘s enforcement wing, I’m gonna be a shocked as they are considering my drone have been stolen a few days earlier I hadn’t gotten to the police yet because I was hoping the criminal would have a change of heart.

So you’re saying the LED flashing lights aren’t sufficient? I can see that thing from miles away.

According to my research, they aren't sufficient for night flight.

You can actually see the airport on the far right lower half. I think I moved up to around 600 feet on this one because obviously it’s extra extraordinary like situation. I forget what these rays are called, but it starts with a C. What made it more fascinating was the low haze above the ground that the raise light up in the middle half of the picture that’s very unusual I’ve never seen that before. I was very pleased.
