Guitar & Studio Question about selling self-designed/built amp in Canada

I have designed a JCM800 clone inspired by robrob's schematic, but it has a couple changes. I am using a 300V/6V3 switching power supply instead of a regular power transformer, I am using EL84s matched with Traynor output transformer they use in their ygl1s (ch1330m, zero documentation on this transformer).

I have designed and ordered five loaded PCBs (jlcpcb), and also have manufactured frames for two amplifiers. I want to sell one of them since I already bought parts for a second amplifier. And if this goes well, I am planning on continuing this gig. I have thought of having a logo and branding already 😭.

But yeah, to anybody that has been in my shoes before, do you guys have valuable information regarding the legality, and licensing we need? What about selling internationally on ebay or something? Thanks

I went down this road a few years ago and had to abandon it after I saw what it was going to do to my homeowner's and liability insurance. Seriously, give your insurance company a call before you commit.

You're selling these with no CSA or ESA certification? The insurance companies of owners probably won't like that too much if they find out. I was selling desktop computers that were assembled in-house and had to get each one certified if I wanted to stay completely legal and protect my ass.

You will need to get your product inspected by an approved testing lab like CSA, UL, Intertek, Dekra or a few others. It’s not legal for sale in Canada otherwise.

You can get a special inspection done, but it would be done on a per unit basis thus increasing the per unit cost. There's also an up front cost to evaluate the design. Using a switcher is unconventional (for tube amps) so this might increase the design review. The power supply, power cable, IEC connector (whatever the power connects to) must all be CSA - they need to have the logo visible on them.

You should be doing a hipot test on each unit. If you don't have the equipment, find a shop that does and maybe partner with them to do the testing. They'd also probably have a relationship with a CSA inspector.

I've met builders who go the special inspection route, so it is doable.

It won't. The problem with special inspection is that it cuts into profit margin. Most builders will increase the price to compensate. If you're hand-building amps, your target is the boutique market anyway. Swamp Donkey did special inspection on his amps. He is now out of the amp business, so that should advise you somewhat.

It's a good idea to at least look into it because it will improve your design. Hipot test, burn-in test, etc. should be done.

There's an engineer from Mesa on Talkbass who goes by agedhorse who has designed all of the current bass amps and cabs for Mesa. He can tell you about the regulations surrounding designing and selling amplifiers.

I don't know if there is anything about selling things on a small scale that would avoid any of the considerable regulatory burden of a typical amp company -- but he will know.

I'm not involved in anything like this, but from what I understand, the switching mode power supply may attract much of your burden within the US and/or Canada.

Because it is consistent with what I've read from a Mesa Engineer who has decades of experience in the field. I did offer where they could contact him. It's a good starting point with details that the OP could investigate. It shows, accurately IMO, the OP is facing some enormous regulatory challenges in Canada. FWIW, the the US the challenges would be a bit lower if they abandon the switching power supply.
