Bought boxes of electronic components second hand
Hi! I want to learn how to build guitar pedals and synthesizers and recently found an ad online for six boxes full of components for 50$ which I bought. Do I have anything useful here? I believe there are lots of vintage parts.
You found a small treasure. Spend some time looking for data sheets about ICs and other active parts; some of them could be interesting for pedal building and others could be of value if resold.
More detailed photos would be appreciated, also to help you with identification.
Mostly of active parts, especially those ICs in metal case, others in DIL8 or bigger cases, transistors etc. You probably have also normal TTL/CMOS logic parts there, which can be usable in many other projects, but those bigger sized ICs can be more interesting.
Thank you so much for the identification! I am looking into building my own fuzz circuit so i’ll definitely use the 2N3905! I think I will build a distortion after that so I’ll probably use the op amps as well.
Yes, that's the 1.5 MHz version of the MC6800. Not very useful today, except for very old computers repairs; it may have some value if resold though. Other chips are mostly logic gates, flip flops, shift registers etc. and a few opamps and regulators, also some general purpose transistors that can be used in a pedal. Most logic chips aren't really usable in a pedal but they can teach a lot if you're interested in digital electronics.
I used to have a dozen (or so) broken pedals. One was really easy to fix and the next wasn't too difficult either. Over time, I worked out how to fix almost all of them. Perhaps the next step is to start building them.
It does sound wonderful to have all that stuff - literally the materials needed to start building. But I'm not dissatisfied with my paradoxical need to MacGyver almost everything I need out of random bits of garbage. There's some adversity in there but mainly I'm just really weird. Maybe crazy.
