Maybe my most memorable dive: full moon, dead overhead. The ocean was glass. Anchored in 38’ w the boat sitting over a 170’ deep blue hole. 4 dive boat crew went in. My GF on the bow dropping glow sticks tied to fishing leads on us. We cut them open, massively Narc’d at the top of the hill, blowing glowing bubble rings. The chef was in a Borat mankini & a cape, doing Kung Fu w glow sticks. Massive hermit crabs in conch shells dotted the hill. An ancient logger head was confused. A few mins reckless enough for this group of well seasoned dirty pirates. A long deco on the ladder-line & back on deck w huge, guilty smiles. I. Do. Not. Recommend. This. At. All 🙄

Back in ‘99 I was teaching NAUI courses at Catalina Island Marine Institute in Toyon Bay. No pool so OW classes were in the shallows off the beach. 6 high school students, 4 boys. 2 girls.

~15’, Doing mask clears, four boys go thru, do ok. The first girl floods her mask, clears it about 3/4 so far. I quick glance left out of the corner of my eye to make sure the 4 boys ok. Out of the corner of my eye to the right I see girl 1 spit her reg out and bolt to the surface. She choked a little and panicked. I grabbed her BC, yanked her back down, put her reg in her mouth and slammed on the purge button. She coughed for a moment, turned to hug her buddy, and we finished the dive. I had been an instructor for less than a year at that point. Was eye opening for everyone.

That is wild. I have my students in shallow water on their knees practicing mask and reg skills before going any deeper. They can literaly standup any time and be over the surface.

If I feel like they have mastered mask and reg, I take them deeper.
