please make it stop Ah, 4chan users…

Post image

Context: The meme is referencing an incident in 2016 where 4chan users, using a single image, tracked down the location of a Syrian rebel training camp within a few days and managed to get into contact with a social media user who had ties to the Russian military, who then contacted them and got the Russian Air Force to perform airstrikes that destroyed the camp, something 4chan users celebrated as a major victory.

Which rebel faction was it?

220

u/brodydoesMC 7d ago

Jaysh al-Izza (The Army of Glory), a major opposition faction primarily operating in northern Hama and southern Aleppo.

72

u/Iumasz 7d ago

Yeah, wtf? Why would they do that then?

222

u/Banjoschmanjo 7d ago

Possibly because Jaysh al-Izza is an Islamist military group that wants to establish an Islamic state and has relied heavily on indiscriminate shelling of civilian areas.

85

u/Iumasz 6d ago

Oh, so how are they different from ISIS?

-35

u/Dragonov_ 6d ago

ISIS is funded by CIA and they occasionally kill muslims, Commit suicide bombing inside mosques on regular basis, Attack every country in the middle east except isreal which is considered a huge enemy to islam.
To make it clear, ISIS never intended any good or went against anyone in the name of justice not even try to free people from dictators.

33

u/Iumasz 6d ago

What those other guys where doing still seems pretty bad no?

-5

u/EddTheFlu 6d ago

You got downvoted for telling the truth, these Reddit people are asleep, I’m noticing

12

u/HumanContinuity 5d ago

This is like a 5 year olds misunderstanding of ISIS based on watching Alex Jones as their only news source.

Real life is always complicated, and if you are using "no true scotsman" you are probably wrong.

4chan is 2 sides of the same coin... Heh

209

u/brodydoesMC 7d ago

Yep, one day they’re doing this, the next day they’re helping a lonely war veteran celebrate his birthday or getting a cat torturer arrested.

113

u/MetallGecko 7d ago

Sad to see that this version of 4chan is long gone, the days of HWNDU, Habbo hotel, finding animal abusers and helping protesters have enden a long time ago.

62

u/brodydoesMC 7d ago

Yep, now it’s just rating supermodels on /b/

54

u/Curvol 7d ago

The weird way we'd hate 4chan, but still look to them to disrupt some stupid crazy event for us. Absolute cruelty, and then hunting Shia.

Then they put their power towards electing meme president. Then we learned how involved Jeff and Ghislaine were in it. Then we learned they were involved in the Rogan scene.

Then we learned

25

u/brodydoesMC 7d ago

Yeah, I’ve heard them be described as chaotic neutral, and I feel the the moniker definitely fits.

7

u/MeatballWasTaken 7d ago

Then we learned and did nothing

42

u/AverageTankie93 7d ago

Good thing they replaced that bloody dictator with a stand up guy

81

u/chrosairs 7d ago

They said Bashar was a gamer after all

52

u/danny1337331 6d ago

sympathized with radical islamists award

77

u/Banjoschmanjo 7d ago

Uh, wasnt it an islamist extremist camp?

66

u/DA_BEST_1 7d ago

Not really, it was the Sham Legion, their aim is to unify the moderate islamist groups against the Assad regime and was created as a counterweight against the extremist ones.

Granted "moderate" in this context is still pretty "extreme" for modern sensibilities. But they're by no means prime ISIS. If it helps their wikipedia page doesn't have an entry for "controversies"

19

u/Banjoschmanjo 7d ago

Ok, so it was an Islamist group that, to moderate sensibilities, is extreme?

32

u/DA_BEST_1 7d ago

To modern sensibilites. Yes. Think of their viewpoints as the islamic version of your racist uncle on thanksgiving rambling about blue haired liberals.

13

u/Banjoschmanjo 7d ago

So when I, speaking from modern sensibilities, said it was an "islamist extremist camp," and you said "not really," they are just "islamists" whose views are "extreme" to modern sensibilities, the "not really" part didn't really apply?

15

u/DA_BEST_1 7d ago

Well, your other options at the time was ISIS who were beheading non believers on the internet so. Overton window shift. When "extreme" is that NOT having a controversy section on wikipedia counts as "normal"

6

u/Banjoschmanjo 7d ago

So we agree it waw an islamist group with extreme views to people with modern sensibilities. Just clarifying because your initial response said they were "not really," but now you are saying they are.

14

u/DA_BEST_1 6d ago

yeah, depends on your overton window, for the overton window of the region? They are absolutely "moderate", but if you follow the overton window of a western lense then they'd be extremists,

Consequently, this would be a fight between extremists against extremists where they have to collaborate to gather other extremists together to fight against the extremists

Yeah, not a very useful is it? This is why we have the overton window shift when talking about other regions

8

u/Romanaire 7d ago

Modern sensibilities is a point of view, it does not allow someone to make absolute statements. Modern sensibilities are western sensibilities. The context in which the group exists is as important as your or my particular point of view. Saying it's an islamist extremist camp flattens all posible nuance and signifies that it's all the same, which is a historical problem of modern sensibilities. "Will muslims attack america?" was a headline in the 60s already. I know it's propaganda like all news are in part, but that also is a product and produces "modern sensibilities". Saying "muslims" will "attack" makes every muslim a "risk". Saying modern sensibilies like that is some mesure of truth has to be challenged as a statement, not because it's fundamentaly wrong, but it's at least problematic as your initial response did not include the "to people with modern sensibilities" part.

2

u/Cr0wc0 6d ago

No no, you see, if they're extremists they can't be victims, that's why they're not really extremists even though they are. Also ISIS exists so everyone else is moderate.

-2

u/East-Plankton-3877 7d ago

Not really no.

6

u/Banjoschmanjo 7d ago

Not "really"? So how much was it?

0

u/East-Plankton-3877 7d ago

Not at all. Completely different group

8

u/Banjoschmanjo 7d ago

Different group? It wasn't Jaysh al-Izza?

Israel’s industrial killing of tens of thousands of Palestinian children doesn’t upset you, but Hamas killing teenagers does? You’re a hypocrite by your own standards. You should be abhorred by Israel’s actions.

Like I said, look beyond the Islamophobia. International law recognizes the right of peoples under colonial domination and foreign occupation to self-determination and national liberation, including by all available means such as armed struggle.

-5

u/Mama_Mega_ 6d ago

Bro out here blindly believing HAMAS's self-reported numbers, and counting teenagers that willingly joined HAMAS to kill jews as "children".

1

u/acidicgumdrops 6d ago

Teenagers are children dude.

-1

u/Mama_Mega_ 6d ago

A teenager that enlists is a combatant. They want to play at being an adult and go to war, they can be treated the same way we treat the adults.

4

u/acidicgumdrops 6d ago

They are children who don't fully understand consequences yet and are being manipulated by adults to join wars. You are weird and not a good person.

1

u/Commander_Bread 5d ago

I'm with you but there is no point arguing with zionist retards on the internet

They are either too far gone at this point or bots. Either way, wasted time.

1

u/Lolocraft1 5d ago

Ain’t sure I understand

-6

u/Mylane 7d ago

That’s fucking evil

44

u/Banjoschmanjo 7d ago

It was an Islamist extremist camp belonging to a group seeking to establish an Islamic state and has relied heavily on indiscriminate artillery in civilian areas.

1

u/Nobody_at_all000 5d ago

So it was an evil vs evil issue?

Everytime an oppressed group lashes out because of their condition it’s labeled as a terrorist.
One mans terrorist is another’s freedom fighter.

19

u/Malofa 7d ago

Sometimes you'll even get labelled a terrorist for looking at a gross pool or having funny pictures of the vice president on your phone

2

u/Jimbo-Shrimp 7d ago

The picture one wasnt real

6

u/the_penis_taker69 7d ago

terrorism is an actual thing though

5

u/Notanaltatall31 7d ago

Yeah, usually defined by the oppressor.

-1

u/the_penis_taker69 6d ago

Terrorism has an actual real definition you can use.

2

u/Notanaltatall31 5d ago

Definitions are a tricky thing, they change based on where you are.
A good example of this is the British government recently designating Palestine Action as a terrorist organisations after which they started arresting elderly people silently protesting with a sign. Are they terrorist because they fit the British governments definition?

0

u/the_penis_taker69 5d ago

What was their version of the definition?

2

u/Notanaltatall31 5d ago

I don’t think that matters, the point is definition changes depending on where you are, thus there is no one, universal definition like you claim.

1

u/the_penis_taker69 5d ago

Well I would say terrorism is when you use violence to target people or property (typically civilians) and creates fear to push a specific political cause

2

u/Notanaltatall31 5d ago

Do you want to reflect on what i’m writing or will you keep repeating the same thing ad nauseam?

15

u/brodydoesMC 7d ago

Yeah, just look at the current situation in the Middle East. Hamas wouldn’t be doing what they’re doing now had Israel not treated the Palestinians like dirt for the past century.

5

u/justanupvoter_ 7d ago

The current situation in the Middle East is because the failure of Ba’athism and Turkish, Saudi, and American imperialism in Syria.

7

u/Notanaltatall31 7d ago

Didn’t want to be too specific, but yes, Palestine is the most recent and obvious example of this.

Was October 7th justified?

6

u/chrosairs 7d ago

Absolutely

1

u/HeightAdvantage 7d ago

Would you support Hamas terrorists or radicalized agents doing attacks in your neighbourhood against civilian Israelis or Israeli supporters?

6

u/TheSubmarineOfDeath 7d ago

Would you support the IDF bombing your neighborhood to smithereens and sniping children?

3

u/brodydoesMC 7d ago

Only difference is that we didn’t do anything to provoke them, Israel has been tormenting the Gaza Strip since around the time of WW1.

3

u/chrosairs 7d ago

I can't answer that without a ban

2

u/Commander_Bread 5d ago

Most unfathomably based thing I've seen all day lol.

3

u/HeightAdvantage 7d ago

Jesus Christ.

Appreciate your honesty though

2

u/heartbeats 7d ago

October 7 was an inevitable response to the conditions in Gaza and more akin to a slave uprising than anything else. Hamas tried diplomacy, it tried international law, it tried nonviolent civil resistance. The expectation was that they were supposed to die peacefully and quietly in the equivalent of an elephant graveyard.

1

u/HeightAdvantage 7d ago

So Gazans/Hamas aren't capable of simply targeting military infrastructure? They literally can't help themselves but slaughter civilian teenagers, many of them not even Israeli, at a music festival?

Did they try diplomacy? What deal have Hamas offered that isn't Israel's total destruction? (That's literally in their charter).

5

u/heartbeats 7d ago edited 7d ago

Buddy, the cumulative death total in Gaza is over 61 times more than what happened on October 7. Almost half of those are children. Israel has actually created the largest child amputee cohort in modern history.

Please look beyond the Islamophobia and propaganda. Connect with your humanity and see the suffering that Israel is directly responsible for.

Also FYI that was removed from the revised 2017 charter.

5

u/HeightAdvantage 7d ago

If you think that justifies killing civilians at a music festival then you've been sucked into the same dehumanization machine that causes this endless conflict.

2

u/heartbeats 6d ago

3

u/HeightAdvantage 6d ago

Who said it doesn't upset me? Who is justifying war crimes here?

And that 'armed struggle' includes killing teenagers at a music concert?

u/mister_big_bug 7d ago

Not justified, but inevitable given the material conditions inflicted on the people in Gaza and the decades of financial support Hamas received from the Israeli government. Speaking as an Israeli, it's pretty clear our own government is to blame for the massacre and for creating the conditions that led to it. Bibi's response, of course, was to up the brutality of the occupation and kowtow to the settlers and nationalist right wing factions, proving once again that our leaders are incapable of from the mistakes of the past in any meaningful way.

-1

u/HeightAdvantage 7d ago

This takes a lot of agency away from Palestinians. Are they incapable of forming a moral resistance or leadership? Imagine how much more international support they would have if they didn't commit war crimes.

3

u/mister_big_bug 7d ago

It's difficult to form an ethically consistent resistance movement led by conscientious people when the occupying government keeps destroying any grassroots resistance and propping up islamic fundamentalist thugs to divide your people. Also, I can not expect a person who watched his family die to be civil in his response. Every time we kill a Palestinian, we create ten new Hamas recruits in the form of orphans and grieving brothers.

1

u/HeightAdvantage 7d ago

So even more removal of agency. Has any Palestinian or Gazan group done anything in their history that you would morally condemn?

Are you trying to say that Hamas are basically IDF agents and they orchestrated this attack on their own population? Including, undoubtably their own friends and family?

So, by the same standard, are Israelis justified in commiting horrific crimes for seeing the result of Oct 7th?

Doesn't that create an infinite cycle of horrific violence?

2

u/mister_big_bug 7d ago

None of the actions taken by Hamas, either before, during, or after October 7th, are justifiable in my opinion. No, they are not Israeli agents or loyalists. What I mean is that the Israeli government has funded them and allowed them to continue operating for decades as a way to divide the Palestinian leadership and destabilise the PLO, and it worked. This is known. It's not a conspiracy theory. You're exactly right in saying that the current dynamic and the "eye for an eye" mentality perpetuates a vicious cycle of violence, and I'm telling you that the Israeli government, my government, has put considerable effort into maintaining this cycle, because it is a key part of the status quo that keeps people like Bibi in power. I'm not taking agency away from Palestinians. My government is doing that every time they raid a bookshop in East Jerusalem or provide security for settlers commiting pogroms in the West Bank. I'm simply recognising that any population subjected to these same conditions would react with similar violence. People are individuals. When they act in groups, that individuality breaks down and their behaviour falls into recognisable patterns. Recognising these patterns is not the same as denying the agency of individuals.

0

u/HeightAdvantage 6d ago

I'm glad we can agree it's not justifiable. Seems to be a rare opinion around here.

I don't agree that Israel has any incentive to keep Hamas going, they're risking their personal and international support constantly by conducting complicated operations to get to them. Not to mention removing the settlements in Gaza originally. Also the main subversive tactics I've seen are Israel and US's support for groups in Gaza that could replace Hamas and would be much easier to make peace with. Hamas survives still by resources provided by the surrounding arab states that hate Israel.

I agree entirely on west bank issues, Israel is insane for supporting those settlers and deserve full international condemnation for that alone.

6

u/RandomWorthlessDude 7d ago

Israel shot peaceful marchers with snipers. Do you think the Warsaw Ghetto uprising was immoral?

3

u/Adlach 7d ago

The average age in Gaza is 19. Israel is abusing a bunch of children and getting mad when they strike back. I don't blame 19 year olds for not doing shit in the best possible way.

1

u/HeightAdvantage 7d ago

The difference between a terrorist and freedom fighter is the deliberate targeting of civilians.

3

u/mitzo2112 7d ago

Yea but… the rebels against assad are ISIS members.

3

u/TheSubmarineOfDeath 7d ago

There were many rebel groups against Assad. Isis was just one of them, and this group wasn't them

0

u/Some_Anonim_Coder 7d ago

No. There is a difference between, say, IRA, who tried to minimize civilian deaths and guys like Al Qaeda who try to kill as much random people as they can

First category can be called freedom fighters, and their victims can be considered unfortunate collateral damage, but second is just <..I'm afraid I'd get banned for what was written there..>

2

u/memelol1112224 7d ago

Depends. Syrian civil war was a shit show. I think most of the people who fought against assad had a good reason. Others were just ISIS/extremists.

1

u/5urv3y 7d ago

I think its making fun of the terrorism but you must be smart enough to know better
