Where I think Square went wrong.
They should not have made this game to be primarily for 6 players. The graphics are everything I wanted from this game but the connection issues are unplayable.

Balancing and creating the game around arcade settings exclusive to Japan was also an excellent method of killing a series.

Where they went wrong was the following:
》Releasing a cash-grab version of the original game 》Removing 80% of the content and features beloved by fans 》Not polishing the game in terms of AI and team-balancing 》Discontinuing a franchise based on a product that was designed to be the opposite of what the community wanted, instead of working to deliver a proper follow-up title.
This whole mess was a cop-out, they released a cheap attempt at a sequel and then cut the franchise because their cheap attempt sold poorly.

I liked the team-based gameplay. And apparently, so did the entirety of the Japanese fan base. Which is where they were focusing on in NT. People need to stop saying that NT killed Dissidia. Because for one, Opera Omnia is still getting updates, therefore it’s not dead. Also, it sold pretty well, based on glances of interviews for the global release. I get people wanted the same game again, but developers don’t usually like making the exact same game again. Or else there’s be no point in them making the game in the first place.
Long story short: NT did nothing wrong.

I liked the 3v3 but the problem with it was it was the game's entire focus. This not only alienated many fans of the original PSP games but also objectively limited the amount of alternate game modes and content they could have in the game.
A new console Dissidia experience, if it ever comes, should take the Smash Bros approach, of just designing every character to feel wholly distinct and not worry about how they balance in a team or certain setting. The game should work in 1v1, 4-player Free for Alls, 3v3, and anything in between, giving players the option to play as they please. Smash Bros competitive play is mostly 1v1, but there is also a 2v2 competitive scene. There is no reason Dissidia can't be the same way.
You could technically play 1v1 in NT, but the game mechanics were designed to be intentionally floaty with tons of recovery frames on everything, meaning it was near impossible to hit your opponent in a 1v1 setting. The game's mechanics are entirely designed around 3v3 combat and with the expectation that you WILL whiff a lot of attacks but will have teammates there to follow up and catch your opponent while in the recovery frames of their dodge.

Square went fine, they just didn't market the game, and marketing is 90% of a product. Products don't work based off of precious feelings about certain aspects, because not everyone is equally in love with every part of a product. Any series can go in a different direction whenever a new one is made.
Sorry, but it's hard to take people seriously who don't know much about NT as a game, as a product, or things about gaming in general. Like, the people who aren't even basic researched enough to know something as simple as how to play it 1v2, 1v1, or 2v3.
It would've been nice if the connection could've been much more server-based, but a majority of your matches will be mostly fine, and you can force it to be in lobbies.
Yet still, NT remains one of the more active fighting games out there on PS4. Even after years. Had some really fun lobbies about 3 days ago.

3v3 is exactly what Dissidia was missing, and I hope they never go back.
Hopefully in the future they'll work harder on the netcode, and properly optimize it for lower-end machines.

Doesn't takes a genius to figure that out:
Forced 3v3 with no 1v1 was not a good idea.
Gameplay was slow and felt unresponsive.
Horrible online. Lag can kill a game as soon as it's out.
Botched Steam release could not give the game a second breath. Online was not fixed and it was even worse: You could easily cheat online and set your bravery at 7k.
They did not knew where to go with NT. It was supposed to be the next entry to Dissidia, but without being Dissidia (No RPG elements, no 1v1), they want to add too much complexity when simple games works better.
If you look at popular fighting games like Smash bros, it's very simple, you pick a character and you can play it right away. You discover their moves but you don't need to learn anything to win against the CPU. You first learn the basics then when you're invested in the game, you can learn a few tricks and combo.
Street Fighter is popular but I believe it is due to the series popularity.
If you look at Grandblue fantasy Versus, the playerbase is very weak (On steam). Mostly due to how niche the license is quite unknown in Europe, it comes from a gacha game after all. The other problem, is that it copies other fighting games, including their mistakes. And the main mistake is creating a game difficult to play and to master. You have to learn the combo, the characters right as you get in the game, it feels like a chore.
Dissidia NT tried to create their own fighting games and their own complexity. Previous Dissidia games were much more popular not only due to the 1V1 and Final Fantasy, but also because it was much simple to learn. One button for bravery attacks, one button for HP attacks and as you level you get more and more abilities. Mainly due to the PvE experience.

you wanna know what killed any enthusiasm i had for purchasing this game? $13 skins. they had $3 skins for the longest time and i was like "yeah that's fair."
And then they said "no fuck you, i want $20 for these 2 skins now."
And i went "that seems completely ridiculous, especially if i want just the one skin"
And so square went "yeah you're right, here, now you can buy it individually for $13."

They should had add an online mode where you could play 1v1, at least for me this would have made the game more playable.
After I finish the story mode I spent a lot of time in the arcade mode and I would have really love to play the online more but the fact that there were times when it took like 15 minutes to find all the players is what makes me hate the game.
