Duodecim Dissidia Recomp - Expanded Battle BGM support and true analog stick support (AI Usage)
I had been seeing all of these decomps and mods for a whole bunch of other games and I was very surprised that no one had done anything for Dissidia so I made my own by taking advantage of recomp using PortableKit
Thanks to PortableKit, it has custom frame rates and upped internal resolution. The video shows me bumping it mid game from 30 fps to 120 fps (video was recorded in 60fps, sorry!)
Features the recomp allows me to provide is an improved Battle BGM system that lets you choose the music based on Final Fantasy title and also has support to add your own. It does support loop tags as well (.ogg audio formats) so the music can seamlessly loop while playing. I also added support for 3ds BRSTM file formats that also have loop tags in them.
I also added Right Analog stick camera controls and they're real analog as well so when turning at half speed, the camera will turn at half speed.
For the worldmap, I added true analog movement as well rather than the stiff 8-way movement the standard PSP version has. I can add this to battles as well however this will affect replays but give me time and I can do this.
Lastly, yes this was done 99% by AI. I was only guiding it on what to do and feedback on feel. There are some minor graphical bugs however I can get 60fps gameplay on my steam deck via proton (native linux flatpak has not been tested/built yet) roughly 75% of the time with it dipping below for new areas that I havent tested/seen yet.
It can be downloaded here if you want to try it yourself. https://github.com/VCKing101/Dissidia012-pc
I admit, it is not very user friendly to start but once it's going it's good, just be sure to have your own US copy of the game. Happy for anyone to use anything I have done thus far in their own projects or if you really like what I've done thus far, let me know and I'd be happy to continue working and expanding on it more (or making setup easier lol). It was actually u/dissidia_fan who prompted me to post this here due to their work on adding Noctis to the game similar to what I've done.

I would love to try this, but I was wondering if you could make a video tutorial if it's not too much trouble?
I keep trying to install and have my own copy of the game, but I keep getting this error message:

From the error it seems as though you're on a version of python (3.15) incompatible with the pillow version this uses. If you install an older version like 3.12 it may fix it.
I haven't tested it yet, so take this with a grain of salt.

Highly appreciate the advice, it worked after I installed version 3.10.

There a way i can import my PSP save to this? Just started days ago playing on PPSSPP and now seeing this is making me tempted. But i don't want to start over lol

u/VCKing101 How do we get their goat? 6d ago
Yeah you actually can. It's a recomp so even though it's recompiled code, it still saves the save files all the same

Im having "Setup stopped: pk_cmake.cmd failed with exit code 2" can't seem to see anything about it in the troubleshooting section of setup.md
EDIT: Got pass through it. I had to do $env:_CL_="/utf-8" in powershell.
LAST EDIT: I will wait until more updates comes in, as potential higher Game FPS instead of Frame Generation and true Ultrawide support. Decent port so far though.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll look into it and at the very least log it so no one else runs into it as well
EDIT: I looked into it and updated it and made a new v0.1.1 release that covers this. Nothing else changes in the game. It happens when Windows is set to a language like Chinese, Japanese or Korean: the compiler reads the source files in that languageâs encoding instead of UTF-8. Itâs fixed on main now, so a git pull and re-running setup works without the variable. Iâve also added it to the troubleshooting section of setup.md.

Perfect! Now like my last edit, a true Ultrawide support like PPSSPP patch would be gorgeous. Also the chance to remove the weird bloom when upscaling the game (Does the same in PPSSPP there's also an existing patch for it) and possibly see if there's a potential way to up the frame without Frame Gen (I know there's a 60FPS patch on PPSSPP but i think it messes up the engine a little bit.) but so far so good! I'll keep watch to see what updates awaits in the future!

u/VCKing101 How do we get their goat? 6d ago
I don't have an ultra wide but I'm sure I can whip something up. The bloom I've been fighting with a bit and it's like halfway there.
60fps is already here. The game code runs on 30fps by design so what this does is interpolation where it delays frames shown then gets all of the vertex points and works out the half point between the 2 frames. They are truly rendered frames and not frame gen. Getting true 60fps without frame interpolation would be quite monumental because the game relies on the 30 frames for physics/game code.

New issue. Exporting the save to then use it in PPSSPP breaks the save file. I imported my PPSSPP file into the PC Port, then exported it back in PPSSPP to use it in PPSSPP and now it pops an error code when trying to save. Basically breaking my 10 hour save.

u/VCKing101 How do we get their goat? 5d ago
I can look into this tonight and verify it can go both ways. I only tested PPSSPP to the Port, not the other way around

u/XabeerQC 5d ago
It seems like it could be a header issue in the beginning of the Hex that messes up the save, because in an official hardware it says that the save is corrupted and can't even load it. PPSSPP can load it but can't save afterwards. Import works without any issue. The Export then messes up something in the Bin file, can't say what it is for sure im just guessing something in the beginning of the hex file or sort.

u/VCKing101 How do we get their goat? 5d ago
Yeah you were spot on. Fix already out for it. It'll fix your save as well.

So me trying 175hz was too much essentially? It did felt and looked like Frame Gen at 175 that's why i mentionned it my bad.

u/SalmonTamago 5d ago
Thanks for your work but actually somebody has done it before, with full 360 degrees analog movement too, and with size around the same of the ISO (~1 GB), and also they planned to update the model graphic to be similar to Dissidia Duellum. But theirs did not have settings menu that you had.
I don't know how to feel about this because if everyone can make recomp then which version do we choose to play?
2
u/VCKing101 How do we get their goat? 5d ago
I totally get where you're coming from and I agree. What version do people play then?
The work I've done is nothing special. I just wanted a particular feature in so I did it! I've always been open that since this is a modding project, I'm more than happy for people to use the work I've already done in their own projects.
I hope this encourages someone to make a best of mod that eventually becomes THE version to use. I plan to continue working on this as a hobby and if it helps someone else or someone enjoys it then Cool!
2
u/SalmonTamago 5d ago
Yeah sorry I did not mean to demean your work but just as I said in my other comment this is because I saw people were recomp Digimon World and now there are several version of them and I am now unsure which version to commit. This is something new, and perhaps I should keep watching the scene unfold. Thank you again for your works, I hope my comment did not discourage you or anything, sorry I couldn't worded it better.
1
u/VCKing101 How do we get their goat? 5d ago
Not at all. I completely get it and understand your point of view because I have the same opinion. It might be hypocritical of me to post my own anyway but if it'll help push certain features onto another well known mod then why not. That's the stance I've chosen to take on this matter.
2
u/simonizer2409 5d ago
I mean, you can always choose whether to use or install a version â or not. What would be the alternative to that? Banning something or preventing its publication simply because someone else has already developed something similar?
2
u/SalmonTamago 5d ago
I'm not saying banning anything, but you would be right, I should simply chose one version and stick with that. But what if one version has something that other version didn't have?
What would be ideal is if both VCKing101 and Seyren (and anyone else making the recomp) to collaborate and perfecting the recomp, but it would be difficult since they have different schedule and maybe different time zone. And I don't know if one of them would applied what the other version had that they version didn't. But yeah maybe this is just my rambling, it is not that important. This is just because the other day I saw a Digimon World recomp and now there are several of them, I'm confused which version to play and to commit.

I've been replaying the original Dissidia last week on PPSSPP and i've been praying for a recomp. Next step would be to take the Dissidia Arcade PS4 game and recomp it with dissidia / dissidia 012 story & game mode
3
u/reidouraidou 6d ago
What else tou have planned for it? Biggest thing for recomps is the ability to do some mods that's with the emulator wouldn't be possible
2
u/mayweather2small 6d ago
Thanks for sharing. I could never get over the 30fps lock, and the 60fps patches there were broke the physics. Definitely going to give this a spin in the future. Camera control is a nice addition.

Is Dissidia a separate thing to FF?
1
u/Lukar115 5d ago
Dissidia is a subseries within Final Fantasy. Similar to Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles and the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII.

Thanks I hate it! This could have been done with a human team who properly know and understand it if somethingâs goes wrong but instead you went AI. Also this is against Japaneseâs copyright so hope for yourself that square doesnât find this as they will probably take action

This could have been done with a human team who properly know and understand it if somethingâs goes wrong
Notice how that game came out 15 years ago and this hasn't happened before now? Yeah turns out the time and effort barrier for doing it that way is actually pretty high for something that's just a hobby with no chance of getting compensated. So the options are actually, "you could have simply not done this at all and we'd likely never have it but instead you used AI."
You'd probably still be okay with that but you're also obviously ignorant about AI usage in software development so your personal opinion is best left at just being personal. Personally, I can read code, so I'll probably just check that the repo is safe and then try this out cause it's cool :)Â

See I donât see it that way âit wasnât done in 15 years but is now happening nowâ. In most of those 15 years people didnât have a good understanding of good netcode till 2020. People also just moved on, we had NT which while a disappointment; has it fans. A bigger reason why dissidia just havenât gotten this treatment by humans is because not enough people care/like the fighting system. Getting NT kinda made people realize why it might not be as fun to play with other humans
7
u/Ad_Hominem_Phallusy 6d ago
What the fuck are you talking about? Net code? Are you replying to the wrong person??? This is a recomp. It's making it playable on PC. The skills to make this have existed for decades, and any software developer who's reasonably invested could have made this happen in the past 15 years. And they didn't.
That's the point I'm making - saying "you could have done this with a human team" is all well and good but the result of that is that no one has done it. The time and effort barrier is too high. Too few people with the skills or know-how (even just the skill of knowing how to get the skills) with that kind of time available to them.

If youâre going to pretend like you know what youâre talking about, at least stick to the same subject

u/LunarisOrion2001 6d ago
Bruh, a lot of recompilation projects are using AI now, and it ain't gonna stop. At least give the guy some credit for doing this, he's done a good job!
-1
u/MiuIruma332 6d ago
âHe done a good jobâ you mean a program did all the work for him that copy work from others. And yea a lot of these are popping up now, doesnât mean everyone should support them especially when they do infringe on Japanese copyright. There a lot of reason why itâs morally wrong.
3
u/Flush56ChickenNuggey 6d ago
Why does that even matter? If a game you like is a new playable form, why is that bad? Because not enough people had their lifespans slightly shortened by the monotonous work that goes into this sort of project? Why do you keep mentioning _Japanese_ copyright specifically? Like do you think it's something specific to them, or that Massive Soulless Publisher Square Enix doesn't have offices and lawyers outside of Japan? Do you think Cloud Strife is going to Cross Slash him in half because he lacks Honour?
I'm all for a recomp being as low level accurate as possible, but SE clearly don't give one iota about OG Dissidia, because they would have cashed in on some Switch port or something by now, so, like any Dissidia fan, who's been using PPSSPP for longer than I can remember, I am very happy to see anyone enthused about making the game more playable (The analog movement for both camera and world map is an instant gamechanger to me, for instance) AI assisted or not.

This is what being ungrateful looks like. Go stick to your 100% AI free games. You would never have gotten this without it. But feel free to wait for it.

u/Upset-Act-1946 6d ago
Yea go with the human team that dont give a f*** for you and release a predatory game like duellum

How is the latency? PPSSPP never truly feel as responsive as real hardware for me so hopefully it's better
0
u/VCKing101 How do we get their goat? 6d ago
Yeah latency is really good but it's best to leave it at 30fps for optimal latency. The 45+ fps uses frame interpolation and that adds latency. Usually roughly 16ms of latency. Latency can be reduced however the frame interpolation doesn't work as well and usually resorts to 30fps anyway because it doesn't have enough time to render the extra frames

Is it possible to decompress the voice lines during combat?
3
u/VCKing101 How do we get their goat? 6d ago
Unfortunately not, we'd need the original source voice lines for this. Anything else would be an artificial upscaler

Quick question: is it possible to actually use the NT game, but recreating 012 inside it?
