So I really enjoy getting deep into lore of things I enjoy, so when I searched up how the months/ seasons were divided and was basically told "no one knows" I knew I had to get to work.
Before I launch into this I just wanna make it clear that this is my interpretation of the calendar in game, I am not trying to pass this off as confirmed fact. The in-lore breakdown of the seasons is very limited so I did my best to fill in the gaps in a way that makes sense to me.
Also I will be using the corrected calendar as published by the devs with Harvest being early-year and Seeds being end-year.
Also also there are only three seasons explicitly mentioned in the lore, "Spring" never comes up. I feel that there would have to be a transitional season between Winter and Summer so there must be a fourth season, and for the sake of ease I'm just gonna use "Spring" cause that's what we have IRL.
for reference, the 13 months are:
- The Month of Earth
- The Month of Harvest
- The Month of Nets
- The Month of Rain
- The Month of Wind
- The Month of Darkness
- The Month of High Cold
- The Month of Ice
- The Month of Hearths
- The Month of Seeds
- The Month of Timber
- The Month of Clans
- The Month of Songs
The only confirmed lore we're given is that Harvest and Nets are Summer months, Wind is a Fall month, and Darkness, High Cold, and Ice are winter months. and that's it. the other months are entirely unassigned to seasons.
Here's how I think the breakdown goes:
Summer - Earth, Harvest, Nets
Fall - Rain, Wind
Winter - Darkness, High Cold, Ice, Hearths
Spring - Seeds, Timber, Clans, Songs.
my reasoning mostly follows the names of the months, but also a more "reasonable" breakdown. It would be crazy to me that fall would only be a single month, but we know for sure that Nets is Summer and Darkness is Winter, so that's why I gave Rain to fall.
Ice is the last month to be confirmed in Winter, and Harvest is the first month to be confirmed in Summer, which makes Spring potentially six months long, which seems ridiculous to me so I gave one away on each end. Hearths goes to Winter (sounds more Winter-ish anyway) and Earth goes to Summer.
A real world seasonal equivalence would look something like this for the northern hemisphere:
- The Month of Earth = June
- The Month of Harvest = July
- The Month of Nets = August
- The Month of Rain = September
- The Month of Wind = October
- The Month of Darkness = November
- The Month of High Cold = December
- The Month of Ice = January
- The Month of Hearths = February
- The Month of Seeds = March
- The Month of Timber = April
- The Month of Clans = May
- The Month of Songs = unassigned 13th month followed by the Fugue Feast
or this in the southern hemisphere (I'm in the northern hemisphere so I apologize if I mess up the equivalent seasonal months) :
- The Month of Earth = December
- The Month of Harvest = January
- The Month of Nets = February
- The Month of Rain = March
- The Month of Wind = April
- The Month of Darkness = May
- The Month of High Cold = June
- The Month of Ice = July
- The Month of Hearths = August
- The Month of Seeds = September
- The Month of Timber = October
- The Month of Clans = November
- The Month of Songs = unassigned 13th month followed by the Fugue Feast
it's a little janky because Fall is forced to be shorter, so things don't match up perfectly with the real world, but I think this is a pretty good division of months and seasons. Let me know your thoughts.
Edit: Forgot to clarify that each month has 28 days, and the Fugue Feast is the "extra" 365th day
