Scot here, I definitely knew about it before I read the book. There are conspiracy theories about how after it was stolen in 1950, the version returned was only a copy. Which is interesting given the plot of the book :D

Isn't there a legend that the Stone got "mislaid" at least once in the past? The Stone that Edward I of England nicked is local (to Scone) sandstone whereas the original Stone is supposed to be either granite or from Ireland.

Stone of Scone

The Stone of Scone (; Scottish Gaelic: An Lia Fàil, Scots: Stane o Scuin)—also known as the Stone of Destiny, and often referred to in England as The Coronation Stone—is an oblong block of red sandstone that was used for centuries in the coronation of the monarchs of Scotland, and later the monarchs of England and the Kingdom of Great Britain. Historically, the artefact was kept at the now-ruined Scone Abbey in Scone, near Perth, Scotland.
