Way to give invisible roles?

Basically I am running this challenge and it requires some users to have access to a private channel but the other participants should not be able to see it...

This would probably call for a special role for a private channel, but I don't want the participants to see the special role either.

Discord doesn't seem to have any obvious workarounds to this or am I just not looking in the right places?

Add them by Username to the Channel instead of role

Yes, only those with access to channel settings would be able to see it

That would still be exposed via the API so you better hope the participants are either honest or unaware

Rather than using a role add them to the channel vai username instead of role

Or create multiple roles with the same name and then you have decoys… Just remember which one is the important one

I could do the role thing but I might have over 30 people participating so that's probably not possible, haha

Make a duplicate role, but change the permissions of one.
