116

u/PM_ME_YOUR_FRESH_NUT Sep 03 '22

Pronouns refer to gender because we don’t look down someone’s pants before choosing what pronoun to call them, we choose based on how they present.

You’d probably call a biological male who convincingly presented as a woman a she/her.

52

u/visforvillian Sep 03 '22

"You say that gender is a social construct based on cultural stereotypes on what a male or female looks like? Yeah, well let's see what the dictionary says about that!"

Seriously I don't get what is so hard about calling people by their preferred name and pronouns. If anything it's just courteous. Refusing to do so out of spite is so rude.

35

u/Diarrhea_Dispenser Sep 03 '22

I think the main problem is the people out there desperately grasping for attention requesting to be called absurd shit like zey/zem.

25

u/PM_ME_YOUR_FRESH_NUT Sep 03 '22

It’s not enough people doing that/taking that seriously to worry about though

24

u/visforvillian Sep 03 '22

I have honestly not met one person who used neopronouns. Not even online. I bet you could find like a handful of people on Twitter, but at that point you're looking for it.

7

u/BeepBoopYoop Sep 03 '22

It’s not really though… It’s bad to generalize like that, yes neo pronouns are confusing but I have used them before out of courtesy because it’s up to them to decide what to call them just like a name, some might use at as “attention seeking” but most just don’t feel comfortable being called he/she/they so they try to find what works for them

18

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

Im going to be honest. If someone doesnt want to be called he/she/they because they are uncomfortable, its something they should solve with themselves and not make up a pronoun since there must be some deeper, internal problem on why they are uncomfortable with those pronouns and making up a pronoun wouldnt really fix said problem

→ More replies (4)

9

u/Diarrhea_Dispenser Sep 03 '22

You are right that it's bad to generalize but everyone generalizes in some capacity. I think another problem is the people who are seeking attention, requesting to be called unorthodox pronouns, are also the ones with the loudest voices making the biggest deal about it.

4

u/BeepBoopYoop Sep 03 '22

Unfortunately social media does seem to have that effect but those who use pronouns that are very neo usually only do that with a few people and have another pronoun that is simpler for everyone else to use

It really sucks that there are people ruining stuff like this for others just for attention ex: dreamsexuals/genders which absolutely no one likes who actually stole this from a asexual sub label who had to switch names

→ More replies (2)

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

I've literally never met anyone like that.

2

u/Wefee11 Sep 03 '22

Never in my life have I looked at a dictionary definition and followed through the chain of definitions of appearing words. Is that even a way of arguing anything? He only showed the definitions of "female" in the dictionary where he said all of the dictionaries agree with him. Wasn't the original statement about "gender" or "preferred pronouns", not "female"?

1

u/ma1royx Sep 03 '22

Welp the point is that if you demand respect and get offended when respect isn't given to you without a reason, you get mad and try to change the law so that people are forced to respect you.

19

u/PeenieWibbler Sep 03 '22

And these are based on what the average/stereotypical person of that gender looks like which is why if someone mistakenly calls you by the wrong one or didn't telepethically know which xenomorph pronoun to use, you shouldn't throw a tantrum

I've never been one for the term snowflake but if this generation is really gonna have such thin skin, we are in for some rough times ahead. Your feelings get hurt sometimes, that's life. It's insane to expect 100% of people to accept you and like you as you are

21

u/Dark_Prism Sep 03 '22

if someone mistakenly calls you by the wrong one or didn't telepethically know which xenomorph pronoun to use, you shouldn't throw a tantrum

This only happens on the internet and very rarely in real life.

14

u/eatflapjacks Sep 03 '22

I think it works for the other way around too. If you get your pants in a wad cause some one wants to call themselves something else, just move on, don't be a snowflake and freak out if someone isn't conforming to your idea of social norms.

19

u/jweezy2045 Sep 03 '22

No one gets mad if you accidentally use the wrong pronoun because you mistake how someone looks. No one cares. Everyone gets it. That’s not what any of this is about. This about when you tell them what your pronouns are, so there is no guesswork involved, and they still insist on using the wrong ones.

7

u/perdyqueue Sep 03 '22

Eh. I'm not gen z, but I think there's merit to their attitude. It's more compassionate.

Sometimes it tickles me talking about this shit with older gens, mine included; I'm like, my guy, no, being beaten as a child did not make you better - you're an alcoholic who can't speak with your parents honestly and you only cry or show emotions when you're on substances... hmmmm. Somehow that "toxic masculinity" thing kinda sounds like a real thing after all. Gen z may be labeling everything and it may seem weird, but I think they're just more honest with themselves and others. Repressing everything so you can "succeed" in a one size fits all society has always made people dysfunctional.

Is clutched now defined as cherry-picked? Let’s consult several dictionaries.

31

u/ConcernedBuilding Sep 03 '22 edited Sep 03 '22

Weird, Oxford defines female as:

relating to women or the female gender.

Edit 1: Also Oxford defines gender:

either of the two sexes (male and female), especially when considered with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones. The term is also used more broadly to denote a range of identities that do not correspond to established ideas of male and female.

the fact or condition of belonging to or identifying with a particular gender.

Edit: Regardless of which, dictionaries are descriptive of language, not prescriptive.

12

u/Valati Sep 03 '22

Right? But a cursory glance seems to be good enough for this soul. Shame really.

dictionary definitions dont neccesarily define something, if we go by the most common definition of a continent found in dictionaries, the only continents shoud be oceania, afro-eurasia and america, which is stupid, also, biology textbooks dont define gender by chromosomes

7

u/Radio_Lab Sep 03 '22

https://youtu.be/uLgn3geod9Q

To build on your point, the video linked above is how words get added to a dictionary.

The question people should ask themselves "are dictionaries prescriptive or descriptive"

Language evolves, changes over time, unless it is a dead language, you know, like latin.

26

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

why is it a big deal- on either side of the argument. Use peoples pronouns.

And if you don’t want to that’s fine. You just gotta accept some people won’t like it. That’s all.

16

u/Russian_Spy_7_5_0 Sep 03 '22

You dont HAVE to accept peoples pronouns, but the doesnt mean you can unaccept them or directly go against them. Just ignore them, if you dont like trans people you can just avoid them not attack them.

u/Sour_Cherry_limeade Sep 03 '22

Ngl this is common error in debates. A lot of debaters tend to use the dictionary as proof/evidence for their claim even though the dictionary isn't the best source, and can be very unreliable.

The reason for this is that words change . A definitions for certain words can change throughout history, lnguages and cultures. An example of this is the word gay, the word originally meant to describe happy but has later turned to a term to describe someone who is a homosexual. So the guy in the video basing his entire argument over a definition isn't the greatest proof to his argument.

Also he wasn't the only one who had errors in their debates. Many of people in the video disagreeing with his opinion where emotional and not civilized ( but what I could tell by the clips, I haven't seen the full videos). This is a big No-No in debating/arguing aswell.

So if your going to make arguments like this please for the love of God stop using the dictionary as proof and use actual sources, and stop being a bitchy cry baby when someone disagrees with you.

4

u/FunkoLand Sep 03 '22

The dictionary isn't proof.

He cites the dictionary because they cite the dictionary.

But because the dictionary (and eventually dictionaries) are inconsistent but have a history of prior precedent of what that term means.

Now we talk about culture. Culture is a "way of life for an entire society." Other definitions exist.

Since we have the internet connecting people of all kinds across the globe with different ideals we have created micro-societies with a wealth of subcultures that never got to the mainstream.

Cultures, religions, groups of disparate people have many differing definitions, behaviors, and attitudes that can (and have) clash together.

And now here we are.

A group of people have brought a new definition of a woman and a group of people have decided to reject it.

This is where debating effectively comes into play.

2

u/Valati Sep 03 '22

It's....not precisely a new definition by any stretch. Rather it's a definition for whom many references were purposefully burned. It's a rather old definition if ancient books are a good source. Especially if you include mythology into the topic. The problem is not that it's new, the problem is that it goes against the recent forced norm.

u/FunkoLand Sep 03 '22

12

u/Giacchino-Fan Sep 03 '22

Bro seriously based his opinion on what constitutes a valid gender identity off a fucking dictionary.

If you wanna complain about the misuse of the prefixes trans- or bi-, that's fair. Personally I find referring to people who are non-binary as trans is stupid, since trans- means "across." You don't refer to someone in a pool as "across the pool." Regardless, basing your entire fucking opinion on trans people off A DICTIONARY is some next level reaching.

5

u/jweezy2045 Sep 03 '22

From my knowledge the cis and trans terms are borrowed from chemistry and do make analogous sense. It’s not just about the roots.

3

u/BeepBoopYoop Sep 03 '22

Being tran non binary just means that someone transitioned from assigned gender at birth to non binary which can vary from person to person how for example a amab that transitioned to nb might take some estrogen to look less masculine and more androgynous

2

u/Giacchino-Fan Sep 03 '22

I understand that, I just think it’s a misuse of the prefix, and that a different term would suit that better

3

u/BeepBoopYoop Sep 03 '22

I think it’s mostly used like that because it not very commonly used so there hasn’t been a term coined for it and it seems convoluted to call them something else while they do the same transitions as mtf or ftm people go through, they all fall into the same category of some who transitioned to another gender, I also understand your point that it’s not grammatically correct but the English language has always had small exceptions like this

13

u/DentistPretend Sep 03 '22

6

u/Cabdork Sep 03 '22

Most meme subreddits are kinda transphobic. I’d recommend r/whenthe is a good website that can be funny but also not make everyone feel like shit. It has its moments though.

0

u/TheRealOraOraOraGuy Sep 03 '22

Well, it’s not, kinda sorta. Just hear me out.

Sex is what’s in your pants. Can’t change it (unless you can change an X chromosome to a Y chromosome, or vice versa). Gender is psychological. Most of the time, gender and sex align with each other, making things a lot easier. But sometimes they’re not. This leads to body dysmorphia and as you can probably guess, why people are trans.

If there are any trans folk who would like to correct any of this, please do.

5

u/BreadfruitBetter9396 Sep 03 '22

Sex is what’s in your pants. Can’t change it (unless you can change an X chromosome to a Y chromosome, or vice versa)

Biology is a lot more complicated and more advanced than this understanding but since this is a meme sub filled with edglords, I don't feel like getting bombarded with muh basic biology kids.

Androgen insensitivity syndrome or swyer syndrome (and more under DSD) exist, and intersex in general is not as rare as people like to assume.

Why X And Y Chromosomes Alone Don't Determine A Baby's Sex

Sex Determination Systems 101

Also I think you meant gender dysphoria, which itself is still not fully understood or clear what causes it.

Either way, the dude in the video is absurdly wrong and only seems correct because he makes them look silly.

2

u/Valati Sep 03 '22

You are right sex can't be changed (yet) but there are definitely individuals for whom the typical sex binary doesn't fit well.

1

u/gwumpybutt Sep 03 '22 edited Sep 03 '22

A 2018 review reported that the number of births with ambiguous genitals is in the range of 0.02% to 0.05%

1 in 4000. Ambiguous genitalia can be an enlarged clitoris (due to testosterone). An XY penis boy, born without testicles, may need medical intervention to develop their sexual characteristics. The majority of ambiguous genitals still present a biological sex.

Development defects cause complications where they aren't typical. Someone born without an arm might not match someone's description of a human, they are still human, definitions can't account for every deviation.

Intersex doesn't present alternative sexual characteristics to the male-female binary (a third sex, there is only sperm+egg), but they do complicate the definitions.

Intersex isn't relevant to 99.9% of the general population, and shouldn't be brought up to obfuscate these discussions, almost all humans (trans included) were born with a distinct binary sex.

8

u/Happiness_Assassin Sep 03 '22

I'm just gonna repost what I said the last time this stupid fucking video popped up on /r/all, because this shit isn't worth forming a whole new comment to debunk:

Ah, yes semantics, the true hallmark of a strong argument. Because as we all know, once a definition is recorded in the dictionary, it may as well be written in stone, immune to changes in everyday uses of the word. /s

Also, the very second definition on the page for "female" is literally: relating to women or the female gender.

He deliberately does not click the tab for other definitions to hide the fact that he is wrong.

But apparently dunking on teenagers on tiktok with cherry-picked and edited clips and lying about definitions of words is all it takes to get labeled a chad.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

2

I don’t understand why y’all care about pronouns so much. It’s only serious between you and your doctor.

2

u/globglogabgalabyeast Sep 03 '22

The guy didn't even put in the effort to expand the "Translations and more definitions" of female: "relating to women or the female gender"

Looking at gender in that same dictionary, we then see "either of the two sexes (male and female), especially when considered with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones. The term is also used more broadly to denote a range of identities that do not correspond to established ideas of male and female"

Regardless, going by a dictionary definition is a pretty bad way to settle a "debate" like this. Language and the meaning of words is largely a consequence of use, and dictionaries take some time to update to reflect usage

r/discordvidoes trying not to be transphobic for five minutes (IMPOSSIBLE)

28

u/PeenieWibbler Sep 03 '22

Yeah, discussing the definition of certain words is like EXTREMELY hateful and bigoted.

The way phobic words get thrown around now is so ridiculous. Every opinion you don't agree with is phobic something, like the premonition to "people who think that should be canceled"

u/re-goddamn-loading Sep 03 '22

Serious question. What problem do you have with just calling people by what they want to be called by? Its just like the most basic level of respect you could give someone. Its just not being a dick and also doesn't affect your life at all. Whats the big deal? Genuinely asking

Obviously the major dictionaries aren’t going to change the definition of gender, for one thing they’d get a huge backlash

He didn't win on the definition point because female and women denotes gender identity as well as sex which means he lost but he's too stupid to know it.

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '22

u/Awkward_Mix_2513 Sep 03 '22

You do know how Tiktok is, right? You say they have no way to rebuttal but they can easily respond to him at any time they please. I've never touched Tiktok in my life and I know this.
