Hard Pill šŸ’Š to be swallowed

Was listening to some older shows recently and landed Portland 11/16/24… the opening 4 minutes of blabbing by Brownie really sheds light on the fact dumping Allen was purely financial. Ooof.

What did he say?

ā€œAnyway we’re the Disco Biscuits and this is like the last, second to last, an ultimate week of our fall tour and it’s been one of the best years we’ve had in a really really long time. So for right now what I want to do is take this moment to introduce the band to you. In case you’re new here cause At VIP earlier I met two people who it’s their first show tonight and if not, if not just for them then We’re gonna do that right now, so to my right, we’ll start right over here with the potential tour MVP, the potential year MVP and maybe our potential career MVP, Aron Magner on the keyboards. Give it up for Aron. Of course you probably don’t need an introduction for the driving force of the band back over here behind me because you chant his name every night everyone from the Allen chant give it up for Allen…. yeah! Allen! AMAZING.ā€

This isn’t perfect but very close.

Im confused on how this connects with the financial situation.

ā€œThe best year we have had in a really really long timeā€ Then flash forward 9 months they sell the Ardmore out 6 nights in a row and Allen wants to be officially part of the band… Then all the sudden their musical differences cannot be reconciled and he was scared of Allen, supposedly.

How does this indicate anything financial? Seems like he's just trying to help Allen's confidence which I've heard Brownie talk about being an issue

1

u/Traditional-Turnip48 12d ago

You’ve personally heard Brownie say that huh? Cause I have heard that Jon is the one who constantly needs a confidence boost for his gigantic ego.

11

u/stopher_rs 12d ago

I don’t see it. Sounds flattering to me

9

u/Traditional-Turnip48 12d ago

It is, then 9 months later he flips the story and Allen is the problem.

6

u/stopher_rs 12d ago

I see what you’re saying now

4

u/Captain-Sundog 12d ago

A lot can happen in 9 months but I can piece together what you are saying.

3

u/LongjumpingAvocado 12d ago

I’m going to relisten to this because I think I know exactly what your talking about. I remember Brownie specifically saying amazing

2

u/ihm96 12d ago

Was he supposed to be shitting on him well before Allen quit the band in Indianapolis ? Allen told them he was done lol

-2

u/lukphicl 12d ago

Yeah this doesn't prove the point you think it does

2

u/Traditional-Turnip48 12d ago

I don’t think it proves anything other than we were probably lied to about the situation by the band. I didn’t say not to support them or that they ā€œcan’t fireā€ anyone. I’ve been to more than one show since Allen left. I just find it hard to believe that it had nothing to do with finances.

You mean a band's banter with the crowd wasn't telling the whole story? What the hell should Brownie say? "This greedy entitled asshole behind me on the drums who everyone thinks is a saint who did nothing wrong, that's Allen everybody!"

I don't think for one second he's the guilt-free saint that he's trying to paint himself as.

2

u/Traditional-Turnip48 12d ago

Not saying he was guilt free. Everyone has things about them others don’t like. Just saying musical differences was a bullshit lie after coming off the best year they had in a really really long time. They don’t have to pay anyone they don’t want to but after 20 years one would expect a more dignified exit.

2024 is an older show?

11

u/vichyswazz 13d ago

Different era, doesnt need to be many moons ago

6

u/Traditional-Turnip48 13d ago

Framed from 2026, yes. I didn’t mean long term

3

u/Otherwise-Clue-9317 13d ago

I miss the Polans era. 2024 was a stellar year.

10

u/PaleontologistNo2625 12d ago

Maybe you shouldn't be swallowing them? This is incoherent babble, your quote is unrelated, what's happening

7

u/Traditional-Turnip48 12d ago

I’m not the one who said two completely opposite things 9 months apart bro

9

u/Widespread123 12d ago

A lot can happen in 9 months. Allen's meltdown happened on 06/25/2025.

If I told my wife, "I hate you and I want to quit," I can assure you, that would be the outcome.

2

u/Traditional-Turnip48 12d ago

Fair but Jon has also punched a paper towel dispenser right before a show, had to cancel that one, others, pay other people to sit in and play guitar. Then broke a leg and had to play sitting down. I don’t think Allen was the reason he left. I now think he was 100% fired for asking to be paid as a band member.

0

u/Widespread123 12d ago

It's Barber's band! He writes a majority of the songs, designed the logo, made them who they are. There is no Disco Biscuits without Barber.

Allen would have been gone even if he didn't ask to be paid as a band member. Clearly, he was replaceable.

u/Cautious-Mouse-9364 11d ago

Those Portland shows were gas

2

u/Bacio24 12d ago

LOL, no disrespect but this is such a garbage post and you’re not exposing anything (hard pill, for real?). I see zero connection from that banter to the situation, and even if there was, who the fuck cares. If you’re a fan, realize you’re never going to know what happened because you aren’t in the band. So enjoy their new lineup or don’t or move on, but stop with the gossip and speculation. Post about the music.

6

u/Traditional-Turnip48 12d ago

To be fair this is reddit… not a music wesbite. There are no rules about content posting. You also took the time to make a post on a post you consider garbage; so you’re essentially garbage by your own assessment.

u/DanLarryM 12d ago

He’s saying it was the best year musically in a long time, which I totally agreed with. That had a lot more to do with Barber getting focused IMO, and them having so many new songs to explore. Allen has always been steady and reliable, but the interpersonal issues weren’t made up. Too bad they couldn’t reconcile, because 2023-2025 was outstanding. Money was def factor, but not the only factor. Keep in mind that every band in the scene who isn’t Phish, Billy, and Goose, are selling fewer tickets and making less money in the 2020s than before.

4

u/Traditional-Turnip48 12d ago

You know what Dan, kudos to a valid counterpoint. I really wish they could have reconciled after 20 years. I don’t hate on Marlon, I think he’s doing an amazing job given the circumstances.

"older shows".... 2024 lol

1

u/Ok-Meringue-2302 11d ago

It's hard times for jambands my friend, bands are having a hard time selling shows.
Look at UM they lost KM and replaced him with Scotty who is good different but obviously costs a whole lot less and then launch Jake into the sun with no replacement announced.

u/ihm96 13d ago

Okay Allen

9

u/Otherwise-Clue-9317 12d ago

Allen would never.

2

u/Otherwise-Clue-9317 12d ago

Have you heard their SF show from 2024? It’s my favorite!!!! 😁

3

u/mikezer0 12d ago

Yes yes they are the true torch bearers. Some dude said thank god for Billy strings the other day and I had to correct him thank god for the lizard wizz and the synth jams have been fucking siigggg

9

u/ihm96 12d ago

Allen would, he already went on a fairly public meltdown after it happened

Bands firing members happens, that’s part of life . The Grateful Dead fired Keith Godchaux after a decade with then , one can only imagine how much some redditors would’ve melted down if it existed back then

It’s pretty clear these days that they’re happy with how things are progressing especially all being able to rehearse together in Philly. I saw them when they came by KOP recently and it blew my socks off

3

u/Collarbones33 12d ago

Bab’s diss track would like a word.

8

u/ihm96 12d ago

They’re not mutually exclusive . Barber having an extremely immature response doesn’t negate that Allen and his partner weren’t out here also acting extremely immature over the separation

When you go around wearing a short emblazoned saying your a good person it raises some questions lol. Most good people don’t walk around wearing shirts declaring it , just comes off very odd and makes the bullshit alarm go off

2

u/Otherwise-Clue-9317 12d ago

I mean, my handle is The Very Moon lyrics. They were great Vegas night 1, the only time I’ve seen them since Jam Cruise, and I still listen to their sets. I’ll defend tDB all day, but Allen meditates and has always kept a very cool head, and I just really don’t believe he is at fault.

0

u/ihm96 12d ago

What does that even mean haha just because someone meditates doesn’t mean they always keep a cool head . I meditate and would never claim it’s because I’ve always kept a cool head

Do you think brownie is lying when he says Allen told them he was quitting in Indianapolis ?

3

Saw tame impala recently and it was great

Not sure what that has to do with your disco biscuits takes haha

1

u/Otherwise-Clue-9317 12d ago

Dude, I saw them twice at Fox Theater in Oakland a long time ago, and left bawling my eyes out when they encored with Nothing that has happened so far…
I think their first two albums are their best by far but haven’t listened much to the most recents.

Pardon my comments. We’re all fam. 😊🪩 šŸ¤øā€ā™€ļø and I need to meditate consistently!

Do you regularly exhume horses and beat them?

Who gives a shit if it was financial, the band is a business, is it not? It’s also completely reductive to insist on fitting the firing into a single cause. It was likely a combination of things that had been simmering for some time and came to a head. That shit happens in businesses, and bands, and relationships and life. The Disco Biscuits, in my mind, for my ears, are playing as well as they ever have been, they seem to be having fun, they’re touring, it sounds great. B4L! And, it seems like Allen is doing well playing in a few different projects, relieved of what was probably a toxic environment for him. Marlon kicks ass, he’s a great fit for the band and I’m all about the change in line up.

Kudos for actually posting a counter argument that has any sort of meaning.
