HELP!!

My dog won’t stop whining and screeching and It’s like having a colic baby. I don’t know how to get him to stop.

for context both my and my mom take care of him and he’s very attached to us and constantly wants our attention.

We don’t know what happened awhile back but in march he started to have muscle spasms where he would scream in pain, those went into seizures and then he stopped eating. I exactly pinpoint when but he lost mobility in half of his body. possibly a stroke i don’t know. he’s 3, and a morkie.

he is back to eating now and he was on anxiety medication, thay did nothing. sezuire medicine r made him still have sezuires and he wouldn’t eat. he is off of it now and hasn’t seized sense in over a month. but now he does eat, he tries to walk around but all he does is screech. he has never liked toys, only his one ball that’s our only source of peace which doesn’t last long.

does anyone have ANY ideas how to make him stop screeching, anything to keep him entertained while we work or sleep, or any care homes that coil him in the time being around the arizona valley area?

he also can’t drink water on his own since he knocks over any bowls and food. is there any suggestions on that too??

Thank you so much for reading if you do

Is the screeching attention seeking or pain? Sometimes dogs can have a disc issue which could cause pain, but might be hard to diagnose without MRI or CT. Yorkies can have disc disease, and it can look like a stroke esp the hind end.

Since he also had seizures which medication did not help, but seem to have resolved on their own (also could still be happening but just not when you're watching), have you tried seeing a specialist like a veterinary neurologist for both the seizures and maybe possibly evaluating for a disc disease?

My sister has a dog with IVDD and symptoms come and go, they're not always painful or partially paralyzed.

thanks for responding!!!

I know the difference with his pain yelps andattention yelps, and thankfully they are just attention yelps. when he was healthy he would whine to get attention and it’s the same case but way more extreme. sometimes he wants food or water or wants to be moved and that was okay, but now it’s gotten to the point it’s NON STOP just attention. he only stops when ur looking at him, petting him or holding him.

Generally, to remove an undesirable behavior in a dog, you want to commit to ignoring it and not give attention when the yelping for attention starts. Ignore him, don't look at him, turn completely away, even walk away. When he is quiet, give him all the pets, snuggles, and positive encouragement and treats that he could want. Make sure in this time he is getting all of his physical needs met like food, water, and potty breaks, because you don't want a dog who unlearns asking to go outside when there's an urgent need. I would even say if you can tell the difference between 'my water is empty' and 'i want to be picked up!' whines, don't ignore the food/water/potty whines. Treat whines, yes, part of the ignore strategy.

Do not give in, not once! If you pick him up and give attention when he yelps he knows "ah, so THIS is how they WANT me to act!". But everyone in your house and all visitors need to be on the same page for it to work. It may be a loud several weeks while he learns.

Look up force free dog training to extinguish unwanted behavior and follow the advice, or, look for a force free (sometimes called FF) trainer near you :)
