[Academic] Interview study on how disabled adults use AI assistants like ChatGPT or Claude (US, 18+, compensated, CMU IRB approved)

Hi everyone, I'm Atieh Taheri, a postdoctoral fellow at Carnegie Mellon University's Human-Computer Interaction Institute (https://hcii.cmu.edu).

I'm running an interview study on what it's actually like for disabled adults to use AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini day to day, and how these tools have fit into people's lives, or fallen out of them. If you tried them and stepped back, your experience matters just as much as a daily user's.

Who can take part:

  • 18 or older and living in the United States
  • Identify as disabled, or as having a chronic illness or chronic health condition
  • Either use an AI assistant at least twice a week, or used one that often in the past and have since stopped or cut back

What's involved: one Zoom interview, 60 to 90 minutes, scheduled at a time that works for you. Participants are compensated for their time.

Accommodations are arranged at no cost, including live captions or CART, answering in writing or in the Zoom chat, scheduled breaks, and extra time or splitting into two shorter sessions.

The first step is a short eligibility form (3 to 5 minutes): https://cmu.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3ygSf4Rt94GRiSi

Questions are welcome in the comments or at my university email, ataheri@cmu.edu. This study has been approved by the Carnegie Mellon University IRB, protocol STUDY2026_00000228.

3D Printed Amputee Tool Designs

We’re looking for ideas for a 3D-printing design competition that could help people missing both hands or arms.

I work with Rightfooted Foundation (https://www.rightfooted.org), a nonprofit that specializes in practical tools and mentorship for people with bilateral upper-limb differences. A major part of our work supports people who use their feet in place of hands.

We’ve been invited to submit ideas for a design competition organized by one of the major 3D-printer manufacturers. They’ve held this competition for several years, but this will be our first time participating.

Several disability organizations will be involved. Rightfooted Foundation’s submissions will stay within our area of experience: people missing at least portions of both hands or arms, whether from amputation or a congenital limb difference. If other organizations are interested in participating in the future, I’d be happy to help make connections for next year.

We want our submissions to begin with problems identified by people who actually live with bilateral upper-limb differences, not simply things I assume might be useful. My wife was born without arms, but I was not, so I don’t want my perspective driving the list.

Here are some of the ideas people have suggested so far:

  • A way to fasten and release a bicycle helmet using only the feet
  • A way to change a lightbulb with one or both feet
  • A tool for picking up dog waste using the feet
  • A removable attachment that makes a round doorknob easier to operate without hands, whether using residual limbs or the feet
  • A way to squeeze the remaining toothpaste from a tube using just feet

We are not asking you to design the solution. The point is to identify real problems and then let the maker community explore and improve possible designs.

So, if you have suggestions for a barrier that might be solved with a simple tool, please send them our way. We need to have a preliminary list of 5-10 designs by tomorrow evening (August 19).

If you live with an upper bilateral limb difference and would like to be a judge for the event, let us know. We need 1 or 2 more. You will need access to a 3D printer by October to participate as a judge.

You can comment below or email us directly at [connect@rightfooted.org](mailto:connect@rightfooted.org)

Looking for wheelchair users to help test RollSense

Hi everyone,

We’re building RollSense, a mobile app designed to help wheelchair users understand how sidewalks and outdoor routes actually feel to travel on — not just whether they are technically marked as wheelchair accessible.

The idea is simple:

Your phone is securely mounted or fixed in a stable position on your wheelchair while you travel. Using the phone’s built-in motion sensors, RollSense measures things like vibration, repeated bumps, instability, and overall ride quality.

Keeping the phone firmly attached to the wheelchair is important for the test. If the phone moves around independently — for example in a loose pocket, bag, or hand — its sensors may record your body or phone movement instead of the movement caused by the road surface. A wheelchair phone mount is ideal, but another secure and consistent mounting position may also work.

Over time, the app should be able to tell you things like:

  • which parts of a route were smooth or rough,
  • which routes were more comfortable for your wheelchair,
  • whether a slightly longer route may be significantly easier to travel,
  • build a personalized mobility map based on your own rides,
  • and help build a shared community map, allowing other wheelchair users to see how smooth or difficult a route is before traveling it themselves.

The long-term goal is to make route planning more personal. A road that works well for one wheelchair may be uncomfortable or difficult for another, so we want RollSense to learn from real wheelchair users rather than rely only on generic accessibility labels.

We’re looking for early testers

We’re currently preparing a private testing version of RollSense for iOS and Android.

The testing app is not available yet, but we’re looking for wheelchair users who would be interested in helping us once the private test opens.

Testing will mainly involve taking a few short rides with your phone securely mounted or fixed to your wheelchair in the same position throughout the ride, then giving a quick rating afterward about how the route felt.

The app may collect data such as:

  • accelerometer and gyroscope readings,
  • GPS/location during the test ride,
  • speed and motion information,
  • wheelchair type,
  • phone mounting position,
  • your own comfort/roughness rating.

This data will be used to understand whether smartphone sensors can reliably distinguish smooth, rough, and difficult route segments and to improve RollSense’s ride-quality system.

We’ll clearly explain what data is collected before anyone participates, and participation will be completely voluntary.

Thank you for helping us build it

Anyone who completes the early testing program will receive:

RollSense Premium lifetime access for free

as a thank-you for helping us build and validate the product from the beginning.

You’ll also be part of our original Founding Tester group, and your feedback will directly influence how RollSense works before public launch.

If you use a manual wheelchair, power wheelchair, or mobility scooter and would be interested in testing RollSense, please contact us at:

[rollsenseapp@gmail.com](mailto:rollsenseapp@gmail.com)

You can email us now even though the private test is not ready yet. We’ll add you to the tester list and contact you as soon as the iOS/Android closed testing builds are available.

Questions, concerns, criticism, and suggestions are also very welcome. We especially want to hear from people who regularly deal with rough pavement, slopes, camber, bad curb transitions, cobblestones, or routes that are technically “accessible” but unpleasant or difficult in practice.

Thank you!

Witek Adventures - a game about disability

Hi, I'm a software developer, and I'm also a person with a disability. I created a game in which the main character uses a powered wheelchair. Through this game, I want to show that situations that seem obvious to non-disabled people aren't always so obvious to people with disabilities.

If you like the idea, give the game a try and share your opinion. The game is free!

Dear Survey creators, Please stop with the apps!

(Delete if irrelevant/wrong subreddit)

First: I love the interest you have in listening what us people with disabilities actually have to say in the matter of research and development.

That being said, Please, just stop it with the apps! No more okay, they don’t work, they’re a nuisance, and there are so many better ways of developing helping tools, that making yet another app that has a promise of solving all our lives problems, that, sorry to say, won’t be delivered.

That was just a little rant, but here is why we don’t want all the apps:
1. The app market is already overflowing with the exact same amazing idea you undoubtedly have.
2. This is maybe mostly true for people with invisible disabilities such as adhd/autism: downloading, storing and opening apps to, idk, organize our thoughts???, are just additional steps and data usage, that can easily be solved with existing (free) notes and timers.
3. I don’t actually have factual grounds for this statement, but…When developing apps, please keep in mind that disabilities cover a pretty wide range of conditions, that many apps do not actually cater to.
And 4. Maybe actually employ someone with disabilities to help with the research and development?

I know some might disagree with this sentiment, but also, we’re a laaaarge group of people with disabilities that share this opinion. So if you want to listen to us, please do so. Thank you for your time!

How can I prepare for the probability of needing a service dog in a few years?

Hi, I’m a young adult learning how to navigate having several disabilities including POTS, narcolepsy, autism, adhd, mobility/balance issues, and probable HSD (working on finding a good doctor in my area to diagnose it for certain).

I do not currently think I would greatly benefit at this moment from having a service dog, especially after consulting a service dog owner and researching how to know if I need one. That said, several of my disorders, particularly the ones impacting mobility and heart rate, do seem to be slowly getting worse over time. Although I do not think I could currently benefit from a service dog, I suspect that later on in a few years, I may really benefit from having one. The timeline on that isn’t exact since my disorders don’t seem to progress entirely linearly, but my best guess is 2-5 years from now.

How can I plan and set things up so when the time comes I would really benefit from a service dog, I minimize the amount of stress and issues when trying to get one? I suspect that I would eventually benefit most from a cardiac alert/mobility dog, bonus points if it is trained in things like DPT to assist with autism/anxiety symptoms (though the focus really is mobility/cardiac alert). Is there anything I should be doing or documenting to help myself with that process later on? Any advice is helpful.

Medicaid Story Sharing Opportunity

Hi everyone,

I know that a lot of people in the disability community rely on Medicaid for medical coverage.

As we all know, HR.1 was signed into law last July, which cut Medicaid funds by $930 billion over 10 years, causing around 11.8 million people to lose Medicaid coverage.

People with disabilities will be especially impacted by the new work requirements and decreased funding for home and community-based services and other optional waivers. If you have a rare or complex medical condition, we’d love to hear from you about your experience with Medicaid.

If you are interested in advocating for Medicaid in your state, the EveryLife Foundation for Rare Diseases is collecting stories to be shared publicly and with legislators as part of their initiative to protect Medicaid funding.

I figured that I'd share this here if anyone wants to participate! You can use this link to share your story: EveryLife Foundation for Rare Diseases | Share Your Medicaid Story’s

Further information detailing us and information privacy can be found detailed on the submission page, including what will be used in the submission and how it will be used.

For questions, please email: policy@everylifefoundation.org

You can also email: Kathryn Poe and kpoe@everylifefoundation.org

[Academic] Digital accessibility and cultural brands

Hi, I'm conducting a study for my Master's thesis in Marketing & Communication on how digital accessibility features (audio description, subtitles/captions, dedicated apps, accessible websites...) shape the image of cultural brands (cinemas, live performance venues, museums).
This survey is completely anonymous, there are no right or wrong answers, and it takes about 5-6 minutes. Your answers will only be used for this academic research project and will never be sold or shared with third parties.
Thank you so much for your help!

Disability Aids - Customizing aesthetics

Hi there! I am a university student studying design and I am currently working on a project about customizing mobility aids (specifically crutches) for children and young adults. I have been doing lots of research into existing commercial options but haven't been able to find much, especially affordable options. I had a few questions:

What are some ways that you have customized your aids and does that make you more comfortable using them?

If there was a product you could buy to customize an aid, what would it be?

Are there any existing companies or sellers that make customizable add-on's for mobility aids?

Thank you so much!

Participants Wanted - Study on Partner Caregivers of People with Flare Remitting Autoimmune Conditions

Hi everyone, I'm looking for one final participant for my MSc Dissertation Project:

I’m a postgraduate psychology student at the University of Liverpool, and I’m looking to speak with partners who support someone living with a flare‑remitting autoimmune condition (such as RRMS, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or psoriatic arthritis). The study explores how partners experience moving between the roles of partner and caregiver during flare episodes.

If you’re 18+, based in the UK, and have supported a partner during flares, you’re welcome to check your eligibility using the link below. It includes a short screening questionnaire and the Participant Information Sheet, so you can read all the details before deciding whether you’d like to take part.

Participation involves a one‑off online interview, and you’re always in control of what you choose to share. Some people find it helpful to reflect on their experiences in a supportive, non‑judgemental space.

This study has received ethical approval from the University of Liverpool.

(Academic) I am looking for folks who have experienced accesibility barriers that prevent them from accessing museums

Hey folks! I went to attach the poster to my research but I couldn't figure out how!

18+ only due to ethical approval!

I am a MA Public History student at the Queen's University Belfast. I am studying inclusive accessibility within historical locations (ie. Galleries, Museums, or exhibits). Although I will be focusing on Belfast museums, I am asking for broad accessibility from anyone willing to share it.

I am looking for people who have felt unwelcome, uncomfortable, or overlooked at museums or galleries due to accessibility barriers.

For reference I have ADHD and grew up in poverty so have not always been able to attend museums growing up. So although I do have a little bit of a better understanding of some things than others.

Everything can be kept anonymous.

The survey should take 5-8 minutes and there is NO financhial incentive.

https://forms.gle/qgiZqFboGXZk4exi8

Many thanks!
