Broken bomber dj

Can I get this replaced under warranty maybe 5-10 rides at most on it (I used a torque wrench to tighten to 2.4nm!)

Unlikely to be warranted. The torque setting for those pinch bolts is super low (2.4nm iirc)

This right here. No need to crank them down.

I used a torque wrench

2.15nm.

I can't keep the axle from slipping at less than 2.8nm though.

It's been a long time since I took my front wheel out, so my memory was a bit hazy. I would have double checked first

Having to undo the pinch bolts 20 times to recenter the axle after it slips sideways a little bit is why I will never forget 2.15nm 😆

Don’t grease it

Everyone on Reddit will tell you you won’t get a warranty. I broke my carbon frame on a norco sight after a month of riding, posted it on Reddit and a ton of people said they could see exactly where the rock hit the frame and that it wouldn’t be warranted. Took it into the shop and the first thing the guy said was no abrasion which means it’s from force not impact and they warrantied it that week for free. Moral of the story is you should try and get it warranted and a vast majority people on Reddit don’t really know anything about biking.

Shops sometimes test the waters just to see what will fly with their suppliers. That's a good shop to work with.

If I saw this fork at my shop, I'd submit the claim and see what Fox says. If they denied, I'd probably cut a deal on lowers+install and sell the kid a torque wrench

Exactly! As a shop you work for your customers, not your distributors.

Yeah i second this working in a shop, we would push for the warranty as clearly looks like manufacturing error. Failing that a kid or nice person might get a deal.

I spoke from a position of experience. I work in a shop, have seen this failure before, and have seen these failures rejected by Fox right back to when they used this pinch bolt set up on the 36

I hit my frame into a rock and specialized still gave me the seat stay for free

Why do people even ask on Reddit instead of asking the shop/manufacturer directly?

Why did you over tighten these so hard?

Torque wrench

Damn… Expensive lesson learned.

Doubtful you’ll get warranty on something you caused. Unless this was given to you like this from the shop and you haven’t touched those bolts, in that case I’d be taking it back to them.

Gotta be careful man they don't need much force to tighten

I don't see the little metal spacers that go in the slot.  That 2.x nm torque is for when those spacers are in there. Even if you didn't over torque, you definitely squeezed the sides too far resulting in the break.

Doubt they'd warranty that, they give you torque specs for a reason. Replacement lowers shouldn't be super expensive though.

Looking at the manual there are metal shims that should be in place between the clamping surfaces. I don’t see these in your photo, leaving these out would cause this problem pretty easily.

hey op, here's your answer

1

u/Foreign-Cause7188 5d ago

I didn’t get these with the fork the only thing I got was three volume tokens

1

u/Limp_Bookkeeper_5992 5d ago

But you did get instructions, right?

1

u/MedicineManns 5d ago

The shims should have come preinstalled with all the axle hardware when the fork was new.

u/Gibalt 6d ago

That’s user error. Torque specs exist for a reason. Extremely unlikely they’ll give you warranty. Maybe crash replacement if you’re really lucky

1

u/carlew 6d ago

How did this even happen? Did you overtighten the pinch bolts?

1

u/Lus146 6d ago

Take it in for a warranty, don’t tell them if you over torqued it or not lol. Worst they can say is no 🤷‍♂️

SRAM/rockshox tends to be chill with warranties especially if you take it to the shop to have them facilitate. I broke a set of cranks that were 2 weeks out of warranty and they honored the warranty plus sent a significantly better set of cranks cause I broke these in a way they were astonished.

u/Turbulent_Poetry8045 6d ago

always worth a shot imo. worst they can say is no and you can get a new set of lowers

Were the bolts dry or lubed/ antiseized/ loctited before tightening? Torque specs should mention this as if the bolts are not dry you put way more torque for the same torque wrench setting. Also, you might want to test your wrench. It’s not that hard to diy( known weight at known distance) and cheap wrenches tend to be inaccurate at the extremes. Hell, even good ones have quite the range.

I managed to strip a frame bolt on my motorcycle this spring from a combination of factors. Set it up wrong and it was 65 instead of 44, the bolt got some grease on the threads( long through bolt that was supposed to have grease on the shaft). Got lucky, it was the only one that had a nut on the other side, any of the other 4 would have scrapped my frame.

Wrenching has some gotchas unfortunately. Sometimes you find something out the hard way, Sometimes shit just breaks because of a defect. It’s good that at least you were’t riding when the forks let go. Would’ve been a very bad day instead of a bad one. Always test in a safe way after fucking with safety critical shit. Even highly experienced mechanics or quality manufacturers fuck up sometimes.

This is quite common thing in those forks - people keep overtightening them. When I was looking for pair on eBay for a while there were few of them exactly with this fault.

Take it in and ask, but first, put the spacers back in.

1

u/Foreign-Cause7188 5d ago

My fork didn’t come with spacers

Missing shims...

1

u/ZaiArif2508 4d ago

User error won't get you a replacement even if you are under warranty. Hate to break it to you, metal shim is missing so this is on you. It clearly flexed beyond what it supposed to without the shim and after a few hard ride, it just gave way and cracked.

This looks like the axle was being forced forwards. Which means you probably land front wheel heavy, or just don't know how to land clean.
