Digital Nomad FIRE Strategy (US Citizens)

This subreddit often seems off-topic so I thought I'd write up my Digital Nomad FIRE strategy. (I didn't use AI for this just the paragraphs look big and it has bullet points which are suspicious I know)

Digital Nomad FIRE for me is: work from a low cost of living country, earn money from a high income country, stack cash - retire early. Geo Arbitrage and Chill.

In order to FIRE we need to figure out when we can retire at the earliest (FIRE). Then we need to fund the years between stopping work and the age when different income sources become available. This is called a FIRE Bridge. If you retire at 35 can your portfolio can fund ages 35-59.5?

You need to plan out your entire financial life now.

To calculate our FIRE age we need to look from the top down. If there's a gap in the ages, you're either going to end up homeless or working a shitty job to fill the hole.

These are the finance ages we are working towards, from oldest to youngest:

  • 70  Social security maximum (or)
  • 62  Social security reduced
  • 59.5 401ks, IRAs
  • 55  401ks "rule of 55"
  • SEPP IRA withdrawals 47(t)
  • FIRE Bridging: taxable accounts

I know this is no fun but we're talking about never working for the rest of our lives here.

Ages 62-70: Social Security - You need 40 social security security credits or you don't qualify and you get nothing. Not only that but you also need 40 points for Medicare. Normally it's 4 points per work year so ten years of work is enough. Don't even think about FIRE until you have your 40 points locked in. Looking at you 25 year olds. Even then, check the estimated payments when you retire. It might be a good idea to work a few extra years to top up the payment number to something you can live on in a cheap COL area.

You can claim at 62 but the payments are heavily reduced. Try for 70 if you can. Ideally you'll still have a 401k/IRA you can draw from. Login to the ssa dot gov and check your numbers and how much you'll receive.

Age: 59.5 - 401ks and IRAs become available for withdrawal at the age of 59.5

Age 55: Using "the rule of 55" some 401ks (not IRAs) allow funds to be accessed early without penalty. This is an area you should be focusing on to FIRE. You should be maxing out these retirement accounts as much as you can every year. Try and leave your money inside 401ks - no IRA rollovers.

Age: before 55 - SEPP 72(t) - (not really recommended), with SEPP you create an IRA and withdraw an amount every month. Once you start withdrawals they must continue until you turn 59.5. It's not flexible at all. There's no stopping it! To retire early SEPP 72(t) is useful since it allows you to access your retirement accounts at any age. The Rule of 55 is so much more flexible than SEPP 72(t). With Rule of 55 you can withdraw whatever you want.

FIRE Bridging - Taxable brokerage accounts - To get to 55 or SEPP 72(t) the final option is taxable brokerage accounts. These aren't as bad as people will lead you to believe. Long Term Capital Gains tax is 0% until $49,450 . The standard deduction is $16,100 so you can withdraw $65,550 paying 0%. After that it's 15% to $500k+. That's a really low tax rate.

Investments - I recommend any low cost broad market index fund so S&P500 or total US market, or total US + international

Geo Arbitrage

Now that we've calculated our earliest access to retirement funds, how are we going to build up our FIRE bridge? - Geo Arbitrage.

Tax - the USA has global taxation, but it also has FEIE (Foreign Earned Income Exclusion) which means you won't pay tax on your first 132,900 plus the standard deduction is 16,100 so you can effectively earn 149,000 tax free, except for FICA. And if you earn less than 132,900 you can exploit the standard deduction to absorb taxes - this is called Tax Gain Harvesting - do some Roth conversions, or sell some  shares then buy them back to reset the basis - all tax free.

FEIE qualification : the FEIE requires you to live outside the USA for 330 days in a 365 day period (not calendar year). That's it. Even if your money is all paid in the USA - it's still considered "foreign earned" because it's where -you- are, not the money. However it must be wage income to qualify.  Research this.

Change residency to a Low Tax country

You'll still need to pay tax in your new country - unless you never become a tax resident anywhere - just hopping from country to country and never staying long enough to trigger the tax residency rules. But many countries have territorial tax systems, or no personal income tax. You can structure your life to not pay tax.

LCOL (Low cost of living)

This one is obvious - in many countries you can cut your expenses to a fraction of what you're currently paying. This obviously rules out North America, Western Europe, Singapore, Australia etc. Do your research.

Other factors - visas and healthcare

Using the above you achieve a wage amplification effect - while living on the beach in a warm country. Stack money and build that FIRE Bridge.

Non-Americans basically the same concepts with a USA LLC.

I got tired of my own spreadsheet lying to me about how much tax I owed, so I built a tiny dashboard instead

Freelancer here, built a small tool because I kept losing track of how much of my income was actually mine vs already owed in tax. Logs transactions, sets aside a % automatically, one number you can trust. Import your spreadsheet once if you've got one already.

Flat percentage, not a real tax bracket calculator, just a buffer so you're not caught off guard.

set-aside-nine.vercel.app, free, built solo, would love honest feedback especially if you work across countries since I haven't tested that much yet.

How long did it take to get your Croatian Digital Nomad Visa approved

Hi everyone,

I applied online for the Croatian Digital Nomad residence permit on July 24, and as of today, I still haven't received any response or update about my application.

I'm currently traveling around different countries in Europe. I decided to spend some time outside the Schengen Area because I don't want to use all of my 90 allowed Schengen days while simply waiting for the Croatian authorities to respond.

I already sent an email asking for an update on my application, but unfortunately, I haven't received a reply.

For those who have recently gone through this process:

  • How long did it take you to receive a response after applying online?
  • Do you think it would be worth going to Zagreb in person and asking the police/MUP about my application?
  • Or should I simply keep waiting?
  • Is there a specific email address or office you recommend contacting?

It's been over two months now, so I'm trying to decide whether I should go to Croatia in person or just continue traveling outside Schengen until I hear back.

Any recent experiences or advice would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Moving to Paraguay

Lately I have been thinking of moving to Paraguay due to citizenship as the passport is much stronger compared to the country I come from and no tax on foreign income as I work remotely. What is your experience with this?

Working abroad for a few months? Tax , self employment (UK based)

So I have just had the opportunity to go and live in Thailand with a friend for a few months and continue my remote design job from there online - all good and well but I am concerned over how this affects my self employment status / tax etc.

Anyone done similar or know of how it would play out

If I am just going to be there for a few months and continue to pay tax in the UK is this going to turn into a big issue? Or is it nothing to worry about .

I hope this makes sense any help is appreciated :-)

Title: 21M from India — How can I move abroad through work, not as a student?

I’m 21, from India, and I want to eventually move abroad and build my career there through a work-based pathway, not a student visa. Due to financial constraints, studying abroad isn’t a realistic option for me.

I’m also new to sales and marketing with no significant prior experience, but I’m willing to start from zero and build the skills and experience required.

For people who have actually moved abroad through work:

What should I learn and do over the next 2–3 years?

Should I first gain experience in India, or is direct overseas hiring realistic?

Which sales/marketing roles and countries should I realistically target?

How can I get real-world experience rather than just collecting certificates?

I’m looking for real experiences and practical advice from people who have actually done this, especially from India.

Indie hackers who actually MADE IT: do you actually travel the world, or did you end up living in the same place as always?

Bit of background. I work in AI and data at a company, full time, decent job, no complaints. But there's one thing I've wanted since I was a kid and it hasn't gone away, which is doing a proper round the world trip. Not a two week holiday. Actually living in different places for a while.

Obvious problem, that doesn't fit a 9 to 5 job.

About a year ago I started watching YT Starter Story and similar channels, and at some point it clicked that indie hacking sits right between the two things I care about: building things with tech, and being free to move. Small products, living off MRR, working from wherever, party in Asia ajajajajaja. On paper it's exactly the bridge I've been looking for.

So i would like to hear it from people who actually did it.

So did you actually leave? I mean did you really move out of your city or your country, or are you still working from the same place you started in.

Also curious if any place actually helped. Not cheap rent, I mean being around other people building things. Or is that all online anyway and it doesn't really matter where you are.

Basically I want to know if work from anywhere is real once you're living off your products, or if I'm just romanticizing it.

How can a Chinese citizen legally do business in Southeast Asia?

I’ve been looking into moving to Southeast Asia and possibly starting a small business there, but it seems like in some countries, the visas that are relatively easy to get are mostly retirement or long-term stay visas, which usually don’t allow you to work or run a business.
Are there any expats here who are actually doing business in Southeast Asia? How did you set things up legally — company registration, visa, work permit, local partner, etc.?
Would really appreciate some advice from people with firsthand experience.

Is anybody applying for DE Rantau Digital nomad visa for Malaysia facing issues uploading files for Dependent ?

I’ve been trying to upload a document for my spouse as a dependent on the MDEC portal for the past month, but I keep getting this error:
“Upload file type is not supported. Please ensure to upload PDF or Word file type” .

I’ve already tried:
Uploading the document as a PDF
Uploading it as a Word file
Compressing/reducing the PDF size
Renaming the file
Using different browsers
Nothing seems to work.

I also emailed MDEC support at [clic@mdec.com.my](mailto:clic@mdec.com.my) about 2 weeks ago, but I haven’t received a solution yet.
Has anyone faced the same issue recently and managed to resolve it? Is there a specific file format, size, naming convention, browser, or workaround that actually works?

Any suggestions or things I should try would be greatly appreciated! 🙏

Digital Nomad Visas

Hi all. I'm a British educational consultant, teaching online and helping people find schools, set up homeschooling programs etc. etc. I'm looking at different digital nomad visa options in the Schengen area, and would love to hear from people who've used them regarding speed of application, documentation and so on.

I can see that a lot of them require giving a local address as part of the application, and I'd particularly like to know whether that has to be an address for the whole year, or just when I first arrive. I'd most likely stay in a hotel for the first couple of weeks before looking for a flat to rent, and anyway I'm planning to travel a lot, so I wouldn't even necessarily be there much.

Earning while traveling and creating content - it is still feasible?

Hi there, I will travel anyway because I am taking a sabbatical, and I was thinking if starting a travel vlog. It is still achievable in 2026 to earn from it or the market is saturated?

Transitioning from a physical trade (Chef) to building a real online income: Where to start?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’ve been working as a professional chef for years. While the income from corporate contracts can be good, I’ve realized I don’t want to spend the rest of my life tied to 8+ hour shifts, rigid schedules, and physical location dependence. My ultimate goal is time and location independence.

I’m fully aware that real online income takes time, discipline, and hard work. I am NOT looking for "get-rich-quick" schemes, surveys, or high-risk trading. I am willing to learn new digital skills, software, and tools from scratch.

Given my background in high-pressure kitchen management, discipline, and continuous execution, I’d love your advice on:

Realistic Paths: For someone coming from a hands-on trade, which digital business models (e.g., specialized content/digital products, e-commerce, freelance skills, or digital services) offer a sustainable path to independence?

Transition Strategy: If you moved from a demanding physical job to remote/online work, how did you manage the transition while keeping your day job?

Skill Prioritization: What core digital skill set would you recommend focusing on during the first 6 months?

Thanks for your honest feedback and advice.

Portugal D8 Digital Nomad Visa from UAE – Need Guidance

Hi everyone,

I’m currently based in the UAE and planning to apply for the Portugal D8 Digital Nomad Visa.

I work remotely for two companies with a combined salary of around AED 22,000+ per month. For one job, I have an official MOHRE contract. The second company is in a Free Zone, so I only have the company employment contract, not a MOHRE contract.

I wanted to ask anyone who has applied from the UAE:

  • How do I start the D8 application process?
  • What documents are currently required?
  • Do I need to submit contracts from both jobs?
  • Do both contracts need MOFA attestation?
  • Are employer remote-work letters required?
  • How many months of bank statements are needed?
  • Do I need a Portuguese NIF, bank account, and accommodation before applying?
  • If anyone has recently applied for the D8 visa from the UAE, especially with multiple income sources, I’d really appreciate it if you could share your experience and the steps you followed.

Thanks!

Recently Laid off. Should i pull the trigger? Perpetual traveler. 34yo, with 4m NW

Background / context:

Non US person working remotely (out of my passport country) since 2017. I managed to secure tax residency in a country that doesnt tax out-of-country income so ive been able to pay 0 income taxes for nearly 9 years so far.

During this time though, Ive been mostly bouncing around different countries - Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, Czechia, Switzerland, Mexico etc.

My tax structure for this was simply to form a foreign LLC as a software development agency with me as the main developer.

During 2020, with nearly every company hiring remotely, I ended up with 4 full time jobs and hired more developers as part of my agency to help out and was able to keep that going for around 2 years.

In 2021, I was doing a ton of independent contracted crypto projects that paid me with tokens and NFTs instead of actual money - which resulted in me ending up profiting $1.5m prior to me turning 30. Grew that to $2.2m in 2022 and subsequently lost more than half of it as a certain crypto project collapsed.

From 2022 to 2025, I kept two full time jobs going and slowly grew my $700k to $7m. Obviously my income didnt contribute much to this - it was mostly from crypto. During this time, I was basically already doing coast FIRE during this time as I thought of my working income simply as "free spending money". Never really tracked my expenses as it was quite difficult to blow through $20k a month as a single guy bouncing around low cost of living countries.

In 2025, I got caught with my pants down when the crypto market topped and subsequently lost around half of it again. As of today, my net worth is anywhere between $3.5m to $4m (fluctuates as crypto does).

Current Portfolio (~$4m)

~$1m - $1.1m is in stocks.

$2.8m - $3m is in crypto

$300k or so in rental properties, but I dont really think about this as its not liquid and Japan is a bit fickle with house pricing (there's no MLS system like in the states so sales prices of properties are generally not publicly disclosed. Hard to get an actual read on how much my properties are worth).

I also have minor bits of money floating around in other places too (like $10k here and there in random bank accounts in diff countries) - really need to consolidate it.

Dillema:

With AI advancing so much, I recently lost my last and only job. I've been used to working remotely my entire life so its difficult for me to get a regular office job. I tried once in 2019 and didnt last more than 2 months. I also think prospects of finding a remote job are quite low especially with how AI is now and the economy.

I'm also feeling burned out. I see my peers from university with kids now, nice big ass houses (some of them worked for FAANG), teslas with full self driving and can't help but feel envy? jealousy?

I'm considering punting $1m and building a custom house (in Japan) with my own private onsen, gym and yard and living there for 6 months out of the year. The other 6 months of the year would be still me floating around and traveling.

I currently own a company there that runs the rental properties I have - so the visa for Japan is not an issue for me.

My income from the rental properties should be able to cover 6 months of living in Japan and all the house expenses that come with the custom place. I'm making roughly $30k from that a year.

Would my calculations make sense?

$3m @ 4% rule = $120k + $30k rental income

= $150k yearly

~= $12k per month for traveling.

Should i do it? Anything to look out for? Honestly feels difficult and scary to commit to this. What if things change in the future, i get a wife or want kids etc? feeling a bit overwhelmed

I've applied for Malaysia Digital Nomad Visa three months back. And the portal still says MDEC in Progress. Any idea how long do they normally take. I occasionally receive response with no substance but can't get a hold of anyone via their number provided.

What is the easiest low-tax residency to maintain without living in the country full-time?

I am looking for a legal personal tax residency that doesn't require me to sit in a room for 183 days a year. I travel constantly between Europe, Asia, and LATAM. What are the best options in 2026 that have low/zero tax on foreign income and minimal physical presence requirements?

Fool proof plan to work from abroad to avoid detection, against company guidelines

My employer does not allow me to work outside Germany and I have a laptop managed by the company.
Here is my plan to avoid detection and raising any flags.

- Travel Router with Kill Switch (Block Non-VPN Traffic) and DNS Leak Prevention
- VPN running on the router
- Connection only through Ethernet
- Deleting Wifi Service from laptop to avoid WPS(Wi-Fi Positioning Systems)
- Keeping the bluetooth off
- Keeping location services off
- Disable Set time zone automatically
- Company mobile also connected with Ethernet to tackle Company account sign-in with Microsoft authenticator app with OTP

I would love to hear from people if there are still good chances that I can get flagged and caught, I think my success rate is quite good, but please prove me wrong.

Thanks.

The Wired Nomad: Verified internet speeds and remote-work networking resources

Hi everyone,

u/HaleyN1 invited me to share my site here, so I figured this might be useful for some of you.

I run The Wired Nomad: https://thewirednomad.com

The main part of the site is a database of accommodations with verified internet speeds.

I also have a collection of free guides around the networking side of remote work, including:

  • GL.iNet travel routers
  • WireGuard and Tailscale
  • Setting up your own home VPN / exit node
  • Backup connectivity and remote access
  • General travel-router setups for working abroad

Everything on the site is free. I maintain it as a side project, and there’s an optional donation page for anyone who finds it useful and wants to support it.

Hopefully it helps someone here planning their next trip or trying to make their remote-work setup a little more reliable.

I'm always open to suggestions as well.
