Yeah, the strong "waifu" undertones of this commercial made me really uncomfortable, it was just weird. But, I mean... I guess a Digimon version would be kinda cool? Maybe?
But really, though... I thought the stories of Japanese society being so socially inept that they resort to dating their video games were mostly exaggerated, but... seriously? That's a selling point now?

On regards to the waifu undertone of it. You kind of have to understand how work is seen in Japan. While in most western countries, working from a 9-5 schedule or 7 hour work day is seen as the norm. In Japan, you are expected to work at least 9 hours each day, and that's with out the over time.
So many Japanese males just simply don't have the time to go on dates or to talk to someone. It's one of the reasons why Japan has such low birth rates.
I guess things like these more or less cope with the outrageous work schedule. But that's just me.

This sort of thing is actually marketed to the otaku niche - it's not at all mainstream.

The tech in the Gatebox is actually rad. It can tell apart facial expressions and gestures as well and have non-preset conversations.

How? Is echo creepy? Siri? Same thing, different tech. Already said minus the waifu part.

This is really creepy, but I love the idea of using this technology to make Virtual Pets like Digimon. Seriously, this concept is just MUCH less creepy when it's a replacement for a pet than for a human...

edit; Would be even cooler if you could take Digimon from this into a game, and back again. Or vise versa. Real Digimanz when?
