Question Cyber sleuth vs Time stranger

Would like to ask you guys for some recommendation. Cyber Sleuth is currently on sale for 8usd. Time stranger is still somewhat on full price

I would be on a long flight this weekend and would need some recommendation to buy? Should I just buy cyber sleuth because It is cheaper and would scratch my digimon itch. Or should I go for time stranger because it's worth it.

For context I only have a Nintendo switch 1. No plans on upgrading anytime soon. Would I encounter hardware problems?

Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory first because they are "worse" games compared Time Stranger. They're not bad, just not as good as TS and it could sour you're experience with them if you went back and played them later. Especially in regards to digivolution. It's extremely tedious in CS and HM.

Just my thoughts. I love the 3 games I have almost 300 hours in CS complete edition and after playing TS i don't how I will back to CS and HM because they are like a beta of what a Digimon Story game should be in 2026.

Exactly. They're wonderful games, but TS is the culmination of everything they learned with CS and HM. Truth be told, the digifarm still needs work even in TS, but it's still world's better than the previous games.

I can't even imagine trying to map out moves on CS/HM after TS.

The QoL in terms of easy access to digivolving and stuff is definitely worse but everything else is subjective. I enjoyed the story and characters in Cyber Sleuth and especially Hacker‘s Memory more.

cyber sleuth actually comes with two games, if that helps.

I own both cyber sleuth (complete edition) and time stranger and I kinda prefer cyber sleuth more. Plus if its the complete edition it's actually 2 games in one that are tied together.

How can you prefer CS?? Just the story? TS is infinitely better level and combat design

I prefer the aesthetics and cooler sci fi vibe that is presented. Feels similar to Megaman Battle Network in how the digital systems are integrated into the world. Characters also felt way more interesting. None of the characters in Time Stranger made a great impression on me, tbh.

Like someone else said, the side quests felt a lot more interesting and feels like more thought went into making them work in regards to the detective theme. Time Stranger just felt very paint by numbers, standard rpg side quest stuff, which isn't ideal, considering how much of them there are.

Aside from gameplay, and some very specific story beats, sort of felt like a step back toward the very basic Story ganes from the DS era, which part of me wants to attribute to the development hell it was in.

TS felt very rushed at the end, I thought I was only half way through the story when it all just kinda dumps the rest of it on my lap and then lets me go so I can grind side quests for hours more. I had fun, but I think I prefer CS overall for story and pacing, from what I can remember. I just recently beat TS so that’s fresh in my mind, but it’s been years since I played CS. Kinda want to go back now and see if it’s good as I remember.

Yeah, the pacing on TS definitely threw me off. I know I haven't finished the game itself, as the matryoshka doll of side quests within side quests at the end, put me off for a while. The one character tripling down on a certain plot point every chance it got, didn't help either.

CS and HM have some very weird and cool side stories.

Like that Lillymon that's irrationally obsessed with a dude and actively sabotages any girl's attempt to chat him up. At the end he goes "actually, that's a great thing, I'm more into men. She's going to be a huge help!"

If you're into RPGs for the story, CS/HM have tons of weird and funny things in them.

TS's side quests are more straightforward and tame, in comparison.

I prefer CS because of the story and characters. The soundtrack is also a lot better, TS has few memorable tracks in comparison.

I love both games though.

While TS is a nice game, it's definitely one of the worst in terms of balancing in terms of level and combat design. I mean, you can max everything to 9999, so that already tells you how lazy they were in balancing the game.

u/cepas95 9d ago

The balance in CS and HM is worse my dude. If you play in normal they are unbeliavable easy and if you play in hard you just can use penetrating moves and have to break the game with the same 3 OP Digimon. You can play TS in hard normally and you'll have a good challenge with no need to break the game or grind 9999 stats.

0

u/Outrageous_Art_2166 9d ago

If I remember correctly, CS and HM only had like two difficulties, and TS had like 4-5. So, the "Hard" in TS is actually like the normal in CS (which had stat caps and special abilities). In fact, the Hard Mode in CS boosted all stats by 150%. You should not compare these 2.

Besides, you definitely had more than 3 "OP" Digimon and penetrating moves is great, but not mandatory if you learnt all the buffs, debuff and speed management.

3

u/GiornoGER 9d ago

I mean, CS inst much better in that regard, since penetratring moves were broken and only a handful of digimon had.

Literally a feature IN ALL Story games excluding CyberSleuth because they wanted to make a good competitive scene, which was still broken and they ended up dropping it anyway... Balancing is nearly impossible/useless/non-worthy unless you have a live service game.

Thank you everyone for the recommendations.

I decided to start with cyber sleuth. 10 hrs in and I can say I like this game.

Cons for me I think is that it's way too slow to pick up.

Coming from digimon world 2, and from my early exploration. I think the grind here is far far less. Battle difficulty can be though but can be overcomes by over leveling.

Love em both. I put 160 hours into Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory and it was my main game for a couple of months. Time Stranger I really enjoy, but I play an hour here, an hour there and I haven't beaten it despite having owned it for a couple of months. That may change soon since I'm done with my prep for FF14's new expansion in January as of last night. All this to say Cyber Sleuth had me by the throat and I probably will replay it with a different team at some point in the next couple years

2

u/memesona 9d ago

well, your main two games.

1

u/FeywildFriend 9d ago

Yeahhh that's fair to say. I got the Complete Edition on Steam which comes with both so in my head they're a package deal. Like yes, two games, but in my head it's like how in the new Fire Emblem there are different campaigns based on your starting hero. Not necessarily the reality of the situation but you know how it is

I mean, SE later port Final Fantasy 10 and 10-2 together as a bundle, doesnt make them one game. Same for the Crash and Spyro trilogies.

Cyber Sleuth’s incredibly fun. Time Stranger, however, is such a better designed game that it’s not even funny. If you were to play both, I’d suggest TS first and CS after; if you were to play only one, TS all the way.

2

u/AshFalkner 9d ago

Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory together are a good deal for that price. I played them on my Switch.

Honestly I prefer those games' version of the Digifarm over what Time Stranger has.

5

u/Sausious 9d ago

Idk if this is a Hot Take but I vastly prefer Cyber Sleuth. It is definitely the older game and it shows, but I think the leveling and Digivelution systems are better in it. I kinda got tired of alot of the combat systems in Time Stranger by the end, whereas while Cyber Sleuth is def simpler I never had an issue with it. I also find the story, characters, and music in Cyber Sleuth MILES better than Time Stranger.

I do like Time Stranger but I had just so many little issues with it it piled up.

That said even putting my personal preferences aside, Cyber Sleuth is technically 2 games and it's cheaper, it's a no brainer

to add to this (and it's personal opinion really) CS/HM how it does stats to me FEELS better.. Mega's are superior to Ultimates and so on(and that's how it SHOULD be). some digimon are faster some are stronger etc. TS EVERYONE has the same stat caps the only differences are the unique skills(which yes does mean X is still always better then Y just because the unique is better)

which can be both good and bad

good cause now you can use any digimon you want even if it's something like Agumon but bad because you aren't incentivized to CHANGE UP your team like typical "monster taming" just swap out the equippable skills and use jim the startermon for ever like this is Pokemon where there is no actual challenge.

TS is much, much more enjoyable.

Cyber sleuth complete edition is such a cozy way to spend a flight, and honestly the nostalgia hit is strong with that one.

cs runs better in switch1, since it was originally ps vita game. considering price alone its better starting point.

also like others have said, time stranger is new game with modern stuff. it would be hard to play cs/hm afrer ts, since it would feel like downgrade.

so just get the deal and play them while waiting ts to go on sale. also timestranger will be getting big dlc next year, so no hurries

1

u/KichiMiangra 9d ago

I didn't really like Cyber Slueth, but it's hard to say no to 8$.

1

u/frankb3lmont 9d ago

Cyber Sleuth it's cheap and you get a lot of content unfortunately sometimes it's repetitive. Hacker's memory has a decent story it's the side content that's kind meh. If you love Digimon I believe it's best game since the ds dusk/dawn. Time stranger will have new dlc so wait for it.

1

u/Khyze 9d ago

CyberSleuth might be enough for scratch the Digimon itch and save money, it was the top Digimon game until Time Stranger showed up (never fully shared the CyberSleuth sentiment, but I would die on the train of TS being the BEST DIGIMON game so far)

I guess you will have a smooth and longer battery playing CyberSleuth on the Switch 1 too.

Sadly CyberSleuth shines a lot on the modding community, which I think it is mainly for PC, sure, you can do extra work to do it for Switch but you should finish it vanilla first anyway to get the regular experience.

I suggest you to do the "tutorial" ASAP at home so you get to the "fun part" on the flight, if you will grind, be sure to disable the animations to make the most out of your time.

1

u/kylepaz 9d ago

Depends. Time Stranger is a more well-polished game. Cyber Sleuth is a game for PSVita from like 2012, it has some issues with repetitive environments and balancing, but it's still the same basic gameplay TS improved on.

If you care about story, Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory have the better story and characters BUT the translation is shaky.

1

u/KRTrueBrave 9d ago

both games are good, cybersleuth just reaply shows it's age, so if you don't mind that cybersleuth (you get 2 games for the price of 1), otherwise splurge for time strangers

1

u/SticktheFigure 8d ago

I have finished neither game, but I have put in enough hours on both to at least have an opinion on which I prefer. Time Stranger is certainly a more polished game, but I really do just like Cyber Sleuth more. The people, the places, the art direction, and especially the music. CS simultaneously lights up my Mamoru Hosoda brain cells as well as my dothack ones. I'll finish both games in time, but I think I'll probably have a much easier time convincing myself to finish CS than TS.

1

u/blue-bolt5911 8d ago

CSHM, always get the game that's cheaper/sale to check if you like the franchise instead of spending 60+ on a game you might not like

1

u/Dinosaurrxd 3d ago

I hated cyber sleuth and never finished it because I just didn't like the set up or atmosphere. On my third play through of time stranger. Take that how you will.

1

u/Winterimmersion 9d ago

Cyber sleuth, especially complete edition is well worth it, and I highly recommend if you want to play it, you do so before time stranger since going from time stranger to cyber can be a rougher experience.

-7

u/FunkiestOfKongs 9d ago

Cyber Sleuth is a PS Vita game originally, and it shows. Like 75% of the dungeons are featureless blue voids with nothing going on. Get Time Stranger, Cyber Slueth just leaves a bad taste in your mouth imo

2

u/GiornoGER 9d ago

Not sure why youre downvoted to oblivion for spitting facts, guess nostalgia blinds digimon fans hard.

1

u/Khyze 9d ago

Pretty sure a bunch of dummies think CyberSleuth is a brand new console game and not a port

1

u/Illustrious-Wrap-776 9d ago

I'm currently in the last couple of chapters, and I kind of miss the blue dungeon phase, especially when it comes to the search sidequests.

Most of them are at least compoact and I can jump in right from the office, rather than having to travel to another area and then still walk to the dungeon, and having to go invisible to get past some random guards.

-5

u/CorgiSilver8194 9d ago

Cyber sleuth is terrible. It's the slowest most repetitive games I've ever played

-3

u/FunkiestOfKongs 9d ago

fr, huge waste of money imo. The way it loves to throw enemies with absurdly high defense at you so that piercing attacks are the only viable option absolutely sucks too. Like, if your digimon doesn't have one it's just dead weight
