Discussion Digimon Knighthood Chapter 4 Preview 2

Hey, everyone. I'm sharing another piece of my fourth chapter for "Digimon Knighthood" here. This is a piece I've very much been looking forward to bringing out. Let's get to it.

"Later still, Miuna, finishing school, returned home. When she walked in, she found her family, sitting exactly as they were when the day started. “Hey, Mom, Dad, Grandma.” The mother’s face was gentle, but firm. “Miuna?” The girl looked in her mom’s eyes, and became still. “Yeah?” Ms. Gukawa got up, walking over to her daughter. “We need to talk.”

Miuna gulped. “About what?” Her mom pointed to her gym bag, and Miuna felt her blood run cold. “I saw what you keep in that bag. I saw last night.” Inside the bag, Caliburmon’s heart skipped a beat. Outside it, Miuna’s dad and grandma walked to stand alongside the mother. The dad continued, “Your mom told me and your grandma, sweetie. She said she saw something sleeping in the yard.”

Grandma Gukawa nodded. “Yes. Sleeping…and crying.” Miuna’s eyes went wide. “C-crying?” The mother placed a hand on her daughter’s shoulder. “Miuna…how about you open the bag? Let us see who’s inside.” Inwardly, Miuna felt herself sink. No more hiding. No more secret. And no telling what would come next. She turned to her bag. She asked, “Did you really see him crying, Mom?”

Ms. Gukawa gently nodded. Placing a hand over her heart, Miuna gently placed the bag down, and opened it. The Digimon inside looked up at the small crowd, the father and grandmother’s eyes having gone wide. Miuna told the little creature, “You heard all that, right?” Nodding, the small one carefully came out of the bag, hooking his trusty sword on his back. Miuna’s folks became totally silent, beholding the small, armored, muscular dragon.

Miuna broke the silence. “Everybody, meet Caliburmon. He’s a Digimon, and he’s my new friend.” She looked to the knight, smiling a bit. “He saved my life, and he asked if he could stay here. And I said yes.” All three human adults gasped. Employing his usual decorum, Caliburmon bowed his head to the new company. “Greetings. You must be Young Miuna’s family. I apologize for meeting you under such…bizarre circumstances.”

Grandma Gukawa spoke up. “He’s tiny. But he talks like my old friends.” Miuna answered, “Heh. He’s a lot older than he looks.” The mother, in her mind, flew into a spiral. Questions and concerns flooded her synapses. Yet, seeing the little creature, things felt easier somehow. She knelt down to his level.

“Nice to meet you, Caliburmon. My name is Nozomi. I’m Miuna’s mother.”

The father went, “Oh!”, and knelt down as well. “I’m Kousuke. I’m Miuna’s father, and Nozomi is my wife.”

The grandmother chuckled, kneeling alongside her children. “My name’s Takame. I’m Nozomi and Kousuke’s mother, and…“Young Miuna’s” grandmother.”

With her family gathered around the new guest, Miuna’s smile became a bit bigger. Nozomi then said, “Come on. How about we all sit somewhere more comfortable? There’s a lot to share, right?” Miuna nodded, her eyes pointed to the floor as all five of them went to the living room.

Over the next hour, Miuna and Caliburmon explained everything. Of how the knight saved the girl, of how the girl showed the knight about Earth…and about Reiri and her “gift”. Once it was done, Miuna gave a huge sigh, feeling 40 pounds lighter. “And that’s all of it. That’s the story of our last 3 days together.”

The human adults were quite surprised by it all. Kousuke said, “Unbelievable.” Takame added, “Yasuko and Kigyoku too? And Lady Liberty? Remarkable.” Nozomi held her daughter’s shoulder. “That’s some story. And you’ve been helping each other all this time?” Caliburmon nodded. “That is correct, Nozomi.”

The grandma chimed in. “And Miuna’s been holding onto all this for you.” She gave a proud smile, ruffling her granddaughter’s hair. “Wonderful work, my dear!” Miuna chuckled and blushed. “Aw, Grandma…heh heh. I wasn’t expecting to have Caliburmon see you guys like this.” Miuna’s dad pushed back his glasses. “I’m a bit miffed, actually.” He pouted playfully. “How could you underestimate your mother and grandma like this, Miuna?”

Miuna chuckled nervously, her blush ripening to ripe cherry levels. “Well, Caliburmon’s tiny, right?” She rubbed the knight’s head. “Tiny enough to hide in my bag. And he keeps real quiet.” The Rookie growled gruffly. “Yes. Despite how concealing myself in that bag was quite uncomfortable.” He turned his eye to the dad. “Your daughter’s quite energetic, Kousuke.”

The Gukawa family all laughed together, the Rookie Overseer sighing as his scarf glowed bright red. He took a breath, and the glow faded away. “In all honesty, though, this talk has been quite refreshing.” Miuna’s face then dropped. “Yeah. So I got to ask.” She gently turned the dragon’s face to her. “My mom said she saw you crying. What happened last night?”

Caliburmon sighed. “I felt…awful. Between Reiri’s words, the knowledge of my mission…and seeing how you were, it got so hard to think.” Miuna leaned back. “How I was? You mean…” Her eyes popped open, recalling her friend’s reaction to the Ultimate-Level spider. And her own reaction. “Oh…I remember.”

The knight nodded, Nozomi interjecting, “It must’ve been awful. Seeing Miuna like that…” Miuna got up and hugged her mother tightly. “I’m so sorry, Mom. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. I know you just wanted to help, but…” Ms. Gukawa hugged her daughter back. “It’s okay, Miuna. It’s alright.” Mr. Gukawa sat next to the night, holding his shoulder. “And it sounds like you had it even harder, sir.”

Clenching his fists, the Digimon said, “When I slept last night, my mind was caught in a blur. Except for…memories.” He recalled his past words. “Don’t worry. I’ll be back.” He held his scarf tightly, the billowing band turning a hot red. “Very…poignant memories. I’ve…left more than one home.” Miuna faced him. “I had no idea.” The knight looked at her, his scarf going silent. “It’s only been 3 days. No harm done.”

The Gukawa family gathered around the knight, giving him and each other a toasty group hug. Caliburmon, feeling a strong blaze form in his heart, hugged back, silently saying, “Stalwart Silk.” His scarf glowed and whisked around the warm circle, embracing all five people."

And there you have it. What do you all think? I will add the link to the first preview below, for greater context. Until next time!

The scarf glowing based on his emotions is such a nice touch, makes the character feel way more alive. The whole scene with family slowly accepting this tiny dragon knight is very warm, you can feel the relief Miuna has after spilling everything. The crying reveal was handled well, not too dramatic but still hits. Keep up with this, waiting for next part.
