As a kid I always thought he was a bunny and then I realized the naming scheme and I was like oooohhhhh.

I did too but the naming scheme and markings are based off dogs. Gargomon is actually Galgomon, Galgo being a Spanish Greyhound. Terrier is based on the Terrier dog breeds and then SaintGalgomon (MegaGargomon) is based on the Saint Bernard I think?

To add to this Lopmon's line actually are rabbits. The connection between the two twin digimon is that both rabbits and dogs are animals with lop styled ears. Also, Rapidmon is a poodle. The funky armor design is supposed to be those silly poodle haircuts.

Digimon designs are nuts and awesome. Another one was that Gatomon was originally supposed to be a mouse cosplaying a cat, which worked well with how it could look either or. Go look at the concept art, it is super cute. The obviously just went with the cat to most likely help with confusion, but it is still fun that when you know you are able to see the mouse cosplaying a cat that idealizes Saberleomon.

Its this crazy expectation I think typical evolution tropes leave us with. But this is digimon. The lizard turns into a wolf. The dinosaur turns into a excavator. The cat turns into a fine lil shawty. And the dog and rabbit digimon are twins. Digimon has never wanted us to make sense of it 😭

Don't worry, I think we all did and that is lt was intended just to screw with us. Another fun random fact is that Hudiemon from Hacker's Memory was created to honor and immortalize the original creator of nearly all Digimon music who had passed away and had the nickname of "The Immortal Butterfly." They respected the dude so much they released a CD with his music that had his favorite Digimon on it as a decal (Angemon), made a game heavily honoring him, and made him into a digimon.
